Subject: IMAP daemon supports mail notification ?
Date: 8 Aug 1999 21:30:18 +0800
I've noticed that as part of the IMAP specification,
it allows a client which is connected to it to receive
notification of new mails as soon as they arrive.
I have tried this with the default Redhat5.2 IMAP
server, using outlook express, and pegasus mail as
the clients. To receive new mail, I have to
interactively check.
How do I get the server to send new mail notifications ?
Is it a setting on the server, a setting on the client,
or do I need a new server ?
Thanks.

Date: Mon, 09 Aug 1999 08:03:54 GMT
Hi !
I am currently specifying a system where there is a need for TDM
multiplexer that interfaces into 2 Mbps, E1, G.704 exchange. The data
interfaces for mux are 64 kbps, X.21. The maximum number of data
interfaces is 20.
I would like to know if Linux -based computer can be used for this
purpose or do I have to use a TDM multiplexer provided by telecom
companies (Ericsson, Nokia, etc ...).
Thanks In Advance,
Markku

Does anyone have any tips on improving vbox' sound quality?
I use vbox 2.0b5 on a SuSE6.0 system. I currently record messages using
an audio tool on Win98. I can save recordings as either .wav or .au
files containing 8KHz, 8-bit u-Law encoding. Any other encoding runs
into a brick wall as far as Linux tools are concerned. I then use a
conbination of wavtopvf, pvfamp, uatopvf, pvftoau, and autovbox to
create vbox messages. But each time the result is greatly distorted. Is
this simply a matter of improving my recording level, or are the
conversion tools killing the qualilty?

Look into the connector with the latch tab down.
Pin 1 is on the right.
In a crossover cable, pin 1 goes to pin 3 on the other end.
In a straight through cable, it's pin 1 on both ends.

Why do you need/want 2 NICs when you are connecting to the inet with a modem? If
its to isolate two nets for security reasons, then they should (usually) be in
different networks such as 192.168.1.0 and 192.168.2.0. The above table suggests
you're doing this but your original post says you've put interfaces for both
NICs in the same net (192.168.1.0).
Regarding the hostnames, you should use some naming scheme to your liking - such
as Ernie & Bert (no caps necessary) in your case.
Can't comment on the Dial-On-Demand side of things.
Stu.

1. To access character based linux konsole from windows, there are
telnet based programs. I like SimpTerm. Don't know where to get it. I
got mine from a friend. I can mail it if you ask for it.
2. To access linux X-Windows in grphical mode from windows, there are
X-server (x-terminal) programs. In X, X-server is the terminal, X-client
is the program running in application server. There is XWin32 (
http://www.starnet.com/ ), and TNT-Lite (I guess) as shareware.
3. To access windows screen/mouse/keyboard from linux, there is VNC (
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ ). It is a proprietary product with
a proprietary protocol. So you will need to install its client and
server components on respective boxes.
4. To administer linux via a browser, there are linuxconf and webmin.

I would suggest LDP (Linux Documentation Project) books. They are
included in any distro, I guess.
Some LDP books:
NAG (Net.Admin.Guide)
SAG (Sys.Admin.Guide)
Installation Guide
Also Howto's and Linux Faq are good starting points. Some very few
HowTo's are rather crappy but others are good, and some few are
excellent "must-read"s (like Net-3-Howto).
Usually more precise documentation on packages like Squid etc. come with
the package itself.

Hello!
I own a pc with Linux and an older one under W95 that has a parallel port
scanner not supported by Linux.
My idea was to open via "vnc" (www.uk.research.att/vnc) a W95 display on
my Linux machine to control the scanner. Unfortunately "vnc" needs a
TCP/IP connection between client and host. As I do not want to buy two
network cards I would like to establish a TCP/IP connection between the
two computers via a parallel (or serial) cable link.
This is of course no problem under Linux but please tell me:
How can I setup a TCP/IP connection from a W95 client via the parallel (or
serial) port?
Can I setup a TCP/IP modem connection under W95 by actualy using a null
modem cable and not a "real" modem?
Cheers
Oliver

I have a small problem and I don't see the solution, maybe you do.
I run a server (P2-300, Mandrake Linux with kernel 2.3.12) with Samba
2.0.5a on it. When I connect a WinNT4 workstation to the domain (to
which the Samba machine is PDC) then read performance is good but write
performance sucks, I get timeouts etc. When I connect a Win2k
workstation to it the performance is very good both read and write.
The networktype is 16Mbit tokenring, on IP level everything is great.
the user authentification at logontime also works great.
Any idea what's wrong here?

Looks like this applies to sshd 2.x, and I'm trying to get sshd 1.2.27
to work, to support some old clients (fallback from v2). I am running
sshd as root (even tried chmod 777 /etc/{passwd,shadow}), so I'm pretty
sure the daemon can read the password file.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Personally, I had tremendous problems with pump. Pump is supposed to
replace dhcpd as a part of the standard Red Hat Linux 6 install, but I had
nothing but problems with it.
It failed to properly retrieve the desired dpcp info and took a fancy to
CPU cycles (on the order of 95% utilization!!!)
I nuked it and replaced it with a recent version of dhcpd and everythings
been working wonderfully for me since.
If pump works for you, count yourself fortunate. I know a lot of others
have struggled with it, too.

Well, if you bought the cable and the entity that sold it to you said it
was a cross-over cable, then accept that as the truth. They're not hard to
make.
You're right -- they look like regular cables, so if it's not labeled then
do yourself a favor and tag that cable.
You might be able to observe a difference is the internal wire sequencing
if you hold both RJ45 connect side by side and compare them! All of the
RJ45 connectors I've seen are transparent, probably for just such
occassions.
I'm pretty sure your problem is with your networking setup.

Is the dynamic-IP patch enabled? if you type:
echo /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr
at the command line, this should return "1". If the returned value isn't 1,
then put 1 into it:
echo "1" > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr
