I have heard that it is possible to use two modems with Linux and have
one tied to inbound IP and one bound to outbound IP. Is there any
documentation on how to set this up?
Also is this possible with ISDN? Use on B channel for Inbound and one
for Outbound.
If there are any pointers to how to set this up I would be very
appreciative.
Thanks,
Tony

Is there any fourth field in /etc/pap/secrets ? If so, then remove it.
"man pppd" for more about this.

I will answer these questions out of order.
1. Use the 386 - check http://www.linuxrouter.org/
2. I prefer Masqerade - proxies are a little overkill for security, I think.
3. Mail will require another box if you use lrp on a 386...let them get it
directly. :)
4. Samba is good.. Supposedly makes your linux FS appear as a windows box's hard
drive, on the other windows boxen.
5. Realaudio has no problem with IP Masq if you load the module (I think it's a
module) for it. Do your users listen to streaming MP3 stations? They can
download MP3s like any other download. Streaming mp3 ought to work anyway, I'm
pretty sure it uses http. Icq will work, but I see a lot of posts with
difficulty.

What you want is called "Samba". It allows you to share both
filesystems and printers. As for how it works...
I'm still stuck myself. :-)

Does anyone have any statistics concerning NFS writes/read to Dec
Alpha?
The reason for this is that we are getting atrocious performance(
modem speeds) with writes to Dec Alpha while reads are excellent.
We have 70 linux boxes that need to mount from the Dec Alpha
essentially acting as a file server.
We've tried changing the following options:
asynch, rsize,wsize in the fstab.
NFS from Alpha to Alpha is performing really good as ever; NFS from
Linux to Linux is also great.
We have a giga-bit Ethernet card on the Alpha; 100Mb on the Linux
clients and all connecting through 100Mb Switch.
A performance reference and configurations would be most helpful.
TIA

Well, okay, what are you doing now? You have a CompuServe account, right?
Check in their user help forums for information on how to connect using
PPP. There should be information there on what CompuServe is expecting, and
you should be able to use that to write a chat script used when you dial
in. Read the HOWTOs related to connecting to the Internet via PPP and you
should be able to put them together and get connected.
If you already have connectivity and want to read your mail and access
other members-only content, then there is a RPA proxy in the Unix forum
file area. If you search for RPA you should be able to find it, or I could
send you a copy.

Samba is not so huge that you need a bigger hard drive. I have it running in
a production environment on a 540mb hd along with apache web server. I don't
think 1 gb is too small for a server; it just depends on what you want to
put on it.

Date: Fri, 12 Feb 1999 00:40:55 -0330
Hello,
I have two Linux computers with hostnames x and y and I can
network them with ethernet (both have ethernet cards)
and with PLIP (of course, both have parallel ports and
I managed to get the right cable for it a long time ago).
I want to know whether I can use the ethernet and plip
connections at the same time. According to the IP protocol
every interface must have a unique IP address, so I end
up with two hostnames, with 2 IPs each. Is this legal?
Can each PC have a second hostname? After all, I suspect,
hostnames must be unique to the interface just like IP numbers(?)
Please help, I am not that familiar with this stuff,
Thanks a lot.

Subject: rlogin problem - please help
Date: 11 Feb 1999 19:41:59 GMT
Good morning!
I have two Linux boxes in my LAN. They both use Red Hat 5.1/kernel 2.0.35.
Until yesterday, I could log on from Windows 98 or rlogin without problems.
For some reason, I haven't been able to log on to either one since yesterday.
>From telnet, all I get is the "Red Hat Linux release 5.1 (Manhattan) Kernel
2.0.35 on an i586" greeting but no UID prompt. rlogin from Linux1 to Linux2
doesn't work going in either direction. Both machines stopped working at the
same time.
Connectivity: OK. I can see the hub and all LEDs are on; I've been doing FTP
and HTTP to both boxes, and one of them is my shared drive for SAMBA and
everything works fine. People from literally all over the world have
downloaded files (web pages, FTP) so I know the machine(s) are visible outside
of my local net.
What could be wrong?
Thanks in advance!

Hello,
I'm now running kernel 2.2.1, and although pppd 2.3.3 seems to work
with this version, it did not with the 2.1.x series, and I understand
that 2.3.5 is the preferred version of pppd.
When I try to compile pppd 2.3.5, it doesn't copy its own headers into
the kernel tree, saying the kernel files are newer. Nonetheless, the
compile fails with obvious ppp structure discrepancies. Is this a
known problem? What is the appropriate way to compile the latest
pppd?
Thanks,
David.

I had the same problem!! I was able to edit the /etc/rc.d/rc.modules and
add the following line under the ethernet support section:
/sbin/modprobe /lib/modules/2.0.34/net/tlan.o
After a reboot the nic was detected!! Now my problem is that I can only
ping myself, oh well first things first. BTW, I think the 2.0.34 dir is
based on the version of the kernal you're using I am a total newbie to
Linux so I could be wrong :) Good Luck.

Subject: Network Question
Date: Thu, 11 Feb 1999 14:10:39 -0600
I would like any assistance on the following situation:
PII running LINUX 5.2, 32mgs RAM, and a 3c905 ethernet card. After
installation and network configuration, I was able to ping my self (and
obviously the loopback), but no one else on the network.
The 'ifconfig -a' results in
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:60:97:6A:75:9C
inet addr:192.168.1.33 Bcast:192.168.1.255
Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
TX packets:5478 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
Interrupt:9 Base address:0xff00
The network is comprised of NT4.0 workstations. I do know that eventually I
will need to use SAMBA to share files with the NT boxes, but right now I
should atleast be able to ping the boxes on the network - right?\
Thanks for the help.
Scott
