How do I set up RedHat 6.0 routing. I find the Linuxconf setup totally
confusing. Also, does anyone know where I can get a 56k or ISDN modem
for really cheap?

I have Caldera OpenLinux 1.3 installed and running. I can telnet to the
Linux box from my Win98 machine and I can see the Linux box and the two
directories \homes and \public. But if I click on either directory I am
asked for a password. I have tried all the passwords I can think of and none
works. I have Samba running and security set to share. I have tried various
settings in Samba but none help. I can also see our Intranet web server
using Netscape Communicator on the Linux box. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

What do you need the default route for after finishing with Internet?
If you have a couple of local networks to connect to, just set up a
static route for each one, even if they go to the same router.
pppd sets the default route to the PPP host, so you can go anywhere on
the Internet. After it stops, it removes the default route. If you
absolutely need, there's an option in options file that permits you to
execute a command at ppp exit. You can set up your own default at that
point.

It's said that the new pppd supports dial on demand. Never get it to
work, though.

Is anyone working on supporting the homefree under linux (the ISA card

Are there similar _new and supported_ solutions to the Homefree that
are supported? I'd really like to avoid shelling out the bucks for

Subject: Please HELP: 3c905b-tx NIC does only transfer about 2,5MByte/s
Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 00:40:57 GMT
Hello!
I were very glad about, if you could help me. I'm not very familier
in linux.
I have bought 2 3c905b NIC's. One of them I installed on my NT4-Server
and the other I installed on my linux-box.
Linux-Box:
2xP166
Tyan Tomcat III MPS
Maxtor IDE Drive (UDMA2).
Redhat 5.2
Kernel 2.2.1
Date of file 3c59x.c 7/5/1999
I set both cards to Full-Duplex 100MBps. Then I compiled the kernel
and modules with the option 'CPU is to slow to handle full bandwith'
to get the maximum network performance.
Well, I thought this is all and expected a tranfer rate about 7-8
MByte/s.
But instead of I only get about 2570 kBytes/s. This realy sucks! Then
I changed the network cable with no results.
I transfered a 470MByte-file and then I checked with 'ifconfig' my
eth1: Only few (about 50 from maybe about 80000) Rx-errors.
Ping stats (all values are ca.):
to eth0 (3com 3c900, gateway, 10MBits/s, 10BaseT, IRQ12): 0,3ms
to eth1 (3com 3c905b, local, 100BaseT, IRQ10, PROBLEMCARD): 6,2ms !!!
to eth2 (Realtec 8029, local, 10Base2, IRQ11): 0,6ms
What I tried until now:
-changed BIOS for 'No pnp' -> nothing happened
-changed Cable to a shorter one -> only about 5kBytes/s difference
-changed Adapter SLOT (though I know that all PCI-slots are BUSMASTER)
-used another 100MBit-NIC on my NT4-box -> no changes
-read NET3-HOWTO/Hardware-HOWTO/Modules-HOWTO
-checked Donald Beckers page for support (hmmm...)
-read mailing lists -> but not understood all (especially, those
depends on my problem :(
If you need *any* information additionally, then let me know!
I realy don't know what to do now. Again: Please help me!!!!!!!!!!
I'm interested in EVERY opinion/suggestion.
Thanx in advance!
Yours sincerely
Erkan

I wonder if the original poster did this: export /mydirectory,
then try to mount host:/ expecting to see /mydirectory there.
This would give the "not authorized" error, I think.

Date: 18 May 1999 01:45:37 GMT
I understand once HylaFax is installed - you can use it to
FAX by sending email (www.tpc.int) - yes, OK, I understand.
I downloaded it - it _appeared_ to install OK (i.e. no serious
errors - sorry do not have the non-serious messages) -
/usr/local/sbin/faxsetup appeared to setup OK - faxmodem was
fine - recognized the modem - BTW, the modem does work OK, I can
fax using efax -
How do I use this darn thing? I tried to read the manual for
sendfax - I even tried the examples mentioned - but the mail to
fax did not work -
(faxd is running - hyla.conf is NOT automatically created - I do not
know which file it is looking for for hosts, users)
I am looking for a HOWTO - i.e. how to send email to the FAX SERVER
running HylaFax so it will automagically convert *.ps files to
tiffg3 - whatever and fax the darn thing.
Please post a simple sendfax example to check the program with a
already existing tiffg3 file -
Thanks!
(it is frustrating since _almost_ everything went smoothly)

Dear Tom,
take a look at
ftp://ftp.rubyriver.com/pub/jhardin/antispam/procmail-security.html.
They have links covering te topic you're looking for.
Near the bottom of the page there's a section called "Filtering Email for
Security" which deals with what you're looking for.

Sounds like we're all having a similar problem. I'm using SAMBA 2.0.3 on
RedHat 6.0. So far, nothing 'good' happening. Using the LinuxConf tool to
configure SAMBA produces nothing useful (but at least the LinuxConf tool
seems to work) and manuallly editing smb.conf doesn't work either. Maybe
we can 'pool' our experiences or pass on info when it becomes available?

My experience has been that I get something from nearly any book, but
I keep outgrowing them. Actually working with networks (one at home
and a bigger one at work) has taught me so much more than books have
that I would recommend simply going off and overreaching what you
think you can do, then fishing at Dejanews for the answers.
Using this approach I, a raw newby who has never really understood
Linux, managed to set up a new gateway at my work place. The books
that helped the most were the Sendmail (bat) and DNS and BIND
(grasshopper) O'Reilly books. They're really not about networking
anyway, but they framed the challenge. I learned the most of all by
trying to set up a firewall using ipfwadm. You learn that you know
nothing about what you thought you understood, when you have to start
accounting for packets.

Thank you, Clifford; I will do as you suggest. One of the problems of being
a newbie, is that everything (including protocol) must be learned the hard
way.
I'm using a plug & play Boca 33.6 on com1 in DOS ( and PS2 mouse) and I'm not
entirely sure how to configure the modem in Linux. I don't know if my
