Well, I've RTFM, and RTFNG, and pestered everyone I know.
I guess the next step is to post a question, eh? :-)

I've got an old Gateway 486-66 PCI machine, Slackware 3.5,
and an SN3200 NE2000-PCI card.

/proc/PCI says the card is there. So far so good.
/proc/IOPORTS doesn't see the card. Not good.
/proc/INTERRUPTS doesn't see the card either. DRAT!
/proc/DEVICES doesn't show eth0. @#$%^!

I have the ne2k-pci driver compiled into the kernel. It appears
to boot correctly.

The required 8390.o module exists but doesn't appear in
the /proc/MODULES file.

I've got DNCPcd loaded and configured according to its
README and a few good websites I've visited. I don't think
my problem is related to this (though it may also have a problem
later... just figure I haven't gotten far enough for DHCP to be an
issue.)

There is no option in my BIOS to dispable PnP and there
is no option with the network card to modify it there
either.

Any suggestions?

Would I have fewer problems if I just assembled a newer
machine? IOW: am I experiencing these difficulties because
of my old 486 or just because I'm lacking an essential set
of clues?

Help appreciated. :-)

Shawn

Subject: LAN Problem
Date: 12 Feb 1999 19:45:01 -0600

Hello,
I've posted this question before but no one was able to help. I'm posting
again because I have more info on my set up and I really want to get this
working.:-)

I have one PC clone running win98/RH5.2 using a SMC EtherEZ (8416) and one
Mac running OS8.5.1 using a Farallon EtherWave (a 3 port hub, sort of) on
the Built in AAUI. In Win98 I can share files w/ the mac via AppleTalk
using PC MacLAN so I beleave the hardware is fine.

My problem is that I can't get TCP to work between the Mac and RedHat.
Linux is detecting the Ether card at the right settings but they won't see
each other. The TCP setting on the Linux box's eth0 are:

IP-192.168.1.1
Subnet-255.255.255.0

The Mac is set to use the following setting on the Ethernet Port:

IP-192.168.1.2
Subnet-255.255.255.0

The Problem is the machines are acting like the other michine is on
another network. "ifconfig" says that eth0 is working and shows traffic
coming and going but I can't ping either machine from the other. The pings
show 100% packet loss. I also tried it with the Linux Box set up as a
router at the advise of a network guru friend but that didn't help. Also I
should note that if I ping the linux box from the linux box it works.

I'm sorry. I know this is a long posting but I'm stuck and I'd really like
to get this working. I would really like to learn Linux but I'm getting
really frustrated. I've read every readme, faq, and howto I can find and
nothing has worked and I hope that some one can help.

Thanks,
Lloyd

Yes really. I ran 'ldd netscape' which confirmed me on that one.

Yes, i also read something about that. For the moment i am not planning on
re-compiling Netscape also because i read on mozilla.org, that the only
code available is unstable after all. U can only download the version they
are actually developing on, with all the risks involved. It might even not
compile! So i won't give it a shot, or i must get really pissed by this freeze! :-)

Hello
Thanks for the assistance. I think that the CONNECT "/c" and ATZ did
the trick . So far connect first time every time.

BTW in Australia the phone numbers all have 8 digits and the area codes have
2 digits

If you are using a linux source tree that is not in the usual place,
i.e., /usr/src/linux, then you likely are using the (wrong) symbolic
links in /usr/include which point to directories in the linux source
tree that *is* in the right place.

Hi,

since I'm not able to send german umlauts via my ppp connection with
kmail, I try to figure out the reason for this. I noticed some messages
in my /var/log/warn file saying

pppd[274]: Receive serial link is not 8-bit clean:

Could this be part of the problem? And if so, how can I set up the ppp
link correctly??

Thanks
