Thank you for the answer. I put it direct in the script of the network

I hope this is correct.

D'oh! That's a great way to do it! I didn't even think of simply not
enabling the internal LAN card until it was needed.
That'll solve the problems I'm having with ipchains and FTP, I just
don't deal with it--go back to IP Masquerading under 2.0.36. (The
more I work with ipchains, the more I'm convinced it's just a horrible
hack.)
Now I just need to find a couple of hours to put everything back the
way it was...

You disable PnP through the BIOS. Just watch your PC on boot up and
you'll see a message on the screen to enter a specific key (or sequence)
to activate the BIOS screen. You should see a menu option for PnP
options and change the one that references the use of a PnP OS, exit and
save.

if you are trying to disable the plug and play capabilities on your ethernet
card, then there is usually a utuility on the driver disk which will allow
you to do this. For example 3com 509's have a utilty called 3c5x9cfg.exe on
the disk which you start (from dos) and allows you to assign resources and
disable plug and play.
try going to the manufacturers website (if you dont have the driver disk)
and getting the drivers. hopefully they have included such a utuilty,
chances are they have one, as NT usually requires it too.

The 30 seconds sounds like pppd sending 10 LCP requests spaced by 3
seconds and then giving up. This is mostly caused by a chat scripting
problem. I don't know of a reason for scripts to work under a late
2.0.x series kernel and not work with a 2.2.x kernel though, unless
it's that ppp-2.3.5 is not used - or perhaps the name of an option
changed between ppp versions.
: I read in the kernel documentation that there you need to upgrade to the

The latest is ppp-2.3.5, right? And you created new ttySx's rather
than just use mv to rename them? Don't be offended, these questions
are necessary to rule out those possiblities.
: has anyone else had this problem? if so, any ideas on how to fix it?

: if ya need any more information just ask...
Look clues in /var/log/messages and /var/log/debug, using chat -v and
the pppd debug option. Check routing with route and ppp interface
configuration with ifconfig. Post these, the appropriate log messages,
and the chat scripts if you'd like more help from the group.

Is anyone else having trouble with diald under Redhat 5.2? I can toggle the
ppp0 link up or down using dialdc, but my LAN clients no longer activate the
link when requesting things outside my LAN. Running tcpdump -l -i sl0 shows
absolutely no traffic. I don't remember this being the case under RH 5.0 when
using diald. Can anyone shed some light on this? I'm using pretty much the
same configuration under 5.2 as I was under 5.0. My family (especially my
kids) are counting on me to solve this and soon!

Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 03:49:19 +0000
I have got the http-gw to work properly, but setting up for ftp-gw as
per the FAQ doesn't give me the behaviour I was expecting. If I click
on a link in an http page which references an ftp site, I merely get a
nice page which displays a message from the ftp protocol
e.g.
a) attempt to connect directly to ftp://ftp.ntua.gr/FILELIST returns:
FTP Error - 200
200 Type set to I
b) attempt to connect to ftp://squirl.nightmare.com/pub/medusa returns:
FTP Error -250
250 CWD command successful
This is with my ftp proxy pointing to the same port as the http proxy,
as advised in the TIS FAQ
Am I missing the point on what ftp-gw is supposed to do? If so, what is
it supposed to do, and what should I use instead to give seamless
proxying of http/ftp/gopher via the browser? If, on the other hand, I am
not missing the point, where could I be going wrong?
(This TIS setup is going painfully slowly - if I can crack this I only
have SMTP left to go!).
Any help most gratefully received

Why my IPMASQ / PPTP used to work, doesn't now, but others using a NAT
in the same circumstances have no problem???
I am using Linux 2.0.36.
Something changed at the office and PPTP no more.
Specifically, it establishes the TCP connection okay, but then sends a
(UDP) GRE packet (Name lookup I believe) to a different host at the
office, with my bogonet address as the last 4 bytes of the message. That
host is firewalled so I cannot reach it, so I get the packet rejected.
The odd thing is that other people running a NAT and accessing the same
server via the same ISP have no problem. I am using bogonet 10.0.0.0.
Anyone know what is going on here? Our network/NT people at the office
have not been able to solve this.

How can I set up all email programs to get email off my Linux box
locally rather than through the pop server (each program doing it
individually).
What I want is to be able to use Pine or Elm and an X Windows email
program that will read email locally. I'm guessing it will go to
/var/spool/mail/$userid. What daemon should I be looking at to do this?
I've looked at sendmail, but so far the sendmail.cf has been beyond my
comprehension and I have not figured out where adequate documentation
for it (or alternatives/interfaces) exist.
Imapd, popd, inetd, and sendmail all appear to be canidates for the job
- I am not sure if I should be looking at setting up linux as an email
server or if there is a "simpler" alternative, because it is a 1 user
system and this is for personal email.
Thanks for your help.

Often the redhat install leaves 'GATEWAY=eth0' and 'GATEWAYDEV=0.0.0.0'.
This will give an error trying to install the default route while booting.
Unfornutately redhat install don't (at least used to) allow you to
specify that you don't need a default route.
You could install a dummy default route specifying your own IP address,
but that gives problems when you also need a default route for for
example a ppp connection, where the default route is realy needed.
That is because you can only have one default route in your system.

I'm a Linux newbie... and had the same situation. Even though I was logged
in as root the file had permissions for root to read and write but not to
execute the file. So, I changed the file permissions. I cd to the

should make the file have permissions for root to read, write and execute.

I'm not truly sure where you should go from here. The driver is buggy still
(ie: it locks the box when network utilazation is maxed, which is bad), but
I don't think that is your problem. Here's the REAL question.
What kernel and net-tools versions are you using?
A possible solution for you is this. Instead of what you are doing, do a
insmod rtl8139
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart
if it still doesn't work, and you aren't using version 2.2.x of the kernel
or something, I sadly don't know what to say.
