I use their 10/100 card and it works fine. Look are their web site and look
for Linux under 10/100. You'll see a drive for it as well.

Sorry, about all of the Cross-Posts, I'll only do this once...

I work for a company that is looking very hard for good Unix programmers.
People who understand and can program to the very core levels of the Unix
operating system (drivers, kernel etc...). We have a huge development
initiative underway and our HR dept. can't find the talent to fill the
desks. We're based in Southern California, but there's nothing saying that
we can't hire people part-time or full-time from anywhere.

Hello,

I've got a static IP and a dial up 56k line. I've also got a bunch of
other computers behind it on a 192.168.0.1/24 network, but haven't
really tried to get ipmasq and ipfw to work.
I was wondering if IPv6 just tails off the ends of IPv4 addresses at
all....
What I mean is... can I use my static IP and stick hosts behind it
with real IPv6 addresses that are just extensions of my IPv4 static IP?
or does IPv6 work completely different and I'm just crazy?

Another way I could ask this is: By having an IPv4 address, do I
basically inherit all the IPv6 space bellow it? or is IPv6 above it and
I'm still at the bottom of the barrel?

Thanks in advance!

They're all different. However, if somebody could come up with a USR driver
it would take care of a big chunk of them. The party that needs to deliver
this driver, or at least the design specifications, is 3COM. Write them a
letter. Everybody. A nice letter.

On the other hand, "what the modem is expecting the OS to do" also raises a
philosophical disagreement. It's not the OS's responsibility to be part
of a peripheral. For this reason, probably nobody who *can* would be working
on it.

Besides, who cares about hardware that can only work on intel boxen?

I had the same systoms when I installed RH 6.0. One of the things I forgot to

I've adopted an "it's voodoo" attitude about telnetting
into a Linux box - but I think that it's got a lot to do
with the Windows 9x telnet client. My guess is that
that is the client in question, isn't it?

I've found that I can consistently get a connection
to a Linux box if I open the client then select
Connect/Remote System, which brings up the connect
dialog box. Then, I select the VT100 that is *IN ALL CAPS*
and use a fully qualified domain name. This typically works.
The "vt100" that is the default (in all lower caps) fails sometimes.

This is annoying behaviour and however, I don't have the patience
to debug it more (to determine if there is really a causal relation-
ship here), or to get a better client. Therefore, I call it voodoo
and go on....

Hi all,

This is on a RH6.0 system running pppd 2.3.7 on both ends.

I have a home system (client) that I start PPP on to connect to my work
system so that I can work from home when needed. Everything was fine
under RH5.2 running ppp 2.3.5, but now when I try to connect I keep
receiving LCP: timeout sending Config-Request messages. OK, I know this
means there is something wrong with the link, but I can't figure out
what.

When I fire up kermit and try to log in to the server, I get this:

;+8
   0x88n+w88x;+8
                   0x88n+w88x;+8
                                                0x88n+w88x;+8

0x88n+w88x;+8

I have configured my serial line as such:

/dev/ttyS0, Line 0, UART: 16550A, Port: 0x03f8, IRQ: 4
 Baud_base: 115200, close_delay: 50, divisor: 0

bs0 vt0
ff0
-isig -icanon -iexten -echo -echoe -echok -echonl -noflsh -xcase -tostop

-echoprt -echoctl -echoke

Yet in order to look at it I have to kill mgetty and the results come
back as such:

speed 38400 baud; rows 0; columns 0; line = 0;
intr = <undef>; quit = ^\; erase = <undef>; kill = ^U; eof = ^D; eol =
<undef>;
eol2 = <undef>; start = ^Q; stop = ^S; susp = ^Z; rprnt = ^R; werase =

lnext = ^V; flush = ^O; min = 1; time = 0;

bs0 vt0
ff0
-isig -icanon -iexten -echo -echoe -echok -echonl -noflsh -xcase -tostop

-echoprt -echoctl -echoke

What I can't figure out is what is changing the port characteristics and
how do I stop it from doing so? Hopefully, once this is straightened
out ppp will start working again.

BTW, I've tried different serial ports at each end as well as different
modems to no avail. I even replaced my serial cards also to no joy.

Any clues/thoughts/suggestions would be most welcome.

TIA.

for networking, but the 6.0 install does not include the 3c589 card

In the past, I've had to build a NIC driver into the kernel, but had
some help, and forget exactly the steps involved.

Any instructions and/or info on how to get this NIC working would
be greatly appreciated (Email is preferable).

Sorry, I misread your question. I thought you wanted to forward some
traffic coming to a specific port on router to an internal machine.

I don't know anything about NAT support apart from IP Masquerading.

You need to use smbmount as root. type "smbmount -h" to get a listing of
options.
We use an NT Domain security model here, so I use the following to mount a
Windows share: "smbmount //NetBIOS_Name/Share_Name /mount/point -U
username_to_connect_with -P password_for_username -c NetBIOS_Name_of_client"

Example: "smbmount //foo/bar /mnt/foobar -U joe -P blow -c client"

The mount point on your Linux machine needs to exist before using the
smbmount command.

Subject: establishing PPP with an ISA-PnP modem
Date: Wed, 19 May 1999 15:34:33 GMT

The modem is a "Diamond SupraExpress 336i Voice PnP" modem. The strange
thing is, if I configure it using isapnptools there is no error, but
when I try to setserial it to the proper com port it stops working. Even
stranger, the modem seems to work fine if I use it via Minicom. Here's a
short excerpt of my session:

> Flashnet Communications Unauthorized Access Prohibited **amax27.d.hou1

Now, copying straight out of the HOWTO's instructions for establishing a
PPP connection, I quit Minicom without resetting and typed in "pppd
-detach /dev/ttyS2 38400" only to have nothing really happen. Here is
the tail end of my /var/log/ppp.log:

> May 19 01:00:46 promise pppd[195]: pppd 2.3.5 started by root, uid 0
> May 19 01:00:46 promise pppd[195]: Using interface ppp0

Now, I understand that this message essentially means that I was unable
to get an 8 bit data connection as the provider continued to send me 7
bit ascii connection information, but don't understand if it's right at
all. Could anyone perhaps tell me by looking at this if my modem is
configured properly, because after all I want to be sure that my modem
is working (in the examples I've shown, i didn't set up the modem with
isapnptools).

Here's a simple way to use minicom, with a ppp connection.

First, open minicom, use ATDT to dial the number, put in your username and
password. Once it gives you the PPP session crap, hit ALT-Q, to quit
without hangup.. then a root prompt, type:

# pppd -d -deatch /dev/ttyS1 115200 &

..remember, replace ttyS1 with your equivalent if need be. Then run an
ifconfig, and you should have a ppp0 interface.

Subject: pppd compilation error
Date: Wed, 19 May 1999 16:26:30 GMT

I am currently configuring a powerpc based mac to be my firewall for a
small network at home.

After using minicom to connect to my isp and manually invoking pppd, I
received an error message indicating that the kernel was not
configured for ppp support.

(Where I began... 2.0.33 from roughcuts redhat cdrom)

This began a series of downloads, including:

kernel source 2.2.7
ppp 2.3.4
ipfwadm 2.3.0

I have successfully built the new kernel...

make mrproper
make config
make dep
make zImage
make modules
make modules_install

However, I wanted to verify that I had the ppp utilities correctly
built before moving the new kernel into /boot. I went to the
ppp-2.3.4 extract directory and tried to follow along.

Running ./configure was fine. make kernel resulted no changes...
Saying that everything in the 2.2.7 source tree was newer than these
files. I then again rebuilt the kernel as indicated in the ppp readme.

Following the rebuild of the kernel, I tried to build the programs for
ppp. The readme indicates that I should simply issue a make at the top
level directory of the ppp source.

When I do this, I get the results shown:

make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/ppp-2.3.4/pppd'
cc -O2 -pipe -Wall -g -D_linux_=1 -DHAVE_PATHS_H -DIPX_CHANGE

make[1]: *** [lcp.o] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/ppp-2.3.4/pppd'
make: *** [all] Error 2
[root@localhost ppp-2.3.4]#

It appears that there is a problem with the
/usr/include/linux/socket.h file for this build. I am pretty sure that
these files are the defaults that were loaded when the OS was
installed.

Is there something that I should be doing to update these files for
the latest version of the kernel?

Thanks,

Steve Adams

Subject: RedHat 6.0 Configuration
Date: Wed, 19 May 1999 06:46:10 -0700

I have tried to config RH 6.0 my machines many times but it alwasy something
that causes the package not to work right. For example, sound card, network
card, and internet interface with PPP. MS windows is more friendly which I
don't have any problems but it is not stable. I have gone thru to read
documentations several times but no lucks. I have re-installed it several
times but it is not working.

Here are my problems:
PPP is working but the netscape is not seeing the PPP.
Used KPPP, the modem is connected to my ISP, but the netscape cannot see it
either.
I have config my soundcard awe64 the same way the ms-windows (IO, IRQ, DMA
ETC...) and it is fails.

Is there any one can help me to overcome these problems ( I have dealed to
these for 2 years now to make Linux to work on my machine).
