Well...., I think it rather depends on the use to which the two might be
put. My home has a small LAN served by a caching proxy and the hit rates are
pretty dismal. Hardly worth the fuss of setting it up. I suspect that this
would be a different story in an office with a dozen or more users all
hitting the same few sites all day long.

I've been using Isaac Asimov's planet names, mainly from his Foundation

aurora

anacreon

Trantor is too obvious.

My use of the term "PLUG BOARDING" is I term I have heard
through work only, I haven't seen it anywhere else. Anyway here is my
problem.

I am running RH 5.2 on a Pentium 150 PC.
I belong to a broadband cable service, and I'm using IP Masquerade to
connect a 3 PC lan to the internet.

I want to get to one of my PC's via PCAnywhere. Where I work this
"PLUG BOARDING" thing is taking a port on the firewall and mapping it
back to a port (that is app specific) on the on the pc (with the
illegal IP address) running the app. Is this possible??

This is the extent of my firewall permissions.

/sbin/ipfwadm -F -p deny
/sbin/ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.1.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0

Any help in this tter would be greatly appreciated.

Hi .

I use Red Hat 5.2 and bind 8. I have created and configured bind with webmin
( newest version ). So long, it works: with my second comp, the apache web
server, I can jump in the internet without problems and can start my own
homepage, too from a client win98 comp with inetexplorer.
But if I start nslookup on my webserver, he can't find it.

On my nameserver, my resolv.conf looks like that:
domain c-i-s.net
nameserver 127.0.0.1

and on my webserver
domain c-i-s.net
nameserver x.x.x.x

What could it be?

MS Proxy Server, by default, uses NT's encrypted authentication scheme.
Change this to clear-text only, or both, and you should get the
authentication dialog box in Netscape. Enter a valid username and PW and
away you go. Alternatively, you could set proxy server to allow anonymous
access.

Have a look at Samba (SMB) - this does file and print serving using the same
protocols as NT/LanManager/LanServer. There are a number of how-tos, help docs

A 386 should be acceptable. The routing takes very little
processor. Memory is more important than the processor. If you decide
to use proxies rather than masq it becomes a different story. Some of
the proxies are CPU pigs. I'm using a 486-33 as my masq box for a DSL
line.

Our Sun Ultra workstations have names like heaven, nirvana, olympus,
etc.
Conversely, the first Ultra server we got was promptly named hell - that
way I could tell my users where to go to when they wanted more cycles
;-)

Our Linux boxes are generally named after roman emperors: Nero,
augustus,
etc. This began with the first Linux box "officially" installed. Its
sole
task is to host a CD-ROM recorder. And by calling it nero I could make
an awful pun about it in danish (sorry, it doesn't translate).

Back in the old days when I admin'ed a bunch of AIX boxes, the main
server
was called 'sol' (latin for sun), and the clients were named after
planets.

The win95 box is running the client for ms network and File and Print

When I print the postscript test page from redhat Im getting the code
printed and no colors, instead of the redhat logo and whatever graphics are
supposed to be printed (the printer works fine when accessed from win95). I
have ghostscript 4.03 and ghostscript-fonts 4.03 installed. Does anyone have
any suggestions on how to remedy this?

Admittedly I was a little vague on my original post, it was late, I was
tired, blah, blah...

The two boxes are connected by Cat 5 cable and a Linksys 5 port hub. The
Win machine is running 98, with a Netgear 301TX. The Alpha has it's
built in DEC chip card. The cables are new Belkin, though if I can beg
buy or borrow another pair from anywhere I'll try swapping them out.

The machines are set up as the Alpha/Linux being a server with samba
installed. The Alpha is running 2.0.35 (soon to be .36, and possibly
2.2.something later on). Samba is at version 1.18p10.

Here is a good example of what is going on...

D:\Installations>ftp
ftp> open headunit
Connected to headunit.loftnet.net.
220 headunit.loftnet.net FTP server (Version wu-2.4.2-academ[BETA-18](1)

ftp> type binary

ftp> lcd
Local directory now D:\Installations.

ftp: 1058203 bytes received in 144.67Seconds 7.31Kbytes/sec.
ftp> put webmin-0_65_tar.gz

226 Transfer complete.
ftp: 1058203 bytes sent in 1.27Seconds 833.23Kbytes/sec.
ftp>

But it happens when dragging and dropping in Explorer (several Samba
Shares are mapped to drives) saving large files from within programs,
etc.

For goodness sake I really don't want to load NT on the Alpha, but
7.31Kbps is totally unacceptable. The friggin file is just barely over 1
Meg. 2 and a half minutes? I get better thru put from my T-1. Makes me
want to just put all my machines on the Internet and transfer everything
over FTP!!!

This is really driving me nutso. I'll play with the card settings
tonight until I get tired of rebooting. Anyone remember the Reg Key that
the MTU is under?

Grr.

thanks for the info, but I still can't get it to work. The problem with the
xwindows ppp setup is that when I activate it... nothing happens! It says
that it's 'active', but the modem doesn't dial out at all - the channel
lights are not on. Also, I might mention that the DTR light on the 3com
Impact IQ is off until I run minicom or seyon.

With minicom, I can break into the connection to get the login prompt by
pressing <enter>... but this only works if I reset the modem to factory
defaults before dialing.
After I login I get a message about starting ppp, and it gives me my
assigned ip automatically, then I see about 6 or 7 lines of "ppp garbage"
before I get the "No Carrier" response.

Brian

I am interested in speaking with some Linux users (prefereably
Network/System Admins) in the Houston Texas area. The people I would
like to speak with must be EXPERTS in all aspects of setting up and
maintaining Linux in a production networked environment (especially one
that includes machines w/ other OSes on them).

If you are interested and QUALIFIED there is a potential to be involved
in an interesting project and possibly even make some $$$ in the
process. If you have doubts in your qualifactions and skills w/ Linux
then you need not respond to this posting. Please respond by email to

I assure you that this is not another annoying recruiting company to
bother the H-LL out of you, it is an opportunity to help promote Linux
in production environments and hopefully have a little fun in the
process.

I look forward to speaking with any/all qualified individuals.

I have 2 computers (1 slackware 3.5, kernel 2.0.34 1 win98) and each one has
a NETGEAR FA310TX 10/100 NIC on it. I have a fast ethernet NETGEAR hub (4
ports) and they can't ping each other through the hub but I can ping each
NIC locally. I always thought that if you could ping the ip address of the
NIC locally, there is nothing wrong with the card. That led me to the
conclusion that the hub was bad. To test that, I bought a crossover cable
and decided to ping each machine from the other machine (win98--->linux,
linux--->win98) and I am getting the same symptoms, request timed out and
100% packet loss, respectively. Can anybody give me some suggestions as to
what in the world is going on? Since I can't ping through the crossover, I
can't blame the hub as faulty? If I remove the card in win98, it will say
"New Hardware Found", so i don't know if the win98 NIC is bad. Similarly, if
I do 'ifconfig' on the linux NIC, it gives all the information about it, it
uses the tulip.c driver originally written by Donald Becker and modified by
NETGEAR. I will try to re-install the latest driver and recompile the kernel
in the meantime. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please feel
free to e-mail me.
