Subject: Kernel 2.2.x: PPP freezes
Date: Sat, 22 May 1999 20:07:12 GMT
Short description: Under kernel 2.2.x, the PPP connection simply appears
to freeze with nothing happening - no DNS, strange tcpdump output,
nothing. Everything works fine under kernel 2.0.36.
Long description: When using kernel 2.2.9 (and earlier versions), all
PPP connections freeze after I get my local and remote IP addressed in
/var/log/ppp.log. I can't telnet anywhere, perform DNS lookups, and I
can't even ping the remote nameserver(s) or remote IPs. I can, however,
ping my own IP.
I know that this is a symptom of using early versions of PPP(d), but
upgrading to 2.3.8 doesn't solve it. Neither does upgrading everything
on my system to the latest versions. I'm using Debian 2.1 slink, and
upgrading to what is essentially potato (libc6, etc) doesn't cure the
problem.
Things I've tried:
* Adding nobsdcomp, novj, novjccomp, and others (can't remember at
present) to my /etc/ppp/options file - don't have any effect.
* Compiling PPP into the kernel as a module & also directly into it.
* Not compiling the kernel with APM support (as that could have affected
things)
I don't have IP masquerading or any firewall in place, and my
hosts.{allow|deny} files are fine, as they work in 2.0.36. All modem
IRQs are set correctly.
Output from various things while connected:
# route -n

195.147.160.5 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.255 UH 0 0 0 ppp0

(I manually added loopback there, but leaving it without doesn't change
anything. (I now know that most route programs only show the loopback
interface in a /proc device)

I believe that's all the info anyone should require. If you need any
kdebug output or details of my kernel config, then I'll supply that,
too. I've spent at least 5 on phone bills trying to sort this out, but
nothing works.
So, if anyone can suggest anything, then please do :-) (please? Pretty
please with cherries on top?). I'll be e-mailing the pppd author if
no-one can solve this (that'll be my last resort, though).
Thanks in advance,

Subject: Kernel 2.2 TCP incompatible with certain Unices?
Date: Sat, 22 May 1999 20:03:37 GMT
I would be grateful to hear from any TCP/IP gurus regarding this
puzzling problem.
I have an SMP Pentium Pro box that runs kernel 2.2.9. While the other
machines on the LAN (Windows and Linux) have no problems, this single
machine cannot fetch data from certain sites -- not all sites, just a
few. It seems to stall, even while the 2.0.36 machine next to it
happily downloads the site.
The two sites I've noticed this stall on are:
http://www.werbach.com
http://www.winfiles.com (sorry :)
It's interesting to note that queso reports that both these sites run
"BSDi or IRIX."
I've booted the SMP box back to a 2.0.36 kernel (the stock RH 5.2 one)
and it then works fine! Am I finding evidence that the 2.2 kernel (or
at least, the 2.2 kernel as I've configured it) has a TCP
incompatibility with a BSDi/IRIX TCP stack? For what it's worth, I've
not only tried recompiling the kernel as minimally as possible
(including non-SMP), I've also swapped NICs to see if it made a
difference; nothing changed the stalling. I've also ruled out the
firewall by deactivating it. I've been using GNU 'wget' in runlevel 3
to do this testing.
I'm happy to hear any and all suggestions! Thanks.
Regards,
Chris Powell

I suggest you investigate all of the file systems for Linux. You'll find
that there are a few of them already.
NFS (mostly UNIX)
Coda (totally new)
SMB/Samba (LanManager/MS file and printer sharing)
These are just the obvious systems which are "just lying around". You can
find all of them in the newer 2.2 kernels.
Happy hacking,

In your smb.conf file makd SURE that your "workgroup = ???" is the
same as the workgroup listed in NT under indentification.

Subject: Configuration for high-spec NFS server
Date: 22 May 1999 22:07:51 +0100
Hi there,
I'm involved in specifying a new server for a research group,
which requires a high performance NFS server. Under
consideration are a Sun Enterprise 450 with a StorEdge A1000
external RAID box running Solaris, or a PC-based Linux solution,
as detailed below.
I'm interested in the likely NFS throughputs that could be
expected from this configuration, as well as any helpful
comments as to the general suitability of the design.
Server configuration:
* Dual/Quad Intel Pentium III Xeon (512K LII) at 500MHz
* 1GB ECC EDO RAM
* Mylex eXtremeRAID 1100 64bit PCI RAID Controller (64MB cache)
* 6 x 36.4GB Seagate Barracuda LVD Ultra-2 SCSI disks (3 per
channel on the RAID controller - in RAID 5 array)
* 3Com 3C985 Gigabit Ethernet NIC
Network configuration:
* 3Com Switch 3300 10/100 (48 ports total) with Gigabit modules
Client configuration:
* Mixed Sun hardware, from SparcStation 4 to Ultra 60
* Miscellaneous PC Linux boxes (Pentium II)
System load:
* 15-20 simultaneous users
* Typically multi-gigabyte datasets stored as UNIX files
* 50/50 read/write load

I have SuSE 6.0 on both my workstations and my server. I have yp,NIS,and
NFS set up and working. I have my user account set up on my server and am
using yp to access it from my workstation. I know how to mount my home
directory from my server under /home/username on my workstation. My
question is, how can I set it up where my rights will work on a NFS share.
Locally, when I write a file it sets the username and group name according
to my login. Writing to a NFS share the username get sets to "nobody" and
the group to "nogroup". If someone could recommend a good book on linux
networking I would be very grateful.

I have a small network which all get routed through a Slackware machine
using ipfwadm. I want to monitor the masqueraded packets but I can't
seem to get it to work. Here is the line I have added:
ipfwadm -F -a m -S 192.168.8.1/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0 -o
I thought the "-o" at the end of the line would allow me to do this - is
this right?
Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: RHL/Samba/Gnome error
I have used the smbmount command to mount a WinNT Server 'share' on my
RHL6.0 box as /mnt/smb
Accessing this share/mount point works 100% fine fronm either a command
prompt or through programs like StarOffice, gEdit, Gnumeric, etc..
However when attempting to use the Gnome File Manager, 'clicking' into
the /mnt/smb directory causes the following error msg to appear:
'File exists but can not be stat-ed. ICON? No Such file or directory'
This msg appears in a pop-up window, and can _usually_ be handily
dispatched by clicking the 'OK' button. You can then do whatever you
want within the /mnt/smb directory. The message will occasionaly
reappear.
A good prt of the time, however, the 'OK' button appears as dimmed and
as such cannot be clicked. Worse, the entire X-session is hung up at
this point!
This seems to be something to with a messed-up inode? Any tip, hints,
fixes, etc?
TIA

I want to set up my 486/66, 20 meg ram to be a router and mail server.
I am getting a 56k modem fairly soon, but I need to know how to set up
the software end first. I am running RedHat 6.0, and I can't figure out
the routing stuff at all. The mail server end should supposedly work
now. I edited the inetd.conf file and uncommented the line that had the
"pop3d" tag on it, but I still can't get authentication.

My questions:
a) WHERE should I write the ipchains configuration commands?
b) WHAT configuration commands should I write??
Thanx a mill!

Are there any Linux or FreeBSD tools that measure the quality of service
of a network connection? We just had DSL installed at work and there are
often 30 to 45 second 'blackouts' where there is no communication. It's
not machine specific, all of our machines note the events simultaneously.
I would like to document these 'blackouts'. I'm thinking of hacking up the
ping source but I feel that it would be a safe bet that something already
exists. I wouldn't bet against something already existing in the Linux of
FreeBSD distribution. Thanks for any info.
