It is very-very simply:
first, turn on some options in kernel (and recompile it)
Networking options:
[*] Network firewalls
[*] TCP/IP networking
[*] IP: firewalling
[*] IP: masquerading
[*] IP: ipautofw masquerading (EXPERIMENTAL)
[*] IP: ICMP masquerading
[*] IP: always defragment
or load these modules if you like modular kernel.
After that, connect to your ISP.
Just type:
/sbin/ifconfig
before and after you have connected to your ISP.
After connection a new device will appear, you will see it. In most
commonly cases it will be called ppp0.
Now type:
ipfwadm -F -a m -W ppp0
^^^^ or other network device if it is not ppp0
Now your masquerade is set up! ;-)
P.S. You don't need to retype ipfwadm on each connection lost and
reconnection. Unlike some well-known megasuxx OS ;) Linux does NOT close
all connection when modems is hangs up. After reconnect in most cases you
will continue all sessions, downloadings, etc as if no hang up happens!

I had a similar problem. The DOS diagnostics passed but
Linux RH 5.2 would not see it. When I changed the IRQ/Base address
combination to something else it worked. (I dpn't remeber
the bad and good combinations). Try a few different combinations.

I am using RH 5.2 and I have set it up as a ppp server. It connects
okay but passes traffic only to the server. No traffic goes to
the ethernet card. The messages entries look like this (xxx is a real

The easiest thing is to put
/sbin/route add default ppp0
in /etc/ppp/ip-ip. This will make ppp0 the default route for the duration
of the ppp connection and you'll automatically get the eth0 default route
back after the connection terminates.

I had similar problem with my linux and iMac. What I had to do (still I
have to do) is reset the cable modem (puch tiny switch on back panel). I

Beowulf requires applications designed and compiled for
parallel processing. I don't know of a DB server nor
a web server which can do that. Maybe MOSIX could be
used with Apache, but not Beowulf without altering
Apache. Even DIPC applications have to at least be
compiled with it enabled. MOSIX is more transparent,
but it can only do process-level migration.
Using several servers is the obvious and simpler solution.
Particularly if you keep scalability in mind as you create
the web server and allow future expansion to multiple
servers for the same services.
There also are ways to have redundancies with servers
taking of the tasks of failed machines. Look around
for the Linux High Availability info...

Move to the Bay Area.
There is a tremendous mismatch between supply and
demand here. Supply of programmers is way too small
for the demand for them.
A decent contract programmer who actually finishes jobs
in a respectable time frame makes $50-90/hr, depending
on the reputation of the programmer and the sort of work.

In order for the pppd proxyarp to work the local address and the remote
address must be IPs on the same subnet.

Hmmm. It appears the only reason this is occuring is because tcpdump
is asking for DNS on each packet. Not sure why, because tcpdump is
supposed to cache hostnames (at least according to the source code).
Anyway, when running tcpdump with -n, this problem does not occur.

I would recommend going to http://www.loonie.net/~eschenk/diald.html. The most
likely cause of diald dialing when you think it shouldn't is that you do not
have the '/etc/hosts' file set up correctly. Double, double check this file and
make sure that you can 'ping' according to this hosts file. There are some
things that Win9X does to diald that have to be filtered out, but that does not
sound like your problem. Keith

I'm having the same problem with this network card on some of my machines too.
I did fixed the problem with downloading the latest version of the driver from
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html
just get the driver and recompile your kernel and it should fix your problem.

I'm having an interesting issue while getting networking up and running
on my new linux system. I am using hardware that I know works as I ran
a RedHat 5.1 system on it successfully for several months, AND I have
been able to ping machines local to my new Mandrake(Redhat 5.2) machine
with the hardware.
The problem is that I cannot ping other machines (even the gateway)
using IP addresses via my cable modem. No replys to the pings are
detected. HOWEVER, when I disconnect from the cable modem, and connect
my Mandrake system to my hub, which is connected to a second Win98
machine, I can ping that machine and it can ping me by IP address.
Hmm.... must be a gateway problem, or a problem with the cable modem,
right? Nope. If I reconfig my Win98 machine to work with the cable
modems settings (which would now be the same as my Mandrake system's
settings) I can successfuly web surf, ping, dns lookups, etc....
My settings on my working win98 machine when connected to the cable
modem is:
IP 24.112.88.93
Netmask 255.255.252.0
Gateway 24.112.88.1
DNS 24.2.9.33 and 24.2.9.34 (not an issue... gotta get the gateway
workin first!!)
Another symptoom is when i run route, I get the following output:
[root@cr458633-a /root]# route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
24.112.88.0 * 255.255.252.0 U 0 0 4 eth0
127.0.0.0 * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 2 lo
And then here it hangs, for over 4-5 minutes, until the last line
finally pops out:

IF i run route -n, I get:

I've read the networking How-To and followed it step by step, and
everything works according to it. Oh, ya, ifconfig provides some nice
output, but we already KNOW that the hardware works as we can ping a
local machine no problem - its just when we try to get linux to use the
default gateway, it goes kaka.
anyways, for the sake of completeness, here's ifconfig's output:

As an aside, I REALLY like KDE's desktop.... pretty slick. Mandrake
otherwise looks really nice, I just wish I knew what I was missing. If
there are any other files or output that I need to generate to help
solve this problem, let me know. I think I've looked at every file in
/etc and /etc/rc.d.
Any ideas? Solutions would be greatly appreciated <grin>.
And yes, the netmask IS 255.255.252.0. It works for the Win98 machine,
and it used to work on my old RedHat 5.1 system. I wonder what
changed????
5.1 worked right outta the box, 5.2 just seems to want something
else......
