Subject: NIC will not be found
Date: 23 May 1999 21:57:27 GMT

Hallo,

I have a problem installing a NIC under Red Hat Linux v5.1 and v5.2

My Configuration:
PC 486/66, 16MB, VL-Bus
NIC: Enet VL-32, running for over an year under Red Hat Linux v4.2.

Red Hat Linux v4.2 foungd the NIC and set it up properly.

The display while the machine comes up:
eth0: PCnet32 at 0x300, 00 80 48 d8 0f 29, probed IRQ 10, no DMA
needed.
Lance32.c:v0.10 28.4.96 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Now I tryed to update the system to Red Hat Linux v5.1 bzw. v5.2 but
every time happens the same: The NIC wil not be found automatically.

Is there somewhere a bootparameter I can check or configure?

In the setup there is a point to give in optional Boot parameters. But
I don't know the right syntax
Can anyone help me setting up the NIC properly?

TIA
C:

I pulled the NIC card from my Windows 98 machine that was connected to the
Internet and put it into my Linux Box and reloaded 6.0. The card was auto
detected and the install went well. When I booted up for the first time I
was able to ping IP numbers but not urls, Netscape didn't work either. I'll
use the pump update tomorrow and try again. At least I'm one step ahead of
where I was. Now here is another problem(s): even though I was able to get
one NIC to work I'm not getting my others too. I had planned on connecting
the cable modem to a older 10 base card (Linksys Etherlink Combo Card II)
since the cable modem doesn't even go that fast and save the 10/100 cards
for connection to my hub for internet access via IP Masq and for file
sharing. Linux seems to accept the 10 base card (a NE2000 PCI clone) but
doesn't auto detect it. Linux won't let me use the card I was going to use
for connecting to the hub (ever though it is a slightly different version of
the same card I've hooked the cable modem up to.) So I'm going to use the
two cards I managed to get working in the linux box and put the others in my
Windows machine since they are not as picky. Getting the two cards to work
together maybe a problem. Now for the static ip card do I need to enter a
domain name and etc for it to work on my LAN? Or do I just need the IP
(192.168.0.1 in this case)??

You need some modules to add masquerading support for some applications:
/sbin/modprobe -l ip_masq*

I was wondering if people could indicate the NIC
they are using with rogers@home (canada) under linux
and what version of the kernel they're using. A rating
of how well the card works would be appreciated.

First of all, Staroffice is now at 5.1, so you have a pretty old version
and it might be advantageous to download the latest (easier to install
as well). libxm.so.2 is an old version of the Motif library, and so
depends on it. You might be able to use lesstif.

At the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ directory.

1) Install the rgrep-0.98.4-6.i386.rpm package from RedHat 5.2.
2) Assuming that some of the IP addresses is 192.168.X.X , then you
might look for the involved files with:
  rgrep 192.168 /etc/*

I am not convinced that DSL is really such a good deal. Bryan's rate is
just about right for the US market. I pay about $95 per month for 368K in
both directions and this is one of the cheaper rates available.

The argument that DSL versus cable modem is like switched versus shared is
less than convincing. The CSMACD algorithm means that when you have the
bandwidth it is all yours and that no one can hog it. The inherently
bursty nature of computer traffic means that loads need to reach 40% to 70%
of available bandwidth (depending on the media) before there is any
noticeable degradation in performance. Even if DSL was intrinsically
faster, few carriers offer a decent CIR on the bandwidth your are paying
for. My carrier (GTE) only give a 32 Kbps CIR on all DSL services (even if
you pay for the 768/1.544 plan) and do not offer the full 768K/3.2M bps
they claim to cabbala of.

I am beginning to suspect that, for most people, cable modem is a better
choice than DSL. Either is better than ISDN :-)

Ok, I just got my Linux box connected to the net via my cable modem. I've
also got a 2nd NIC card in my machine up and running. I assigned the 2nd
NIC a static IP (192.168.0.1) and nothing else no domain name etc.. I'm
able to ping both ways between it and my other machines (Win98 with IP's of
192.168.0.X) Now I want to setup the Linux box to provide internet access
to the other machines (IP MASQ) and share files (Samba.) What is the
easiest way to do this? (I'd prefer to use the Gnome GUI over command line
junk) I realize I'll need to alter the smb.conf file for Samba. I'm a
little confused as to what values need to be changed so that I can see my
linux box under 98's control panel??? As for IP Masq'n where do I even
start, I need lots of help on that. My Kernel shouldn't need to be
recompiled for it since it is build 2.2.5. How do I enable it and set it up
to handle this???

Hello,
I tried to setup a DNS server according to the literature. It seems the
server does not work:

bash-2.02# nslookup
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.2: Non-existent
host/domain
Default Server: koeln.shuttle.de
Address: 194.95.247.252

My configuration:

192.168.0.2 is the Nameserver, which is connected to the internet via an
ISDN-line. 194.95.247.252 is the external DNS.

In the configuration files I find adrresses like "adamix.paradix." and
I translated that to the FQD with a trailing dot,
"dadoka.h.ni.schule.de." in my case.

May be this is wrong?

Any help welcome. Hints how and where I can get more information about
the status of my installation are most welcome.

Thanks
Karl

Thanks guys for all the info. I got my cable modem working now. All I need
was to call Mediaone and have them change the MAC to that of the card in my
Linux box, set it to use DHCP, and install the pump patch. Works great now.
I've also got my 2nd network card in the Linux box to work. Now I need help
getting my other machines (Windows 98) to use it as a gateway to the
internet via IP Masq. Since I'm using Redhat 6 (kernel 2.2.5) I think
support for this is built in and I won't need to recompile the kernel?? I
also need to get Samba to work. At the moment all I can go with the 2nd NIC
is ping the other machines and vice versa.

: Could this be a kernel or ppd bug? I know of one other person on the

I really don't think it's a kernel or pppd bug - as I remarked before
I'm using 2.2.9 and ppp-2.3.8 with no problem.

It "smells" like a transparency problem because of the large number
of PPP negotiation exchanges with very slow progress plus restarts.
The asyncmap, the device file configuration, or, maybe, the internal
modem AT profile.

It's difficult to know how to suggest this without seeming to be, well,
single-minded, but you really ought to check the IRQ. A simple definitive
test is to add the expect/send '' ATZ followed by OK '\c' at the
start of the chat script. The time difference between the time that ATZ
is sent and the time that OK is received should be no more than 2 seconds
*maximum*, and is usually less than 1 second. A misconfigured IRQ will
result in a time difference on the order of 19 seconds. The check to
be done while using the 2.2.9 kernel and ppp-2.3.8 of course.

I've run dry of suggestions at this point but wish you luck in solving
the problem. If there's some way I can help further just let me know.

There are many ways to do this.

Two that spring to mind are:
1) check out the man pages for logrotate.
2) write a cron to copy the log file off and then do a "cp /dev/null
access_log".

#! /bin/bash
LOGFILE="log file name with full path"
BACKUP="full filename of where you want to put the copy"
#if you want a date extention to the copy file name
# BACKUP=${BACKUP}.`date '+%d%m%C%y'`
cp $LOGFILE $BACKUP
cp /dev/null $LOGFILE
# end of example

Anybody else got any other methods?

Jay,

The SMC Ether EZ10/100 uses the realtek driver - it's the rtl8139. The
driver that shipped with Redhat 5.2 did not work (for me at least) - so you
might want to try finding the latest driver on the web.

Becker's site has some good info on this card.

http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/rtl8139.html

You may even be able to find a precompiled version that works
somewhere.....good luck !

( I never got mine working.....instead went with 3com and Linksys....)

I am running Slackware. To be precise:

Problem: What's the Hangup with my pppd daemon dameon? Help.

What I gather is the HW works perfectly but I'm setting the wrong "I
don't have a clue whatevers!". The pppd daemon dies suddenly. It dies
damn good too. I'm tired of its deathly ;-) demonstration. Help.

I've tried many permutations of my userid/password combinations. All
valid I might ;-) add. Valid in the sense that the properly formatted
combinations somehow "exist" because it's paid for. That kind of
valid. The Format of whether I am supposed to use "expressnet" or
"ex-pressnet" or "Nothing At All" in userid combination has caused
considerable mindless frustration.

Therefore, I also haven't actually elimated the possiblity that my
typing is so misinputed by These Tired User's Hands...

Still, I reckon it's not due to bad typing at the userid/password
typing level that is the source of my pppd daemon troubles. What else
could it be? The 3com 3c900B modem seems to be recognized fine for
here is the dmesg line at startup

53:eth0: 3Com 3c900 at 0xf880, 00:10:5a:a4:0a:f1, IRQ 11

and the module 3c59x is uploaded via the /etc/rc.d/* files.

Per the excellent instructions, needing minor grammatical corrections,
given on

here's my consequent ifconfig output:

Have I explained my dilemma clearly and specifically enough? TIA for all
feedback.

The Modem Cablemodem combo works perfectly fine under my Win95 OS.
This and other tests verify that my HW is operational.

Subject: remote root telnet in RedHat 6.0
Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 22:57:59 GMT

I used to have RedHat 5.1...I modified /etc/securetty and
/etc/security/access.conf to allow all network ports and all users to login.

I just installed RedHat 6.0, modified the same files but I still cannot
telnet in as root (other users can telnet it).

Any Ideas?

Subject: ipfwadm to nt problem
Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 16:24:07 -0700

I am having intermittent problems when using an NT client behind a linux box
running ipfwadm.

Ordinarily, everything works fine. I can very happily communicate through
the firewall and masquerade IP packets all day long. However, for unknown
reasons, my NT machine is sometimes unable to ping the far-side of my
firewall - some sort of timeout occurs and the ping is unsuccessful. When I
reboot the NT machine, all is fine.

I would appreciate any hint anyone might have as to how I can track down
what is going on. Does anyone know of any diagnostic software for an NT
client hitting ipfwadm?

My set up is (for those who are curious):

NT Client (192.168.0.2) ----> Linux eth0 (192.168.0.1)  ----> Linux eth1
(201.155.77.53) ----> cable modem service ISP

>From 192.168.0.2 I can always ping 192.168.0.1, but not always reach
201.155.77.53, which is on the same machine as 192.168.0.1

All help appreicated.
