um, never mind. I re-read the man pages for pppd and chat, figured out
what /etc/ppp/options was all about and wrote a couple shell scripts.

Too bad SuSE can't be a little more helpful regarding their PPP
implementation.

Thank all of you for the information. I would like to connect the
server in the Los Angeles area.

I don't believe that colocation will work for me because of my system
setup.

Frac. T1 <<<>>> Linux Webserver <<<proxy firewall and IP filtering >>>
Linux SQL server with CCVS credit card software.

I am not sure the webserver should having the SQL database, which
contains product/inventory and customer private info database, while the
webserver also processes credit cards thru a regular phone line. Hence
I am not sure I can do colocation with the setup.

Thank you for any additional inputs.

I'm using a very similar configuration with an ADSL. It is a 486
DX2-66 with 32M of ram, but I would wager money that a 386 with less
than 8 could do just as good a job. I get transfer rates of roughly
100kBps, the full speed of my ADSL... and still slower than the
slowest CDROM money can buy.

Check your network too. If you are running 10Base2 cable and you've
exceeded the bend radius or similar, you would wind up with some lousy
network performance. Try transferring large files from one system to
the next.

With transfer rates that slow, make absolutely sure there are no
problems with your network configuration on your 486. What kind of
transfer rates does it get when you try to pull files from the
internet on _that_ machine?

Just installed Red Hat 5.2 on pentium 166 64Mb using 3Com Etherlink III
card. Installed fine but when I try telnet/ftp from a workstation on the
net (Win95: telnet/ftp) the connection hangs until it almost (1-5
seconds) times out. Total time before any response is about 60-75
seconds. I tried some other cards (3Com Etherlink II and an SMC
(WD8013EDT compatible) with same results. Funny thing is that you can
hit the apache/web server with no delay/problem. Any ideas???

This sounds like the FAQ - reverse DNS lookup. Define all your hosts in
/etc/hosts and if you are using a resolver make sure its available.

Hope this helps

Is it connected to a hub? Do you have a link light on?
When an ethernet card sends a packet out onto the network it expects to see
its own data on its receive lines. If you are not connected to a hub the
data will not be present on the receive lines.

Just plain wierdness is my naming scheme for Unix boxes

    Tunaboat
    skippy
    gizmo
    flip
    sandwich

My Metaframe cluster servers are named earth, wind, fire, and water.
I started setting those up the day after I saw "The Fifth Element" :-)

NT Boxes are muppets, and the novell guy names his servers after planets
and other celestial type stuff.

Before we started at the company the servers had the ingenious naming
scheme of Company Name, type of OS, number. Ie- HRMNT1. yuck.

You could also use Wyse 50s, VT terminals, even TANDEM terminals if you
go into the terminal's configuration menu and set it to ANSI or TTY. (The
Tandem
6530 is not supported by any UNIX systems unless they are running TN6530 and
connected to a Tandem host.)

This will be insufficient for everything that you may require, but
it should get you an easier start (I hope).

You have the arrogance to suggest that whoever posted a valid question

sure that I too had read one, and also understood the way that *grammar*
works in English language before posting my reply. You presumably are

At one place we used to have "Name the Computer" contests and
give $50 to the winner. We only did it for the larger servers.
Our first RISC machine was named "risque" Everyone enjoyed
the contest and the winner enjoyed the money.

When I too up fly fishing I named a six system cluster after
fish and tackle. Trout, bass, carp, musike were the application
servers. The back end database servers were Fly and Hook.

My personal workstation is *ALWAYS* named smaug. My
second is Nessie.

It means the mounting host originates NFS connections
from ports numbered above 1024. Not that using ports
below 1024 gives any real security anyway.
I get this from a Domain/OS host mounting a Linux export.
You need to use the "insecure" option in /etc/exports
to allow this host to mount the NFS export anyway.
See man 5 exports.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your suggestions etc. Much appreciated.

At the moment I can get Win98 to multilink my two V.90 modems to get a
10k/sec connection with my ISP. It works great but I want to move over
to Linux and this is one thing that's stopping.

My ISP is using some beta patch made available to them by 3com. This
patch on their end supports Win98's Multilink PPP connections. I want
to know if anybody has managed to get Linux to make use of two V.90
modems to get faster downloads.

So far it's been pretty difficult with this EQL thing. I'm a newbie
and want to use Linux. :-)

Thanks and regards,
