Hi all,

I got the following situation and I would like to know how to resolve it

Linux box with 1 ip from Cable provider (came with a domain name like
myhost.cableprovider.com)
but I have also register for another domain name (mydomain.com) and I got a
friend to host it for me which is up and running now
That's mean myhost.cableprovider.com and mydomain.com can both access to my
linux box
by when I join IRC or some other thing
It will display my domain name as myhost.cableprovider.com
Is there a way I can change it my linux box to display as mydomain.com
instead of myhost.cableprovider.com

Please email me back

Thanx

Pat

With only my new experimental Linux server plugged into an ACER SOHO 16-port
hub I see a lot of collisions and overruns when I inspect the interfaces
with ifconfig.

What's going on here? Can anyone explain? The man page offers no explanation
of how these fields get updated.

You don't really need an MX record. It's perfectly reasonable to
send an email adressed to [EMAIL PROTECTED], and
it will get delivered to that computer name. MX records are only
required to associate a domain name with a particular machine.
You can also send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The problems are whether you have a static IP address, whether
you're happy with people emailing you at that weird address,
and whether your provider filters the appropriate packets.

You probably already can send mail directly from your machine.
Sendmail will do this without modification (or maybe a little
bit required) Just make sure the daemon's running. And, when
the daemon is running, mail sent to your computer should
arrive also. Assuming you've got a static IP, and your provider
is allowing those packets through (which they should).
Set the client email programs on your network to use the
linux machine as the gateway.

Something else you might consider - you can put a forward
on your ISP's server to forward emails to your email adress
there, to your server. If they're running a unix, then
just put a .forward file in your home directory with your
new email address in it.

Subject: eth0 and ppp0 networking on same machine
Date: Fri, 20 Aug 1999 06:35:21 GMT

The situation:
1) Linux-Mandrake 6.0
2) Internet access via ppp0 works fine using kppp
3) Internet access via eth0 and default route does not work even if ppp0
is down
4) When pinging router, packets are transmitted (verified by blinking
light on network hub and with ifconfig) but none are received back
5) I've checked over my eth0 configuration dozens of times but still no
go
6) Basic setup for eth0 is this:
   IP address = 192.168.1.10
   Subnet     = 255.255.255.0
Router = 192.168.1.254 (router doing IP masquarading)

What follows below are results of ifconfig and route commands to aid in
troubleshooting.

I'd really appreciate any help in resolving this problem. Thanks very
much
for your time.

Well there isn't log output. The connection just goes dead or limp. i'm using
roadrunner and I don't have a firewall and can renew most of the time... I
know that when I send IGMP packets out, the connection almost immediately
goes dead, not in RH5.0 though. When the connection dies, pump, of course,
can not renew and stops at the end of this dmsg. Don't think it is important
output but, it's all that is slightly rellivant. Setting up and ftp server,
no matter the port, also seems to kill the connection.

I have tried tcpdump and did learn a lot about the cause of the dial up:

tcpdump -i sl0 -w /some/file &

the -i sl0 part will make it only see packet(s) that pass the diald-filter
BEFORE ppp0 is up i.e. those that trigger diald. I let it run 1-2 days
before I kill it.

You read by :
tcpdump -v -r /some/file (port nnn)

This happens after masq and will not give you any info on WHO caused the
trigger.

Well, all things are easier if you get 2 NIC's the same, and PCI rather
than ISA.

Tell us what netstat -r returns on your box. It should look like:

#root: > netstat -r
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags MSS Window irtt Iface
11.11.111.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 1500 0 0 eth0
192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 1500 0 0 eth1
127.0.0.0 * 255.0.0.0 U 3584 0 0 lo

Then try

tail -30 /var/log/messages and look for messages like:

 ... kernel: IP fw-in deny eth0 ...

You have total control over which packet goes throught you firewall. You
maight as well ahve blocked everuthing.

The way I get around this is with another user-account under linux where
the Netscape preferences are not set up to expect anything external.
The news and mail servers are 'localhost'
The home page is either on the local lan or on localhost.
No delay at all then.
Since both providers I use need proxy settings, their netscape
preferences mean that netscape hangs using 100% of the processor.

I'm hoping that somebody's run into a similar situation before...I've
got diald up and running quite well, made a few modifications to the
filters for netbios calls and SSL (to extend their connect time), but
now seem to be having trouble connecting to some websites like Hotmail
and Nasaq.com when I log onto them from one of my (*gasp*) win98

to them...I realize that lynx just transfers text, but I'm generally
connecting late at night (after 11 PM, and there's very little load on
my ISP at that time. If anybody has any ideas, I'd sure thank you for
it! Please write me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a similar setup at home and works perfect with the RedHat 6.0 out of
the box. The only thing that didn't work was de dhcpcd that came with it. It
was impossible to get an ip address from @home with this tool.. It could
work for you but if it doesn't there ar 2 options make the ip static or find
the newer version op dhcpcd..
be sure to get dhcpcd-1_3_17-pl9_tar package!! This did the trick for me. It
instantly provided me with the ip!!

This weekend i will be setting up a site on how to configure a linux box to
access the internet on a cable modem with the @home provider (NL) and how to
configure it as i firewall for an internal lan... (IPMASQ) point your

It runs just nice - nearly.
I'm able to run BASH and then TELNET and login to my server but I
cannot attach/login to my server with LOGIN or XDM.
Where can I configure that the client has to try to log on my server or
where can I specify the IP address where to log on?

I'm joining this thread rather late, but maybe a specific case would help
clarify the issue...

My Windows PC is named RCLARK. On my Linux box, my username is rclark, and
my home directory is /home/rclark. Since [homes] in enabled in my smb.conf,
when I look at the Linux share in the Network Neighborhood, I see a folder
called Rclark [strange capitalization courtesy of Windows]. My SMB
password is the same as my Linux login password.

Mine is a plain vanilla setup: one that Samba is prepared to handle by
default. :)

However, if there is something not plain vanilla about the username, home
directory, or password, this throws a monkey wrench in the works. One
possibility is that your {Username} folder should not be /home/username, but
/???/home/username on the Linux machine. If so, you need to tell Samba by
manually editing smb.conf or using the SWAT tool.

Also, in your samba directory on the Linux machine, in the var subdirectory,
there should be a log.smb which could help diagnose the config problem...

Hope this helps,

Douglas Radmacher spoke these words of wisdom:

: As you can see the checksum didn't change. If I wait for a period of

Hi,

I read in an answer to a similar post that nfs does not require
clients to check its cache every time a file is accessed but
only every 30 seconds or so, so this behaviour is to be
expected.

Bye,
Mike

You need to add the word "nameserver" infront of the listing for your DNS
Servere in the /etc/resolv.conf for the DNS lookup to work properly. In the
etc/hosts file, you need to change the line that has hosts to
hosts: files dns
You also need to add the file defaultrouter to the /etc/ directory and just
put in the gateway's IP address.
to check on the fly if you can reach your gateway, type in the following:

# route add default my.gateway.ip.address

This will do a 1 time gateway addition so that you can test out the setting.
If the route add default ... line does not work, then probably either your
subnet mask is improperly set up or your NIC is not setup / working
properly.
