Carl,
Your description of the drives and their lettering is a
little confusing. You mention

Not sure what your saying here part 1 is C, part 2 should be D
and 3 E so what's ment by "the other two being C and D" is vague.

I'm installing RH 5.2 to the 4.3 (though I

I can't place where you are in the install process by the
description above. Is this where you are doing the partitoning
of the the drive during the install process? If so then it looks
like you think your working with hda and should be targeting hdb,
c or d depending on how your have partitoned your drives. During
the install Druid should show you a list of drives it sees and
when you select a name at the top then in middle it will offer
you a drive selection which you can select with an asterisk. I
think you should be targeting hdb - the second drive (the 4.3)
off the primary controller.

It appears that your upstream ISP has allocated you a 14-host CIDR-block:
network: 194.97.200.160
netmask: 255.255.255.240
brdcast: 194.97.200.175
valid addresses: 194.97.200.161 - 194.97.200.174

NOTE: If I have surmised correctly, you should not be using 175!!!

So, you can do one of four things:
(1) Use NAT (network address translation)
(2) Use IP Masquerade. (similar to NAT but uses only one IP address)
(3) Set up static routes on the router and the linux box. (see below)
(4) Set up your linux box as a bridge rather than a router. (see below)

You need to set up static routes on the router as follow (assuming Cisco
syntax):
route add 194.97.200.162 255.255.255.240 194.97.200.169
route add 194.97.200.163 255.255.255.240 194.97.200.169
route add 194.97.200.164 255.255.255.240 194.97.200.169
route add 194.97.200.165 255.255.255.240 194.97.200.169
route add 194.97.200.166 255.255.255.240 194.97.200.169
route add 194.97.200.167 255.255.255.240 194.97.200.169
route add 194.97.200.168 255.255.255.240 194.97.200.169
route add 194.97.200.170 255.255.255.240 194.97.200.169
route add 194.97.200.172 255.255.255.240 194.97.200.169
route add 194.97.200.173 255.255.255.240 194.97.200.169
route add 194.97.200.174 255.255.255.240 194.97.200.169

And on the firewall:
route add host 194.97.200.169 mask 255.255.255.240 dev eth0
route add host 194.97.200.168 mask 255.255.255.240 dev eth1

route add host 194.97.200.161 mask 255.255.255.240 gw 194.97.200.169

route add host 194.97.200.162 mask 255.255.255.240 gw 194.97.200.168
route add host 194.97.200.163 mask 255.255.255.240 gw 194.97.200.168
route add host 194.97.200.164 mask 255.255.255.240 gw 194.97.200.168
route add host 194.97.200.165 mask 255.255.255.240 gw 194.97.200.168
route add host 194.97.200.166 mask 255.255.255.240 gw 194.97.200.168
route add host 194.97.200.167 mask 255.255.255.240 gw 194.97.200.168
route add host 194.97.200.168 mask 255.255.255.240 gw 194.97.200.168
route add host 194.97.200.170 mask 255.255.255.240 gw 194.97.200.168
route add host 194.97.200.172 mask 255.255.255.240 gw 194.97.200.168
route add host 194.97.200.173 mask 255.255.255.240 gw 194.97.200.168
route add host 194.97.200.174 mask 255.255.255.240 gw 194.97.200.168

Ugly! I really recommend using NAT (network address translation) or IP
Masquerade. Check out the Masquerade HOWTO, part of the Linux
Documentation Project. Also check out the Firewall+Bridge HOWTO.

Try using this compile statement:

gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall
-Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c tulip.c `[ -f
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] && echo -DMODVERSIONS`

then run depmod -a ...it should work fine this time. Also, for the
latest tulip.o driver update, go to:

Ok, there are 3 partitions on this internal drive. The first is set up by
Compaq to use their Setup and diagnostic utils. This partition is not
accessible outside of hitting F10 at boot time to go to the setup (like the
bios on most PC's). The other 2 partitions are the normal C & D partitions.
Both FAT16.

Ok. It's the part (late in the process) where the RH installer asks "Where's
RedHat/RPMS and RedHat/base." All the partitioning (using FDisk BTW) has all
been done on /dev/hdb.

I've tried these setups:

c:\RedHat (ie: straight off the root)
c:\rh52\Redhat
d:\RedHat
D:\rh52\RedHat

The installer scans the dir, and then gives the error. I KNOW I'm specifying
the directory correctly, cuz if I don't, the installer tells me the RedHat
install tree is not on that device.

have you checked to see if the location for ftpd in inetd.conf exists??
I had this problem when seting up my RedHat5.0 machine (ftpd not

Greetings:

I'm a networking newbie myself (went out and puchased 3 NICs 3 days
ago) so take this for what it's worth.

I struggled with the same problem (or at least the same symptom) and
finally got things working. In my case I had the NIC's on the Linux
box set in Full Duplex mode. I changed them to half-duplex and
everything started working flawlessly.

In my particular case I'm using 10Mbps PnP NICs that came with a
floppy with a config program for setting the io, irq, duplex, etc. I
just boot from a win disk, run the program off the setup disk, and
all's set. Miraculously, booting from a Win95 startup disk didn't
break my LILO config but you should probably make sure you have a
linux bootable disk handy if you do this.

Hope this helps!

Subject: Re: HELP! - sendmail hangs
Date: 25 Feb 1999 19:56:23 GMT

Erik,

thank you for your assistance. your message seems to indicate that my
sendmail issue is directly related to my other networking problems. i
am trying to connect my linux server to my windows network, which
includes an NT3.51 server and 9x/NT4 workstations. i am not
particularly network savvy, and i've been having some difficulties.

you are correct. i did specify a name server in /etc/resolv.conf. my
NT3.51 server (static ip address 192.168.34.1) is the WINS and DHCP
server for my network. when booting up my linux server, it is
dynamically assigned an available ip address by my NT server. i can
confirm this with the ifconfig command.

this is where the fun starts. curiously, the ip address displayed by
ifconfig does NOT match the ip address in the WINS database on my NT
server. furthermore, the hostname -v command at the linux box displays
"WHL_NT1," instead of "WHL31," which is the host name i specified in
linuxconf/basic host information. also, the command prompt appears as
[user@WHL_NT1 /], but at one time it did appear as [user@WHL31 /].
conversely, the linux machine appears in the workstation network
neighborhood as "WHL31." weird, isn't it?

i believe this may also be related. when starting the httpd daemon, i
receive the following error messages:

http: cannot determine local host name
Use the ServerName directive to set it manually.

i'm missing something somewhere, but i'm running out of ideas. i don't
think it is a samba issue though. what do you think?

thank you again for you time. i really appreciate it.

regards,
michel

All,

As we investigate how to dump Notes for e-mail, keeping it to share

Any good server available for Linux?

just type:
biff n
in each terminal that you do not want to be notified in, or put biff n
in you shell rc script, for bash: .bash_profile or .bashrc and then
type in:
biff y
in the terminal that you do want to be notified in.
Since .bash_profile is only executed by interactive logins I put the
following in it:
numlogins=`who |
egrep "$LOGNAME" |
wc -l`
case $numlogins in
 *"0"*|*"1"*)
;;
*) echo "login number $numlogins for $LOGNAME, messages and biff off";
mesg n;biff n
;;
esac

this turnes both email notification and messages off for all but my
first login. This can not be in .bashrc or any rc file that is read
by non interactive logins. ie scp will no longer be able to transfer
files if this is in .bashrc

Hi,

I am new with Linux networking, so my question may sound very basic.

I checked with my future cable modem provider (I mean the cable company,

which is MediaOne, if this makes any difference) and they suggest the

3Com Etherlink III as the preferable NIC card. Ofcourse, they have a Win

enviroment in mind. I was wondering, if the NIC that they suggest is

compatible with Linux ver. 5.0 which I have, or should I buy another one.

A relative question is the following. I will use my PC in order to connect

to some university Unix servers and do some file postprocessing there. I was

wondering, if I could get the graphical output of the postprocessing displayed

in my home PC monitor and how should I go about doing that since the ISPs do not

give you a static IP adress. I am also worried whether the speed is going

to be high enough so that I can have the output fast on my screen. If anybody

has had any experience with this or any of the above questions, I would appreciate

a reply.

Thank you.

It is possible to have just one ip and more than one web server, the only
problem is that they will use different ip ports. The util you would use
is ipfwadm (for 2.0.X kernels) or ipchains (for 2.1.X or 2.2.X kernels).
Sorry to say, I am still trying to finish that project my self, so I can't
give you definate answers. But for more info, look @
