The problem is solved:

Christian Murphy wrote:

SIGPIPE, it will kill your process.

Catch or ignore SIGPIPE. Then you'll get your -1 return code and
EPIPE in errno.

And that's it!!! So simple :(
Again, Thank you...

Pine uses a standard format doesn't it? It's quite a simple one, all the
messages are just joined together! Perhaps a simple filtering script before you
run each client (!)

Hmmm...Pine perhaps?

Pine 4.x highlights URLs so you can just hit return. I've got it setup to
run Lynx, and it works fine. It also understands some simple HTML like <B>
and <U>.

As for the GUI client, Pine 4 works well in X except you can either have
integration with the mouse or selection (like in an xterm) but not both
AFAIK.

Of course, you don't get any prettiness, but maybe it's a start to
developing a minamalist philosophy?

Subject: TX packet loss with PPP (2.2 series kernel)
Date: 25 Feb 1999 11:56:23 GMT

Hello World:

I recently upgraded from Linux kernel v.2.0.34 (Slackware 3.5
distribution) to v.2.2.0. PPP (v.2.3.5) is included as a module
(whereas it was previously part of the 2.0.34 kernel). PPP
functioned perfectly with v.2.0.34, but now there is
the following interaction of PPP with the new kernel
(everything else is the same):

(2) According to <ifconfig> there is now total TX packet loss for both
loopback and ppp0, eg

        lo......TX packets:0 errors: 1260 dropped: 18 ...
        ppp0....TX packets:0 errors: 495 dropped:15 ...

But since the ppp connection seems to be up and running OK
the packet loss may be more apparent than real? There is no
recorded loss under the 2.0.34 kernel.

What is the origin of the TX packet loss message?
Is it significant (ie real)? and how do I fix it?

(2) According to <ifconfig> the PPP0 netmask is now set at
255.255.255.255 whereas with the old kernel it was 255.255.0.0.
I have a dynamic IP connection.

Why is the net mask changed? Is there a connection with (1)?

(3) As a footnote, in /var/adm/messages I get
.....
Feb 25 22:16:41 Hero pppd [232]: local IP addr 131.203.4.154
Feb 25 22:16:41 Hero pppd [232]: remote IP addr 131.203.20.1
Feb 25 22:16:41 Hero modprobe: can't locate module ^Pr

I don't know what the last line means, or whether it has anything
to do with the other symptoms....

Any comments/suggestions on the above will be gratefully
acknowledged,

Roger Young.

I have made sure that name resoultion is possible with this host, and

Actually I have a new 3Com/USR Courier V.90 external modem that also
will talk to a DTE at 230400bps. That's what I used to make sure that
I was actually talking 230400 through my serial port. If you do an &w
followed by an i7 you will see the DTE speed that the modem is talking
to the serial port at.

It seems to do AT commands just fine at 230400 as does the Eicon Diva T/A.

1. Install Linux - most distributions have STABLE and POWERFUL mail server
whose name is 'sendmail'.

2. Edit /etc/sendmail.conf for your system. Mostly, you have to edit 0 line
for sending, just 1 line for simple mail receiving.

->  Refer to 'man sendmail'

Subject: two ethernet cards

Hi,

I am trying to configure two ethernet cards on a Slackware linux
computer using kernel support for ne2000. The first card is located at
0x300 IRQ 5, the second at 0x320 IRQ 9. I added:

append="ether=5,0x300,eth0 ether=9,0x320,eth1"

to my lilo.conf

The machine boots and picks up eth0 and that card is working fine. The
problem is that eth1 is not recognized at all. There are no failure
messages in any of the logs. I'm fairly certain that I don't have a
hardware conflict. This computer is a single boot linux configuration.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks, Jeff.

My setup: 386/8mb/2 isa ne2000 clones/no hard drive. Running Linux
Router Project (http://www.linuxrouter.org). Fast. Extremely. :)
Seriously, not a single moving part in the 386 (no powersupply fan
required, since the load on the powersupply is so low). Anyhow, I
regularly get 200k - 2mb thru my cablemodem thru that 386. I do it
on win98, and Mandrake <erm, latest version, can't remember what
version it is..:) (Mandrake is rh5.2 + kde).

Just yesterday I downloaded StarOffice, all 70mbs, in a few minutes
worth of ftp. I averaged 300k on that one. Downloaded wp8, took
forever from a slow site at about 40k... :)

It's definately not a matter of the performance of the 486. Maybe
there's a problem in the setup, or in your cabling, or soemthing
like that.
