Look at the man page for smbpasswd. You have to have it setup.
You
have to match encryption types also which you can do in smb.conf.

Do a man on smbpasswd and it will tell you how to create a user, and
add it to the smbpasswd file. Also, make sure you have sercurity =
user, and encrypt password = yes, in your smb.conf file,

Darren

P133, 64MB/3GB
Caldera OpenLinuxLite

When I try to make a ppp connection using pppd
the chat script works, I get connected, /var/log/messages
shows all the expected things from the modem
it bails, leaving the following in /var/log/messages:

   pppd[274]: Serial connection established.
   pppd[274]: ioctl(PPPIOCGUNIT): Operation not permitted
   pppd[274]: ioctl(PPPIOCGDEBUG): Operation not permitted
   pppd[274]: Exit.

This started after I rebuilt the kernel, but persists even when I
use the old kernel.

I don't know where to go from here.

Ideas? Questions? Arrugh?

Not sure which boxes your goin between when this happens. Is
your hosts file setup? Do you have any irq confilcts? Is any one
hogging time or just a program stuck - monitor with
top - see how busy the system is when this happens - xosview etc.

isn't it as simple as making appropriate
entries in /etc/hosts?

A line like bill.foo.ude.cat 10.1.1.1 would make all traffic passing
the gateway get routed to the right box instead.

Of course it can't work outside the net because
of the private (unknown) domain, but inside, unknown
traffic should be sent to the default route.

That means you must set up all the local hosts to look at
the DNS on the local net first.

(in Win95, mark USE DNS, then add your
local DNS, followed by the external DNS.)

I hoe this isn't completely useless advice.

trying for quite some time to get the PPP working. I can successfully dial
into my ISP, and log in with a terminal window via KPPP in X, but as soon as
it tries to start the PPPD, it inevitably will "unexpected quit"
immediately. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks :-)

First, a gentle hand slap for the benefit of all the lurkers.

NEVER post anything with a subject like that!

The best thing about news is that one answer solves a
dozen peoples issues. If you are looking for an
answer, look at the subjects for help.

Your subject should have been
   Automatic network configuration
or something similarly useful.

Ok, back on topic.

Windows has to have several things set up to do network
connections. It has to know where to find its own IP address,
it has to know where to find name servers, and it has to know
what kind of interface it is using.

When you connect to the school net, what do you do?
You could plug in an Ethernet cable, or you could dial
up on the telephone. There are other possibilities,
but these are the most likely.

I have a machine running kernel 2.2.2 on which I've recently upgraded many
of the daemons and utilities. icmpinfo reports that something on my
localhost keeps trying to connect to port 111 (the rpc portmapper).
However, since I don't have this enabled, whatever task is doing this just
keeps trying. Can someone suggest how I can find out which system task is
doing this so that I can stop it? I don't want to enable the portmapper
on this particular machine.

Thanks,

Dan

Well -
Getting Linux to work properly on my Compaq LTE Elite 4/75CX laptop is very
difficult. My NIC is the Xircom CE3 10/100. RH5.1 and RH5.2 will
initialize the card properly (with the xirc2ps_cs module) during install,
but they cannot seem to read the RPMs (via NFS, FTP, or Samba) from the hard
drive another Linux box. I have also been working with minimal Linuxes like
tomsrtbt, pocket linux, etc. and they don't support the Xircom CE3 card.
What I am looking for is a good base Linux with good PCMCIA support to get a
rudimentary system booting from the box . What should I do???

You will never "ensure that the page ends up looking exactly
how you intended it to" because HTML isn't a layout language.
Although most 'web designers' seem to think that.

Duane,
No real help BUT. Did the dial in script/scripts get modified
in some way to trigger a
different set of ioctl calls? You might go back through whatever
Caldera uses
for ppp dial in and see if any have been modified inadvertantly.
It looks like,
for the debug, its at a point were it would set the debug level -
has the level
changed? There are some printk's in that area so may be if you
turn up the
debug messges in the kernel you'll get a more informative
message.

winproxy or something like that. i have win 95/98 on the pent 1 and win 98/nt

loss using the old 486 should i use the faster pentium, what nic should i go
with, i have 10/100's in the pent and pent 2. does the nic make any diffrence?
my isp mediaone uses dhcp(or something like that)dynamic) to give me my IP is
that going to cause problems? what are linuxs minimum requirements,(for this) i

Hi all,
I have problems trying to set up diald.
Originally I tried to set up ppp-on with and
ppp-on-dialer
I kept getting
' Host is currently Unavailable '
Someone suggested I try pppsetup to get on line. This worked
brilliantly

Now I am trying to get diald working and get the same
problem

James Carlson suggested I turn on debug

It was enabled in pppd options but not in syslog.conf.

Now I have done that I see that it does log me on
then I get the remote IP address sent followed by
my dynamic local IP address. These come from one of
their 2 DHCP Servers and are in the same ranges as I
get from running ppp-go.

After that syslog shows lines like

pppd {2786]:rcvd [CCP ConfReq id=0x1 < 11 05 00 04 > < 12
06 00 00 00 01 >]

pppd {2786]:sent [CCP ConfReq id=0x1 ]

pppd {2786]:rcvd [CCP ConfRej id=0x1 < 11 05 00 04 > < 12
06 00 00 00 01 >]

pppd {2786]:sent [CCP ConfReq id=0x1 ]

last message repeated 2 times

pppd [2786]: rcvd TermReq id=0x0
pppd [2786]: rcvd TermAck id=0x0
pppd [2786]: sent ConfReq id=0x1
pppd [2786]: rcvd TermReq id=0x0
pppd [2786]: rcvd TermAck id=0x0
pppd [2786]: sent ConfReq id=0x1
pppd [2786]: rcvd TermReq id=0x0
pppd [2786]: rcvd TermAck id=0x0
pppd [2786]: sent ConfReq id=0x1
pppd [2786]: rcvd TermReq id=0x0
pppd [2786]: rcvd TermAck id=0x0
pppd [2786]: sent ConfReq id=0x1
pppd [2786]: rcvd TermReq id=0x0
pppd [2786]: rcvd TermAck id=0x0
pppd [2786]: sent ConfReq id=0x1

The above last three lines seem to be
repeated over and over until I kill diald.

I can see nothing extra to give me any clues in
/var/log/messages
/usr/adm/syslog
/usr/adm/messages
/usr/adm/debug

I end up with no connection.

I can run ppp-go straight before or after and it connects
every time.

Hope you now know what's wrong. I certainly don't.
Thanks,
norm

Seems your Makefile is from ypserv 1.1.x or earlier. Newer ypserv versions
caches the file handles, so you need to call makedbm -c. The right
Makefile does this.

Linux is like a Vorlon. It is incredibly powerful, gives terse,
cryptic answers and has a lot of things going on in the background.

Use x3270. It works better than the Netscape 3270 emulator
and should come with just about any flavor of Linux.

Preferably with the Deception Tool Kit running on a bunch
of other ports to hide the pinhole (http://all.net/dtk/dtk.html)
or have a DTK script on a certain port which recognizes a
password and opens a pinhole only to your IP address.

Better yet, use SSH to make a secure telnet connection.

Help!!!!!

I've got a laptop with a PCMCIA network adapter.
DE-660 by DLINK.
Running RedHat 5.2 (2.0.36 kernel)

I had some problems recently, then got the card working for one
day, even through a few reboots, after I installed PCMCIA Services 3.0.9

Now, EVERY TIME I start the machine I get:

     pcnet_reset_8390()  did not complete
     timeout waiting for Tx RDC.

This happens after:

      insmod /lib/modules/preferred/net/8390.o
      insmod ........./pcnet_cs.o

This thing works perfectly fine under Windows 98, but I DON'T want
to go there today!

I've even tried re-installing Linux... No success.
I've now tried PCMCIA Service 3.05 and 3.09.

HELP!!!!!

    Did you try netcfg?

This should work!
