Subject: NFS and slooooww Netscape in RH5.2??
Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 16:35:28 GMT

I'm trying to setup some diskless workstations -- so I've got /usr and /opt
and /home/joeuser mounting by NFS. Everything seems to work quite well --
expect for Netscape. It takes just forever and a day to load (at least a
couple minutes) and another minute to find and load the homepage. Other apps,
like WP7, which ain't exactly tiny, load quite quickly, and they're in the
same /opt that Netscape is. The /home directory is on a different server
than the boot server -- the users home directories are on the NIS server. Is
this what is causing the slowness? I don't think so, because if I log in as
root on the workstation and start Netscape, it's just as slow, and root, of
course, has it's home dir on the workstation itself, and so far I just have /
on the local hardrive, not mounted by NFS. This slowness is so bad as to
make this whole idea unworkable, no one would tolerate a system this slow.
Any ideas? I've got rsize=8192.

Subject: Routing ppp0 (null-modem) to local net
Date: 28 Feb 1999 15:51:05 +0000

Hi,

I'm having some difficulty connecting my laptop to the local net via ppp.

                             - terminal
                             | |
laptop  <--- ppp --->   box  --- ether  ----------|
                                                |
                                             Windowze box

Box, windowze box and terminal are fine.

For the ppp I do:
laptop: pppd -detach crtscts lock defaultroute 192.168.1.2:192.168.0.128
/dev/modem 38500 &

box: pppd -detach crtscts lock proxyarp 192.168.0.128:192.168.1.2
/dev/modem 38500 &

Redhat 5.1 with out of the box kernel (symbols ip_forward* are in the kernel)

I have tried a variety of things such as adding a manual arp entry in box
and choosing the ip of the ether device for the box side of the ppp.

Can anyone hold my hand here because I am a bit lost. Is there anything
wrong with that Redhat dist, because I have a similar system working with a
connection via modem to an ISP and with callback for home on a slackware
system?

GJ.

You must configure proxy server to accept "clear text" authentication. The
default is NT encrypted authentication, which (obviously), Netscape does not
support.

Who knows what kind of ethernet card would fit in an
IBM ps/2 386 PC.
I was just trying to put an MCA card in it but that doesn't really
fit...
This machine has no ISA, PCI, VLB or any other common bus type.
Of course the card has to be supported by linux (suse6.0)

Subject: Using XDM inside VNC
Date: Sun, 28 Feb 1999 15:53:56 GMT

I'd like to have VNC services running on my home Linux box at boot-up. When
accessing the VNC server, I'd like to be presented with an XDM login screen,
to allow my to select which user to be. I'll typically be accessing my Linux
box from my win98 PC.

At this time, I've added VNC server to init.d at runlevel three.
Unfortunately, it always runs as root. How do I use XDM to allow remote
access by users?

Any thoughts?

Subject: TELES16.3 PNP I'm on my end and need help
Date: Mon, 1 Mar 1999 15:58:15 +0100

Hey I need realy help, I'm on the edge to madness.

7 weeks ago I started my adventure with LINUX SusE 6.0 distribution kernel
version 2.0.36.
Installation, configuration of Linux base and X-Server, compilation of a new
kernel etc. all works fine
and I learned a lot of LINUX during this time. Also I learnd to love LINUX
(all this to free me
of this bugy MICROSOFT toys).

But since I try to configure a ISDN connection I'm near to believe that no
operating system developer
in the whole big world realy want to develop a easy to use, bug free
operating system. (Or is there any outside??)

With your help, I hope I will get back this enthusiastic feeling about LINUX
I had had when I once start
with LINUX.

My environment:
Pentium II Celeron 330 MHz, 64Mb, ISA and PCI slots 2xCOM (COM1 is used
by a modem)
ATI 3D RAGE IIC AGB graphiccard
AdvanSys PCI SCSI-Controller using Interrupt 10
Realtek RTL8029 PCI Ethernet adapter using I=11
Aztech 2620 ISA PNP Soundcard using I=5 and I=9
     **** TELES 16.3 PNP ISA adapter (no 16.3c) *******

ISDN adapter is directly connected to the S0 bus.

I followed the ISAPNP documents, search in the appropriate Internet
homepages
and had part success after two endless weekends.
With ISAPNP I found one and only one Interupt and E/A combination with what
the driver
was loaded at least.
Here the settings of "isapnp.conf" with what I got the driver loaded.

No connection seems to be established or??

So I looked through i4l_FAQ and found a hint to test the ISDN setting and I
followed the propsal.
Proposal: Try to phone the ISDN No. what you have configured to use with
the PC ISDN card.
Then you should see any messages in the
/var/log/messages about the attempt to dial in.
So I phoned the no what I configured in the "/etc/isdn/isdn.conf" and also
in the ISDN settings of YAST.
but there appears no message in the message file about any dialin attempt.

p.s. in the isdn.conf file I also configured to use a isdn logfile
/etc/isdn/logfile,
but no logfile was created until now.

By the way I also tested a Dr. Neuhaus Niccy 1016 PC (what is according to
i4l-FAQ a TELES 16.0) without
success.

So what does this mean, am I stupid, shell I use a bit "C4" to blow up the
TELES cards, computer or even me????

To simplify life, use only IP address numbers for testing, not names.

Because your machines communicate OK linux-to-linux, leave Node 1
alone and only adjust Windows on Node 2. All of the settings you must
adjust are found in ControlPanel/Network

Did you specify to Windows your IP address and subnet mask? In
ControlPanel/Network there is a . list of "components."
Select/highlight the one labeled "TCP/IP." If there are more than one
of them, select the one that mentions Node 2's ethernet card.
Double-click on it or press the Properties button. You get a dialog
box with 6 tabs. Choose the one that says "IP Address." Choose
"Specify an IP Address" and enter your address and mask. Reboot and
try to ping again.

After following the PPP instruction and ISDN dialup instruction I tried to

But in the /var/log/messages I only saw.

No connection seems to be established or??

So I looked through i4l_FAQ and found a hint to test the ISDN setting and I
followed the propsal.

Proposal: Try to phone the ISDN No. what you have configured to use with the
PC ISDN card.
Then you should see any messages in the /var/log/messages about the attempt
to dial in.

Regards and thanx 4 help

Andy

Hi!

This looks like in interrupt problem. irq 4 and irq 3 are used vor
com1 and com2. If you want to use one of these interrupts for
something else you should disable the comport in the bios setup first.
Does your soundcard really need two irqs? One of them is for the ide
channel on the soundcard (i guess), you need that?

bye, harald

P.S.: de.alt.comm.isdn4linux is a good newsgroup for your question.

Subject: WinNT4 and Linux/Firewall Problem

Hello,

I've got a linux-box (SuSE 6.0) configured as a firewall to establish
internet-connection for my windows NT 4.0 (ServicePack 4) clients.
Everything seems to work find, but whenever a NT-box is switched on the
firewall tries to connect to my ISP's (T-Online) nameserver. Additionally
the clients try the same nameserver-connect every two hours (not exactly 2
hours, but nearly). I deactivated every service of the NT-client but the
connect kept staying.

What is the reason for these behavior and what can I do to get rid of it ?

Thanks for your interest in my problem

Heiko

I have a similiar question as I have the same DFE-530TX ethernet card.
I downloaded the via-rhine.c and compiled it to via-rhine.o and put it
in its directory with the other modules as specified in the document
Using Linux Network Device Drivers as Modules. I did an insmod
via-rhine, but linux still comes up with Eth0 unknown device. Any
help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
            Roger

They are probably just little hacks that do not know anything. They are
running some cheese telnet login deamon (I have seen many) and then your
system kicks them off after a few attempts and then they think that
their software sucks or something (I would not know about failed
attempts ;-). If you are worried just ad the ips to your
/etc/hosts.deny list or turn off telnet all together in the
/etc/inetd.conf file.
