Don't know if this is the right newsgroup, but here goes:
I am trying to set up my machine with Apache so I can try out some CGI
scripts locally before putting them on my ISP website. I got it up and
running without complaint, but when I put the URL http://frank/ into Netscape
(my machine is called frank) I get "cannot access server
keyword.netscape.com". What is going on here? Have I screwed up some
network settings somewhere or what?
I am using Red Hat 5.0 with the Apache that comes with that (sorry don't have
the version) and Netscape 4.5.
Thanks
Chris

The RealAudio server 5.0 that comes with Red Hat Linux 5.1
works fine with RealPlayer G2 clients on Windows for me.
The Windows Media Player 6 plays RealAudio sources fine
for me.
Yet the Windows Media Player cannot open the sample RealAudio
sources provided by the Linux pnserver. But it works fine if
you open the same sample .ra files locally.
What gives ?

IMO this has nothing got to do with the SCSI controler. We had the same
problem here in our network. We wanted to set up a 100Mbit backbone but
the cards didn't work properly. Changing the runlevel to 1 and then back
to 2 did the trick for us (instead of rebooting).
The whole mess results from buggy drivers for the rtl8139. They should
be more stable in 2.0.36 kernels but we replaced them all with 3com
cards and are lucky now.

For the Mac there is a shareware called Dave that
turns it into a windows file server (so Dave is for
the Mac what Samba is for Linux).

Try going to RH site, and download the boot and root image that is compatable
for that controller. That's what I had to do.

Jean-Reginald,
You can build a release with tcpip and maquerading. There are
HOWTO's for this. NET-3-HOWTO, Installion-HOWTO, Config-HOWTO
and others which are very good. When you do an install you'll
get all the doc.
If your not going onto the net then you can use 192.168.1.n
for your internet addresses. You just pick what you want but
192.168 is for off-line networks. There are classes of networks
A,B,C,D that relate to the number of ip addresses bases on the
network numbers - see doc for details. Your's will be a class C
so 192.168.1 is your network part and 1 is your local part. The
netmask is 255.255.255.0 255.255.255 fixes the network part and
does not change and defines the net. That gives you 254 numbers
to use for local computer addresses. For example 192.168.1.1 is
your Linux box, 192.168.1.2 is your 98 box etc, 192.168.1.n for
any new boxes. The NET howto has an explination of the above.
Broadcast addresses are set by the system and just happen without
your intervention but are also explained in the howto.
If you want to get on the network you would use PPP (easy) and
with IP-Masquerading you could have the 98 machine on the network
through the linux box. Both are fairly simple to setup.
On the 98 side you have to select tcpip through the network
neighborhood. For the most part you do not setup a client tcpip
on 98 and a server tcpip on the linux side. They take care of
that and understand who is client or master at any point.
The best starting place is some initial reading with the
howto's. Get them from one of the linux mirrors or search for
them. Read the one's I've mentioned. Also if you do not have a
linux release at the moment you might want to try RH 5.2 as its a
good release for persons new to Linux. The linux administrator
guide has a good section on networking.

I have an older p166 with RH 5.2
Installed are two nics ( 1 Netgear PCI and 1 3com 3c509 isa. ) Due to the
hardware configuration ( scsi, etc ) the netgear nic works like a champ but
the 3com will not activate. I have the 3com set on IO:210 IRQ 3. I know
this should conflict with the serial. But I have no modem and disabled at
the BIOS the serial ports.
This config works fine for Win95 Osr but not for linux. In RH I have setup the
card under the kernal tool and it appears under the network management tool.
However, I can not activate it, nor does it appear in the boot messages.
Please any suggestions. Is there some default in the RH kernel for serial
ports at IRQ 3/5 that is blocking the card? What else could I try, I have no
other available ports.
Worst case I will just put the proxy server under Win95 and scrubb
linux....which hurts to say, but hey I have to have this thing working!!!
Please provide feedback to either comp.os.linux.networking or jlangdonh@my-

I'm setting up some diskless workstations, and at this point have /usr and
/opt mounted by NFS. The root directory is still local, until I get the final
configuration figured out. One problem is that Netscape is just incredibly
slow. Like about two minutes to start up, another minute at least to find
it's home page and open Messenger. I've got /usr and /opt exported from the
boot server, while /home/ with the user's home directories is exported from
the NIS server. I've got rsize-8192, wsize=8192 on all these. Any ideas?
