First of all, sorry for cross posting this. I was not sure which
newsgroups
was the correct one.
Here's the situation:
We have 3 segments to our network:
172.16.0.0, 172.20.0.0, 172.21.0.0
We would like to create 2 internal DNS servers for all our internal
addresses. These DNS servers will have a secondary DNS which points to
our
internet gateway.
We have 2 linux boxes (redhat 5.2 - 2.0.36 kernel). Both are setup as
DHCP
servers for 2 of our 3 segments (we'll add a 3rd linux box for that
segment
in the future).
We have about 100 static IP addresses (servers, routers, hubs,
workstations). We would like to keep the hosts files on the local DNS
servers so that all the workstations, etc., don't have to have a copy
for the
hosts file.
With that in mind, how do I configure DNS. I was reading the HOWTO's
for
DNS (named), but all them show configurations for 'cache only' DNS. We
need
to create a private DNS as well.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe you're using a proxy on one machine, and not on the Linux machine.

You need to make sure that there's a service running on port 80 of the
end IP address. Also, make sure you chose the right IP - the IP is as
important as the port.

I do lack know how however, about the proxy features linux has. Could

there is no problem for that :
smbmount //nt-server/ressource /mountpoint -D Domain/Workgroup -U user
example to mount the ressource 'RESSOURCE' of the NT-Server 'TEST' in NT-Domain
'DOMAIN' with User 'Administrator' declared in the Domain :
smbmount //TEST/RESSOURCE /mnt -D DOMAIN -U Administrator
you will be prompted for the DOMAIN/Administrator user password

I don't believe that's the case, but your suggestion reminded me of something
I read somewhere... and then I found the DNS howto. I'm going to try setting
up a caching only nameserver to see if it helps.
That wouldn't solve the problem of slow/stalling ftp dls, though. Any more
ideas?

Kernel 2.2 automatically creates routes that are implied by ifconfig
without an explicit "route add".
Accordingly the ability for "route add" to automatically infer the
values of missing arguments has been removed. The rationale is that
if the arguments can be inferred the whole command is redundant
anyhow.
> SIOCADDRT No such device
>
> Needless to say my dialup access to my ISV also doesn't work.
This is not "needless to say", and quite possibly, not related.
Are all your packages (especially pppd) upto the versions indicated in
the 2.2.1 release notes (Documentation/Changes)?
> Something is not kosher in my new kernel, but what? I have tried all
> reasonable combinations of parameters that I can think of.
You have to spell it out:
route add -host 127.0.0.1 dev lo
Or more correctly:
route add -net 127.0.0.0 netmask 255.0.0.0 dev lo
Alternatively do nothing - the ifconfig command has already created
the correct route.
If you do add it again it'll appear twice in your routing table.
This is because manually added routes have a different priority (aka
"class") from those created by ifconfig but the standard "route"
command does not display this column of the routing table.

Shoulb be not problem. One warning Linux puts only gateway addresses
in the gateway column of the routing table. This can confusr people
who come from a BSD bachground and expect to see local interfaces
addresses in the gateway column of non-gateway routes.

You'll have to define what you want to do more precisesly than that.
You post as written ammounts to: "can someone write a generic tutorial
on Internet Protocols just for me".
Consider getting the HOWTOs, or the Linux NAG, or perhaps another book
on IP.

I wish I had your luck. I have the ip_masq_raudio mod runnung (gets loaded on
boot up...right after the firewall rules are configured etc), but I still cant
stream realaudio/video. The player doesnt even give the 'Connecting to server'
message, it just sits there.
Any ideas? My machine (192.168.60.71 - RH 5.2) is sitting behind a RH5.0
firewall (192.168.60.69 - both running kernel 2.0.36). the only thing I could
come up with using my limited experience and feeble mind is that there's an
issue with forwarding the appropriate port (?).
Any/all input will be greatly apprecited.

A lot of network cards, especially older ones, require you to manually
select which cable it is going to use. I have one with a dip switch on
it, and a few that you have to set in the same software as you set the
IO and IRQ settings. If that was the problem, that may do the trick :)

I am a newbie with netatalk and I haven't it up running yet, but what I
know is that on the Mac side, LocalTalk/AppleTalk (I believe this only
applies to LocalTalk) is set to 'load only when needed' in the AppleTalk

have my mac at my side) and change this option and it *should* be faster.
