Jerry, It may be a good modem, but I can't get it to work! If you have one
running with Linux, can you tell me what AT commands you use, and what your
options file looks like? I have the Lucent chipset version of the modem,
not the Rockwell.

Subject: Linux routing problem
Date: 3 Mar 1999 11:57:35 GMT

Hi,

Our network has several subclass B of an autonomous class B system

We are trying to set up a firewall with LRP ( Linux Router Project ).

As you can see in the diagram below, the fw has to see the network
X.Y.0.0 through O port and subnetwork X.Y.w.0 through I port. But using class B
mask, PC1 is not able to reach even the fw port O. It obviously can, using
class C mask, but our intranet PCs use class B masks.

Our Cisco router can properly handle with this situation but we don't
know how it is implemented ( is it a protocol feature of IGRP ?.
Has RIP or OSPF similar functionability ? )

Do you know if there is any solution with LRP implementation ?
Many thanks in advance

When install this D-Link DE-528-CT pci ethernet card, the install
program give me ten options:
Novell Personal NetWare Windows for Workgroups v3.1
Novell NetWare Dos Client Windows for Workgroups v3.11
IBM PC LAN Support Program MS Windodws NT v3.5
MS LAN Manager for Dos Artisoft LANtastic v6.0
   Packet Driver Artisoft LANtastic v5.0
Which option will work for linux? Thanks for any advice.

Maybe you should read the manual page for ypbind:

[...]
       -broken_server
lets ypbind accept answers from servers running on
an illegal port number. This should usually be
avoided, but is required on Solaris 2.4 (there
should be a patch for Solaris which fixes this bro
              ken behaviour.)
[...]

It also works for Ultrix.

You shouldn't need this line, but if it doesn't work without it, try
"ether=0,0,eth0". Don't ever specify irq's or i/o's for PCI cards.
Also, use the pci-ne2k driver, not the ne2000 driver.

Yes, everything for 10.* is routed to the network connected to eth0.
Explanation of the routing rules:
Destination: traffic going to this network is routed by this rule
Gateway: traffic is routed to this gateway, *=physical network
Genmask: The netmask for the destination
Iface: traffic is routed over this interface

Assuming your IP is somewhere in 10.*, you should be able to ping yourself.

You could eiher use a real proxy server, like squid, or use IP-Masquerading

I use IPCHAINS and think I have to use IPMAQAD

I have installed samba on my linux 2.2.2 machine
but cannot access any shared directory from my windows machines.

My windows machines are in a NT domain,
and because the Domain server should NOT be used to verify pwds etc
the Linux machine is another domain/workgroup.

But: In the nework neighbourhood only the Win95/98 computers are able to see
the linux machine ( they cannot access it anyway).
under NT no icon is visible and accessing directly via address doesnt work
also.

any ideas ?

Look in /etc/securetty or something of the sort.

No matter how secure you think you are you should get into the
habit of not telnet'ing and ftp'ing as root. You should do it as
a normal use and then su to root. Root passwords are too easily
sniffed as they're sent plain text.

Many installations will have /etc/securetty set up to disallow such
actions by default (all installations should do so IMHO). Despite
whether or not you "should" do it, this file may be preventing you
from doing what you currently wish to do.

So... Unless I'm totally lost here... I SHOULD be able to simply replace
the "ppp.c" source file that is OEM with Slackware v3.6 (Linux v2.0.35),
recompile the kernel and then by changing the symlink to point to
pppd-2.3.5 in the /usr/?bin dir - I SHOULD have 'demand dialing' ?

I just paid a visit to the ftp url you mention below and there were
several files there. What is the filename of the one you reference ?
I want to get this right :)

And what are these "problems" with the versioning code you mention,
and how do I 'fix' them ?

Subject: PPP error "No network protocols running"
Date: Wed, 03 Mar 1999 01:57:51 GMT

Hello,

I have been running Slackware 3.4 for more than a year, most recently
with kernel 2.0.36 . Recently I bought a Diamond Multimedia
SupraExpress 56e Pro external modem, and eventually got pppd working.
Last week I moved to kernel 2.2.2, after upgrading every package I am
using from the changes file. This included a move to ppp-2.3.5 .
Ever since I have been unable to connect to my ISP Demon Internet in
the UK from Linux, a most sorry predicament.

I have been reading all PPP-related messages in this group for three
days, and having seen about 150 messages, I have not seen anyone with
(apparently) the same problem.

When I runn ppp-on my modem dials, and makes the usual noises/flashing
lights, but disconnects after a few seconds. The error message found
in /var/log/debug, "No network protocols running" comes from the
source file auth.c. Below I include a number of files that I hope are
sufficient to troubleshoot this. There is a time discrepancy between
/var/log/messages and /var/log/debug because I went back to Linux and
switched pppd's kdebug level from 0 to 1 after reading one of today's
messages, but no other configuration changed between sessions.

I have a PCI ethernet card properly configured, which works perfectly
(for HTTP, at least).

Thanks in advance,

Mark Roberts.

Probably 3COM has software to do this - from DOS. Try downloading the
drivers for the card.

we have a group called mm
all the users are in this group
creator and owner of the directory inet is the group mm

the problem is, that when a user saves a file or makes a new directory
he is creator and owner of this file/directory and other users cannot
overwrite or delete the file.

everything workes fine with netatalk (accessing files from a mac).

any ideas?

xaver

ps. please send your answer to my email address as well, thanks.

The Linux "EQL" is not Multilink PPP (MP). EQL is better know by the
term "load balancing". Rumor has it that EQL is supported only by some
Livingston Portmasters, but I can't verify this. Both sides of the ppp
connection must support it for two-way load balancing. I don't know
whether one-way is possible or not.

: Is EQL compatible with an ISP running a US Robotics Total Control Box? If

Here's a link about ongoing Linux MP work that might help:

 http://mp.ins-coin.de/

The newer kernel have some information about the Linux EQL in the file
linux/Documentation/networking/eql.txt

: More importantly, when an ISP says they support Multilink PPP, does this
: mean EQL will work, or is there some other method for doing Multilink?

Again, MP is not EQL.

I assume you mean Red Hat 5.0? (Linux is only at 2.2.2!)

You can actually allow root login from telnet, but it is disabled by
default. It is easy enough to just su to root after loggin in.

It looks like your ftp package is not installed. Try installing it via
RPM.
Linking to the tftpd (trivial file xfer protocol) will probably not
help.

If you have the stock Dell Bios of v.A09, download the upgraded bios v.A11 off
the Dell website at http://www.dell.com...go to the support/file library
section.

I flashed the new bios and now my internal mobo 16550A serial and my add-on
16C650 hi-speed serial card work perfectly with my ISDN TA....good luck.
