What are the domains, workgroups or network? What is your setup
in terms of ip addresses?
Are Linux and NT on the same subnet/network?
What do you see for smbclient -L NT-machine?
Have you setup sampasswd - see man smbpasswd.
Have you setup your shares in smb.conf?
Have you set encryption in smb.conf? You can use encrypt
passwords = yes for NT.
You said below 95/98 machines cannot access etc. They could if
they were connected?

I have installed Redhat-Linux 5.2 on my HP-4100 Omnibook.
I have got some problems with my Xircom card.
System is not recognizing the card.
I use Xircom RealPort Ethernet 10/100+ Modem 56.
I am unable to use network functions.

According to /usr/src/linux-2.0.36/Documentation/networking/vortex.txt
the media type setting for 10baseT is 0.
Therefore the module insert command is
insmod 3c59x.o debug=1 options=0
The 3C590 COMBO was shipped (over my objections) with 10Base-2 (thin coax)
the default transceiver. By default, 3c59x.o respects the EEPROM settings
on the card, so you either have to change the settings or insert the
driver with the options=0 argument.

I'm not absolutely sure but I think you have to forward explicitely the tcp/ip
frames
from the test machine to the external.
I'm using ipchains and set the rule : "ipchains -A forward -j MASQ".
If you are using ipfwadm, there must an equivalent.

This was a little confussing, sorry. I can ping 24.42 from 25.65 but only
sometimes. When I can not ping 24.42 from 25.65 I can still ping 24.42 from
the linux host 24.1, so the host is 24.42 is alive. Also when I cant ping
24.42 from 25.65 I can ping 24.66 and 24.83 from 25.65 so routing seems to
be working.
Heres the setup from the linux box

ifconfig eth1 192.168.24.1

Hi
First you should look if Masquerading works properly, e.g.:
ipfwadm -F -a accept -m -S 192.168.1.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0
The default gateway on the NT - machines is the internal address of the
linux - gateway.
Now you should be able to surf the web from your NT - machine via the
linux - machine.
Maybe you should deactivate your firewall during you make this test to
make sure that there
is no problem with your firewall - configuration.
If everything works so far, Masquerading is set up correctly. You wrote
that there were no
error messages during the setup of the virtual server code, so the
compile options of the kernel should be correct. After typing the
ippfvsadm -A -t .... command you should check it with ippfvsadm -L .
This command should show you the configuration you typed in before.
Thats all we did to make it work and it is doing a really fine job :-)
If it still doesnt work, there maybe other problems like routing
problems or something like that.
You should consider installing tcpdump (I think this is included in most
distributions) on your linux - machine and take a look on your network
interfaces during you contact your portforwarder from "outside". Thus
you can see if there is traffic from the linux to the NT - machine.
You can also ask the author of the virtual server, you can get his
address on the virtual server home page. Maybe he sees a mistake I dont
see right now.
Hope this helps

You have two seperate worries. One is spoofing - when someone sets their
computer up to work behind your masquerading firewall, and then does
something illegal and makes it look like you did it. (This is a somewhat
simplified explanation of it, but you get the idea.) There is a
protection
for this, I don't know how to install it, but on my system, when it
boots,
it says "Setting up IP Spoofing Protection"...Check dmesg
The other worry is that someone will comprimise your Linux box. If they
do that, they probably have pretty free reign over that and your other
two machines. You would set up a standard firewall for this....

I have a similar problem: but the connection is made only at FIRST login,
later logins without restarting windows pass unnoticed. I use Samba as a
logon server. Diald debug tells me that 2-4 packets are sent to the external
nameserver after the logon script has finished. I have not found out whos
address is wanted, if I had it maybe could be prevented by listing it in

BIG thanks! I dumped the proxy config web page to my system, and then
pointed my
netscape proxy settings at it on my local system. That did the trick!
I did not know that Sympatico HSE filters all 80 packets. I have setup

do the same

Why can't you use the tulip module?
/sbin/modprobe tulip
I have a DEC21141 compatible card and have no problem with either module,
tulip or de4x5x. tulip performs much better though.
Edit you /etc/rc.d/rc.modules file and uncomment the location where the
tulip driver is loaded and make sure you find tulip.o under
/lib/modules/2.0.36/net/ (or whatever kernel version you have).
Good luck!.
