Subject: Win98 dial-in to Linux route to Novell - Help please
Date: Wed, 2 Jun 1999 13:13:49 +0800

Desperately need help setting this up.

Scenario:

site A network:
Linux Server with Dialin running mgetty, ipxd
            Novell Server

site B (standalone PC):
Windows 98 running dial-up networking client

Site B needs to dial in to the linux box and access the novell server.

At the moment I can successfully connect. I can access the Internet from
the 98 dialup client through the Linux box (IP masquerading). The linux
box has a modem for dialing out to the Internet (/dev/ttyS1) and another for
dialing in (/dev/ttyS0).

I can't however see the novel server.

I have ipxd running. The ethernet device eth0 has an IPX address and the
dial-in adapter ppp0 also
gets assigned one after the dial in has occurred. It just seems thatit is
not routing ipx from ppp0 to eth0.

I have read the IPX howto and the Linux: IPX over PPP howto.

Any advice would be most appreciated.

Here are my setup files:

Date: Wed, 2 Jun 1999 13:47:59 +0200

Hi,
i've got a problem with my RH5.2 distribution of linux! i configured kppp
the way it was shown in several comp-magazines for logging in at my isp's
server using PAP - but it doesn't work at all.
the modem dials properly, but it fails to log in. my isp said that my login,
password and servername should be added to the file /etc/ppp/pap-secrets,
but i don't know how in detail. there are two lines of introduction: the
format of an entry should be something like:
client server secrets IP adresses
but what does this mean? i'm not good in English at all (you may have
noticed that already *grin*) since i'm from Germany, hmm.
if you know the answer to my problem please mail me to:

thanx, Melle

It's curious that pppd doesn't attempt to negotiate an IP address, which
is the most likely reason for "No network protocols running." This would
happen if pppd is given the option "noip" or the older option "-ip",
but there's nothing else I know about that would do it - given the
messages above.

Well, i had a similar problem, just not with that card. I found if you set the
module to ne2k-pci that it worked just fine. You might try that, or just see
what modules that come close. (You can add modules with linuxconf, under
adaptor settings... or you could do it other ways, im just not sure how. ;P)

good luck..

Subject: Problems with RedHat 6.0, help!
Date: Wed, 02 Jun 1999 14:47:05 GMT

I just deleted my RedHat 5.2 partition and re-installed with 6.0. However,
I am having a variety of problems I don't know how to solve or why they are
happening.

1) Network card doesn't work. it is detected by the module and ifconfig
shows it to work just fine. It is assigned an IP address of 10.0.0.101 by
DHCP and route shows that 10.0.0.0 is routed through eth0. Yet, a simple
ping to the machine next to it with IP address 10.0.0.67 doesn't work
either direction. I am stumped.

2) Can't recompile kernel. Well, I can, but can't use it. Lilo tells me
the kernel is too big. it is only 480K, which is much smaller than the
kernel that Redhat6.0 came with and was using before I recompiled it.
Theirs is 1,469,449 bytes.. So Why can theirs work, but mine (which is only
33% of the size) is too big?

I have a variety of other smaller issues which I am sure I can figure out,
but these two are irritating me to no end.. and until I get the kernel
compiled and the network card working I am stuck! please help!

Depending on what you define as expensive, there is
Kermit95:
http://www.columbia.edu/kermit/k95.html

Also, Symantec has a program known as Procomm Plus.
That has a world of utilities but tends to be much more expensive.

Here at Iowa State University, we have a site license on a telnet product that
is distributed by Hummingbird.

Thank you!

Is there a way to get gcc (cc) to generate a full listing file? On
VMS I can generate a listing with line numbers and all macros and
includes expanded. It makes tracking down this sort of problem very
easy...just edit the listing and do a search for the offending string,
then look to see where it came from. I looked over the gcc man and
info pages and I couldn't find anything that would do this. I found
things that got me *some* of what I wanted (like macro expansions and
typedefs), but it left out the actual source...just had a lot of blank
lines. Is there a way to get a *full* listing of what actually got
compiled?

I found the patch...and, yes, I'm trying to figure out what to do with
it now! :^) I assume it has something to do with the "patch" program,
but I haven't figured out how to use that yet... :^)

No, I kept the tar file around. Disk space is cheap...modems are
slow! :^)

BTW - I signed on to the diald mailing list and found that 0.16-5
isn't the most recent version. 0.99 seems to be. This is from a

Date: Wed, 02 Jun 1999 15:58:10 GMT

I've searched allover the place and can't find an answer to this (if
there is one elsewhere, a pointer to it would be nice...)

I have a Slackware box running kernel 2.2.6 with all the kernel options
configured as the IP Masquerade FAQ says to along with the rc.firewall,
etc. The only difference is I'm using 10.10.10.0/24 as my internal
network class C. eth1 on my Linux box is configured as 10.10.10.1 and
the Windows box is 10.10.10.2. Someone told me I should be using the
192.168 netblock but couldn't give a definite reason why.

ipchains shows that ICMP is being masqueraded, ping and traceroute work
fine from the Windows machine to the outside world. ipchains also shows
UDP being masqueraded (netbios from the Windows box). But, as soon as I
try to ftp or use netscape, ftp gives some obscure Windows error number
and netscape says "unable to create network socket". Any ideas?

I can send more info later on today when I'm at home if needed.

if you are already able to access your ZIP drive from your linux PC, the
next step is to make sure that you can access your linux PC from your
windows boxes. to do this you need to run and configure SAMBA in your
linux PC. read

 http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/SMB-HOWTO.html

also, smb must be configured in your kernel. on the windows side, they
must be running client for MS networks.

This is not a modem. It is a digital-analog converter that puts all
real work onto the CPU of the host system via some sort of Win9x
VXD driver. It will never work outside of a Win environment at all.
Sell it to a Win9x-only user and buy a fine external USR V.90
model instead (or an Acer V90, e.g.) .
