I recently installed linux (RH 5.2) and the KDE and I'm quite
impressed by it. One problem is annoying, however: an error is thrown
when I type a hostname to connect the PC via ftp or telnet:
ftp machine.foo.fr
host lookup failed (or something like that, I'm not on Linux right now).
There's no problem when I specify the IP address...
I've a stand-alone PC and a ppp link to the net. I probably did
something silly when installing the kernel or packages.
Is some package missing?

Subject: NIS managing and lock file ?
Date: Fri, 05 Mar 1999 09:47:01 +0100
Hello, world !
I use NIS for 10 Linux boxes running RH5.1 (kernel 2.0.34).
It works fine (thank you Thorsten Kukuk et al. !).
I wrote some scripts and C programs ( my NIS-utils !)
for managing passwd and group files (the only maps I need):
the filenames I use are:
/var/yp/ypfiles/nis-passwd.
/var/yp/ypfiles/nis-group.
Suppose I'm running my `nis-add-user' script, modifying the
`/var/yp/ypfiles/nis-passwd' file and simultanously, a NIS-user
logged on a client box is running `yppasswd' to change his/her password:
so in some case, it could be a problem !
Is there a way to disallow access to these files and maps from the
`yppasswdd' daemon ?
Could it be a good idea to have on a NIS server a lock file
(say `/var/lock/subsys/.nis-admin-is-working') sharable with
`yppasswdd' and any NIS-managing program used
by the NIS-administrator ?
Then `yppasswdd' could answer the `yppasswd' client something like:
`yppasswd: warning : NIS is locked ! The NIS administrator
is doing some stuff with NIS files and maps. Try again later !'
May be someone has a better solution, I mean a solution other than the
suite:
# yppasswdd stop
# ...
# doing some stuff with `/var/yp/ypfiles/nis-passwd' and/or \
`/var/yp/ypfiles/nis-group' then NIS maps
# ...
# yppasswdd start
???
Thank you for your help ! Enjoy Linux !

I'm trying to find the time to update the website, but what is in there at

Have a look at http://www.useless.co.za and look at the Linux Quick And

At a prompt, type ifconfig and see what comes up. You should have an
interface name 'lo' first, with ip 127.0.0.1, then any ethernet cards
you have will be listed after that. If you don't have lo, than you need
to put up your loopback interface...I think it's in the kernel (or in a
module if you've got them). You may have to recompile.

Make sure you have an /etc/ppp/options file. It doesn't need to have
anything in it, it just needs to be there.
Also make sure you have the defaultroute option set.

Many linux distributions does not support dbm database formats
(in out of the box state).
1) compile virtusertable as "hash"
cd /etc
makemap -v hash virtusertable < virtusertable
2) change type of the virtusertable in your /etc/sendmail.cf
and make it compulsory (no -o)
OLD:
Kvirtuser -o dbm /etc/virtusertable
NEW:
Kvirtuser hash /etc/virtusertable

Basically, read the help for select() and you might need to play with
nonblock/blocking modes for the file descriptor. You can select a socket for
the purposes of doing an accept() somehow - can't remember exactly. You can
set a timeout so if it returns that nothing has changed after the timeout,
you can stop. If I had more spare time I would write a vague example but I
don't.
Don't call the accept() if you're in blocked mode till you know it's ready
to accept - oh yeah, the group FAQ has info on this too... Plenty of
articles have links to it I'm sure.

Firstly, I would like to thanks you all for your suggestions. They were,
and are, very helpful.
Secondly, as of right now, I have a partial solution to my problem. I
followed Cameron's suggestion and visited the 3Com web site looking for the
Microsoft diagnostic program. I found the new drivers, but I could not find
the configuration program, 3c59xcfg.exe.
So I then took Cameron's second suggestion and visited Donald Becker's
site. Here I found the new Linux driver plus a wealth of information. In
particular, there was a table listing the options for the driver; I needed
options=0 to switch from 10Base-2 to 10Base-T. I thus "rmmod" my 3c59x
module and attempted an "insmod 3c59x.o options=0", but this failed with
the error that it couldn't open 3c59x.o. I then checked that 3c59x.o
existed and was in the proper /lib/modules/`uname -r`/net directory, it
was. I then tried "insmod /lib/modules/`uname -r`/net/3c59x.o" and this
still complained about not being able to open 3c59x.o. So I decided to try
the "modprobe" way of loading this module: "modprobe 3c59x.o options=0" and
this worked fine. So I now have a working ethernet card, the machine is
connected to the Internet, and I can download the new drivers directly -
yeh!
Of course, whenever I power down the machine, upon power up the card
reverts to the EEPROM settings of 10Base-2. So I either still need the
3c59xcfg.exe configuration program in order to change the default
interface, or I'll need to add the options line to my lilo configuration,
or perhaps add a modprobe line to one of the boot scripts.
Thank you for your time and help, they are much appreciated.
Regards,
Nick Bourbaki

P.S. I searched the net looking for the 3c59xcfg.exe program, and I found

program itself to download. Does anyone know a site from where this can be
downloaded? Thanks.

I, and other newbies, had this same problem. You need to get the ip address
of your ISP's DNS server. Edit etc/resolv.conf to add:
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
where the x's are the address of the DNS server.

I also said no to predictor1 at the same time, but I don't think
that really has anything to do with it. Does anyone know if

Subject: Problems mounting a SunSolaris filesystem through NFS
Date: Fri, 05 Mar 1999 11:15:22 +0100
Hello,
Recently I installed a Suse6.0 distribution on my PC. With the
permission of
the system manager of my Department I mounted through NFS a filesystem
on a
Sun Ultra2 Sparc machine, running Solaris 2.6 (this is the machine where
my
user's disk space is located). Twice the filesystem was succesfully
mounted,
but, after working a little bit (e.g, running Netscape 4.5 from my Linux
box
on my user in the nfs filesystem) the NFS server of the SunSolaris
machine
crashed (RPC stopped).
(In the Solaris machine I run Netscape 3.01, and both (Netscape 3.01 in
the
Sun machine and Netscape 4.5 in the Linx box) share the same .netscape
directory; I don't know if this can cause troubles).
The system manager of my Dept. is not giving me more permission for
mounting this filesystem until I can tell him how do it without
causing difficulties to the rest of users.
The current line of the /etc/fstab file in my Linux box is:
xampany:/users/onl3 /users/onl3 nfs bg,soft
1 2
(anyway, when trying from bash:
# mount -t nfs xampany:/users/onl3 /users/onl3
we got the same bad results
).
I must say that the Solaris machine has been running as a nfs
client and server for more than two years without problems, in a network
of other Sun and Dec-Alpha Stations.
Do you have some idea about how to "cleanly" mount this filesystem from
Linux?
Thanks a lot.
(I would appreciate receiving any answer to my e-mail address, as well
as
to the news groups, just to be sure I won't loss any important
information
you could provide me).

I do this on my server with a mail alias. This syntax may not be 100% as I'm
doing it from memory.
add the following to /etc/aliases
mailalias: " | /usr/local/script.sh "
check that permissions are set correctly so that sendmail / smail etc... can
execute the script.
Your mail message will then be piped into your script for your custom
processing.
I have several mail notifications configured each with their own mail alias
and I use this method to generate scripts to collect files via FTP or LYNX
and download to a local mirror area to view off line.
Make sure you run 'newaliases' to get the new alias processed.

In addition to that, with one ethernet card, the cable company can
easily detect that you're masquerading a bunch of machines. Although
this doesn't seem to be a worry, yet, sooner or later they're going to

This sounds like a DNS problem...

My guess about the hangs is that from location "y", you can't get to the
system that you set up as your name server at location "x". So you have
to
wait for the DNS stuff to time out when each network service starts.
The
most likely reason for that (in turn) is that you didn't change your
gateway
when you changed IP address.
Exactly how to make this change is dependent on your system
configuration.
On my Debian 2.0 system, I would edit /etc/init.d/network and specify
the new
gateway there along with my new IP. I'm sure there's some control panel
thing to do this on RedHat... whatever. Just look around close to where
you
specified the new IP address and look for a gateway option, and make
sure it
gets set to the right value for your network.
HINT: If you don't want to wait another 20 minutes to get into Linux to
make
this change, hit your SHIFT key when the LILO message appears and type
"linux single" (or something else if your LILO label isn't "linux"...
just
add single on the end). This will give you a root shell before starting
any
daemons, so you can fix the problem and then change to a multi-user
runlevel.
That help?
