I got the same problem, I made the file smbpasswd, what should be in
smbusers to enable encryption?  I can log in with plain text, but not with
encrypted passwords.

Thanks again, but again no joy.  I tried

I also tried several other variations and flags on cu but couldn't get
anywhere.  In the search for lock files, I have previously tried
> find / -iname "LCK*" -print
and it returns nothing, indicating to me that there are no lock files on
my system.  I found someone locally who does linux consulting and he
suggested that I check the jumper interrupt setting on both my modem and
my soundcard.  He said that because I told him that in my linux bootup
messages there is something about a conflict on IRQ3 involving the
soundblaster card.  I also found a second serial address in my BIOS
which he said I should disable.  Cooincidently, ever since I went from
RedHat 5.1 to 5.2 the soundblaster quit working.  But the modem was
working fine until the reset incident.  So I guess I will attack the
machine with a screwdriver tonight.

At work, we have a variety of naming conventions. Typically, tho, it
boils down to a three-character dept id, followed by a three-character
group id, followed by a two digit user number.
In this vein, we have SRDSCS00, SRDOLB14, etc.

At home, I name my machines with personal names that sound appropriate
to the machine's primary usage.
"Merlin" is my server; it knows all, and is kept in a dark, dank dungeon
like Merlin was kept by Nimue. "Bitsie" is my workstation; it's cute,
friendly, and sometimes acts like a little child.

There's no indication in this log that the ISP disconnects, but that's

This is unusual in that the ISP sends an "unsolicited Nak", in response
to the pppd CCP request with no options.  This appears to be a hint for
pppd to request that the ISP send data using Microsoft Point-to-Point
Compression aka MS-PPC.  Just before this pppd rejected sending data to
the ISP using MS-PPC and two flavors of STAC compression.

Ordinarily failure to negotiate any common CCP options is not a problem,
but there's nothing else unusual in the negotiations.

It's possible that the ISP is configured to require the use of MS-PPC
when sending to the client.  If this is the case then you're out of luck
unless you can convince the ISP not to require it.  Even getting to talk
to someone at the ISP that understands the question will be a pain.

I'd consider looking for another ISP - unless something else could be
identified as the cause of the problem.

Hi All,

I've been trying to setup a little dialup offline mail server, I'm using
fetchmail and sendmail together.

I've setup a dial up script to connect to my isp, it then runs "sendmail -q"
to flush my mail, at this point it promptly forks off into the background
and starts sending mail.  Whilst this is happening fetchmail grabs all my
mail off another server.  The script will then disconnect me from my isp.

My problem is that even if sendmail is still sending mail, once fetchmail
has finished retrieving mail, the next step in my script is to disconnect
from the ISP.  As a result I can't be guaranteed to have all my mail sent.
What can I do to ensure that I won't be disconnected from my ISP until all
my mail is sent.  Is there a way to make sendmail send mail in the
foreground, ie it won't start fetchmail until the sendmail -q has finished?

Y'know, you're right actually. I mis-spoke.

The real point of /etc/securetty is that you can make sure root can only

log on from the console, which make sniffers not really an issue.

I didn't put sufficient thought into my answer. I guess it's not really

issue for me since none of my boxes have telnet or ftp, I only use ssh.

Any external modem will work or an internal modem that is configurable
with jumper pins, such as USR or Acer ITU ISA modems.

    As you already know, Linux can be pretty picky about  the hardware that
you use unless you have the time and inclination to write your own scripts.
I did, however, find a very inexpensive modem that works great with Linux --
Thunderlink fax/data -- you can get a 33.6 for less than twenty bucks, and a
56K for about $35.  For a "no-name" brand, it works great.  Good luck.

cable problem?  How can I test the cables?  I have 3 cables...so I
just connect them  and test each cable by using "ping" to get the
access time, etc?

Also, what do u mean by cable problem?  too long cable? or faulty
cable itself?

Sorry, yes that is a typo and should read 192.168.2.0 . My routing table
should look like:

255.255.255.255    *    255.255.255.255    U    0    0    0    eth0
192.168.2.0            *    255.255.255.0        U    0    0    0    eth0

127.0.0.0                *    255.0.0.0                U    0    0
1    lo

My linux host name/address as seen in /etc/hosts is:

192.168.2.1    gate.slackatude.com gate

The W98 machine is:

192.168.2.12    snort.slackatude.com snort

Any routing problems here?

I had similar experience until I was tipped to 'setserial' ...
    I use 'setserial /dev/cua2 auto_irq autoconfig'
        It may be worth investigating... it has a man page.
