Subject: SuSE 2NIC's and DHCP client
Date: Sun, 07 Mar 1999 14:14:53 +0100
Hallo,
I have 2 NIC's installed on 1 PC. One NIC (eth0) is connected to an ISP
using a cable modem.
The ISP gives me a dynamic IP. The other NIC (eth1:192.168.0.1) is
connected to a second PC(192.168.0.2) using static IP.
1. DHCP Client activated by Yast:
eth0 works properly.
eth1 doesn't appear at the startup-listing and ifconfig eth1 gives
0.0.0.0 So ping 192.168.0.2 doesn't work.
2. DHCP Client not activated:
The 2 NIC's appears at startup.
eth1 works. I can ping 192.168.0.2
eth0 doesn't work. Of course I need a dynamic IP
How can obtain the following configuration ?
eth0 dynamic IP and eth1 static IP
Thanks for helping this newbie

I'm connected just fine to my ISP, and ppp appears working fine. I can
get to www sites (via Netscape) by number... but not by name. Tried
nslookup, but it never returns either.
Does IP packet forwarding have anything to do with this?
It doesn't look like named is running. Is there an easy way to display
all processes... even daemons? I'm not running a local name server.
Config: RH5.2, KDE1.1, kppp, local peer-to-peer lan, ISP=Netcom.
Host=pro200nx, Domain=netcom.com, IP=10.1.1.4.
The only "odd" entry I see my Windoze networking is that "use IP
compression" is enabled. Haven't seen a Linux anlog to that.
Regards, Mike
PS - a simple setup for small lan (W98,NT4,no server), ISP dialout
which includes which services/daemons/host/domain/ whatever names
would be much appreciated.

All my neighbouring computers are in the same submask but the network is
dhcp based for WINS Microsoft Network.
I'm not so familiar with the network stuff on Linux...... just a newbie, but
I felt headache if I tried to access my neighbouring PCs' shares:
For Linux -> MS:
1. I have to know the name (NetBios) of the PC/ the IP address of the PC
2. I have to know the shared service's name on that PC
3. I donno whether there's passwd setted on that......
All the 1, 2 & 3 stuff.... I gotta get by going out to a neighbouring room
and look that up on a MS Machines...
For MS -> MS
1. I just have to click on the Network Neighbourhood Icon and then all the
neighbouring PC available on the same submask will show up....
2. To manipulate the shared resources on every single PC, I just have to
browse in the windows on each machine
I don't have to know the name of the PC nor its IP nor its sharenames...
Anyway...... I really like Linux... To fight against the monopoly....
I really hope somebody can help me..... to give us some solutions......
Best Regards
John

I had the same problem on nearly the exact same PC. I have a
Gateway 2000 P5-100 Family PC. Disabling PnP alone didn't work for
me, either. In fact, if I remember right, PnP didn't have to be
disabled. The problem was the IRQ and possibly the address. Boot
into Windows 95 DOS-mode and run the configuration program that
came with the NIC (3c5x9cfg.exe or something like that). Reset
the card, reboot and see what happens to the IRQ. I noticed it currently
is 10 for you. When I reset the card, the IRQ changed to 11 and miraculously
it worked. Also, the address will probably be 0x210 or something
to that effect.
The 3c509b (Etherlink III TPO ISA NIC) seems to give a lot of people
this same problem. It _can_ be done. It just needs a little tinkering.
Oh, and be sure to disable PnP in your BIOS. Windows 9x doesn't need it
and Linux doesn't like it. This could also affect this problem.

Ronald,
Your smbpasswd may not be setup. Look at the man for
smbpasswd its simple. Also look at /etc/smbusers.
The encryption is OK set at yes.
After you execute smbpasswd you shoud have something like the
following in your /etc/smbpasswd.
# Samba SMB password file

Subject: Linux as a router to replace school NT4 box?
Date: Sat, 6 Mar 1999 20:16:30 -0000
Hi,
We have just configured a NT4 box to route between two subnets on our school
LAN, however as the current setup with the NT4 box is tying up a machine we
are wondering if we could run linux on a old 486 or 386 todo the routing.
We have copies of Red hat Linux 5.1 & S.u.S.E Linux 5.2.
Currently our NT4 box has two ethernet cards assigned ip 192.168.2.31 &
192.168.3.31 respectively, both with a netmask of 255.255.255.0.
Should configuring a Linux box to do this be fairly straightforward and
would a 386 /486 cope with network traffic (about 60 pc's across both
subnet's). I have setup linux a few years ago as a web server (apache), but
have never tried routing with it.
The alternative is for the school to buy a new NT box to replace the one
that is currently handling the routing.
Regards,
Andy

You seem to be confused about the role of the Xserver here or are not
explaining it well.
Fact:
If a Linux box has no monitor, keyboard or mouse is does not need X running on
it. Period.
I use numerous xTerminals (IBM) that boot off of IBM risc6000's and none of
these risc6000's
are running X.
This does not prevent you from opening up an xterm on a given box because when
requested to do so by your xTerminal, your firewall responds by becoming the
*client* off of your xTerminal's Xserver.
Hope this sheds some light....

Well, why not? :-) (Because it consumes RAM for only a small performance
gain on a single, modem-connected client machine, that's why.)
Edit the file /etc/resolv.conf adding lines of the form
nameserver 207.69.188.187
nameserver 204.71.177.33
(If you do not have a Mindspring account or a business relationship
with Yahoo, it would be extremely rude to use these numbers. I just
picked them because I like examples that work. Your ISP will tell you
what name servers you should use.
BTW, Mindspring is Linux-friendly and spammer-hostile, and therefore
deserves your business IMHO. If you are doing Green movement work or
fighting spam, you can use my nameservers in a pinch. Mail me.)

Linux PPP negotiates IP header compression at connect time, automatically.

If your Linux box is a gateway between your LAN and a modem to the
Internet, you *should* run a nameserver and point the W98 and NT
boxes at it. Your users will think you bought a faster modem.
Tell them Linux does that for free, if they ask. This is the best
kind of Linux advocacy.

Hi J
When you modprobe 3c507 the "modprobe" searches the file
"/lib/modules/2.0.36/modules.dep" for a row containing the text
"/lib/modules/2.0.36/net/3c507.o" and its dependencies. I this row is not
found you get an error message. Try "insmod 3c507" instead of modprobe (the
module 3c507.o must be present in the /lib/modules/2.0.36/net directory) or
run depmod (see corresponding man pages).
Ciao

Any possibility of being posted the floppy?, please.
and to think I was concerned that the 100MB hard drives in our old 386/486's
would be too small!

Turns out the problem was simple, ipfwadm-2.3.0-6.alpha.rpm is
apparently broken in both RedHat 5.1 and 5.2 for alpha. Going back to
ipfwadm-2.3.0-5.alpha.rpm from Redhat 5.0 alpha fixed the problem.
Thanks for the help
