Have just completed implemented SNMP subagents on NT and Solaris
platforms.

Must do the same for the Linux platform.

Could you point me in the right direction to track down the needed
documentation and software to
implement SNMP and write a subagent.

Would appreciate any assistance.

Thanks

It's kinda obvious isn't it? :) The 2.2 kernels has evolved over a
hundred patches while in the 2.1 stage and is vastly improved over the
2.0 kernels. It also has a lot more new options and dependencies that
most probably did not exist in the 2.0 kernels too. Have a look at the
'Kernel-HOWTO' (in detail) and understand the giz of it, then cd to
/usr/src/linux and do your stuffs.

In a nutshell, you will need to do the following ;-

cd /usr/src/linux
make mrproper
make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make bzlilo
make modules
make modules_install

Cheers.

1- Just add the following lines in your sendmail.cf:
     Djsomewhere.com
     Fw/etc/sendmail.cw

2- In sendmail.cw put the hosts that will use the relay such as:
    host1.somewhere.com
    host2.somewhere.com
    .
    .
If your hosts are not qualified names (fqdn) use the hosts file
like :  192.168.1.1    host1.somewhere.com
           192.168.1.2    host2.somewhwre.com

Hope this helps

Followup:

since in the rshd man page it says the accept call comes after the
server looks up the hostname of the client, I'd like to be able
to do strace on rshd (RedHat 5.0) to see what is going on on the other
side.
If anoyne could tell me how to set inetd.conf to allow that I would most
appreciate that.

I need a dual port PCI ethernet card for one of my servers. From
looking around I get the impression the Znyx ZX348 should be well
supported. Anyone used this card? Anyone used it with a 2.0.X
kernel?

Any recomendations for other well supported dual channel cards?

Hi!
If I type the command: route add -host 192.168.10.52 netmask
255.255.255.255 metric 1
I see the error message: route: netmask 00000000 does not make sense with
host route

(You will not believe how often I have seen this message)

Until now I have tried the connction with the BNC-cable-connection. But today
I have bought me
a Twisted Pair cable. The Package says the following:

Twisted Pair Network-Cable
2 x RJ45-plug with Level 5 cable
For connection of two network-components with RJ45-jack.
The use of Level 5 cable guarantees highest data-safety.

I think that this should work, but I am still not able to ping my other host.

I have also tried the thing with tcpdump. I followed a book as I named my two
hosts and the Damain:
My Host:         adamix
Other Host      evamix
The Domainnames of both computers are paradix.
So the output of tcpdump an my computer gives me:
20:02:03.883625    arp    who-has    evamix.paradix    tell    adamix.paradix

                    .
                    .
                    .
                    .
Nothing except the time and the Number changes in all of the following lines.

If I quit this listing I receive:
13 packets received by filter
0 packets droped by Kernel

The route:    192.168.10.0    255.255.255.0    eth0
is set on both machines.

I would be really very happy if somebody can give me an answer for my problem
so that can care about new
interesting things about network.

Many Thanx:    Fabian

Subject: DNS - Some resolve, some don't!
Date: 4 Jun 1999 02:31:13 GMT

Hi,

I'll describe my problem and then post the relavent files below. I'm using
named for my DNS (w/ BIND 8) on Linux 2.0.36. Here's the deal:

With the domain: linuxstart.com, I'm having problems resolving:
fr.linuxstart.com

www.linuxstart.com works fine, but fr.linuxstart.com sometimes works, and
sometimes doesn't. I get a lot of email saying it doesn't work in parts of
the world. However, I've received many hits to that domain as well so I
know that a lot of people ARE getting there (I can get there almost all the
time from work + home).. But there are those occasions when no matter how
many times I try to go to "fr.linuxstart.com", I get the message from
Netscape:

"Netscape is unable to locate the server fr.linuxstart.com"

This is weird, because "www.linuxstart.com" works fine. Here's my
"/var/named/linuxstart.com" file:

; Zone file for linuxstart.com

@       IN      SOA     linuxstart.com. root.linuxstart.com.  (

fr              A       206.171.92.46

Not much too it, pretty simple. Here's the relevant section in my
/etc/named.conf file:

zone "linuxstart.com" {
        type master;
        file "linuxstart.com";
};

Like I said, sometimes "fr.linuxstart.com" resolves, and sometimes it
doesn't.  Please help!! :)

Thanks in advance!!!

I recently got some tips from dansgold about setting up my home net.
with NFS and Samba... this also brought on some more questions:

What I really want to do is a test run between my Win95 & linux box to
see if I can get them talking using TCP/IP. If I can then get NFS and
SMB going, I'll switch over the cable modem over to the linux box and
use it as my firewall/proxy.

SETUP:
1 Pentium 100 linux box with a Linksys PCI NIC using NE2000 driver ip
192.168.0.1
1 Pentium 166MMX ip 192.168.0.2 with Linksys PCI NIC & SMC NIC connected
to Cybersurfer WAVE cable modem via VIDEOTRON cable services
1 4 port hub connecting the pcs

1)I can ping the "localhost " and 127.0.0.1 on each machine;

2) can also ping the host ip address itself, but can't ping the other
box that's across the hub...it's as if the ping command was frozen, if I
do a CTRL C, it shows 100% packet loss;

3) the localhost on the Win95 pc seems to be linked to the SMC card
which is connected to the cable modem;

4) dansgold had suggested to me to take the cable modem and attach it to
the hub; fine...but because my ISP uses DHCP how will the modem know to
whom to assign an ip to in this case (random or both or neither???);

5)my subnet mask is 255.255.255.0;

I've read several HOW-TOs on TCP/IP, ETHERNET but am still a little
lost. I've gotten a little help as well, but not sure if I'm forgetting
something in my net.'s config...

NOTE: does route, subnet on linux and Win95 pc have any bearing on all
this???

Stephane.

Get rid of kppp. I still do not know why people use it-- it seems to
cause more problems than it is worth.

Just write a script to give your ISP what it wants. See
axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html
for instructions as to how to do it.

Hi,

I just bought a Via-Rhine based network card( NetEasy by D-Link, DSN-32TX).
After installing everything, it worked well, but I lose my sound. When the
eth0 interface is started up, I heard like a bump noise from the speakers,
that's when I loose the sound, but I could hear a very low volume sound,
when I set the volume to the max it still very low. My sound card is a
built-in OPL3SA2 sound card came with my DELL Dimension, the setup is
io=0x370 mss_io=0x540 irq=5 dma=0 dma2=1. I just installed a Linux Redhat
6.0. I tried to change the kernel but it won't do anything. Here the message
I got from dmesg|tail:

We had the same problem with the IBM 600E and the 3C575. We got the error "TX
Ring Full refused to send to buffer". We went back to the 3C574BT card and it
worked fine. We think the problem is with the cardbus on the IBM. The laptop is
setup to dual boot with NT4.0, the 3C575 works in NT. We are still looking into
it because we have several 3C575 cards and would like to be able to use them
with the dual boot laptops.

<stuff snipped> Try RTFMing your modem manual. +++ is a naguc sequence
that lets you give the modem a command while connected and yes, some
modems get confused. This is usually called a bug :-)

You can change the character by twidling one of the
registers. Apparently some jokers on IRC were exploiting this
"feature" to the cost of several users. One ISP used the bug to fix
the problem for users... almost none of the vulnerable products
managed to get back on line via the document AT command that should
have done it.

You could set a control character and shove it pppd's asyncmap to avoid
the problem.

Subject: ppp puzzling me

I try to connect to a server that calls back after asking for password,
secure_id, etc.
I use an expect script to establish the connection and show here only
the end of the script after the server has asked for the number to call.
Obviously expect sees eof on /dev/modem.
I then reopen the modem, configure it for autoanswer, send "ppp",
wait for ppp-garbage and then start pppd:

send $callback\r"

# wait for modem to hangup and then reopen it:
set timeout 60
expect eof
spawn -noecho -open [open $modem "r+"]
if {$spawn_id == 0} {
  send_user "trouble opening modem\n"
  exit
}
# enable autoanswer:
send "ATS0=1\r"
expect OK
expect {
  "*RLA_MchP_ISDN*" {
    send_user ppp\n
    send "ppp\r"
  }
}

expect "*~*"

overlay -0 $spawn_id -1 $spawn_id /usr/sbin/pppd\
/dev/modem 57600  $localip: \
crtscts modem defaultroute debug\
netmask $netmask asyncmap 0

This works sometimes, but most of the time I get:

Jun  4 20:49:56 M65646PP pppd[22315]: Using interface ppp0
Jun  4 20:49:56 M65646PP pppd[22315]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem
Jun  4 20:49:58 M65646PP pppd[22315]: Hangup (SIGHUP)
Jun  4 20:49:58 M65646PP pppd[22315]: Modem hangup
Jun  4 20:49:58 M65646PP pppd[22315]: Connection terminated.
Jun  4 20:49:58 M65646PP pppd[22315]: Exit.

If I configure the modem to ignore hangup, it seems to work reliably.

If I use dip instead of expect, it works too.
So, where comes the SIGHUP come from and why? Is is part of the "ppp
garbage?"

Thanks for any enlightenment.

PS: Another question: What speed do I have to give to pppd? The highest
the modem supports, the one, the two modems negotiated, or the speed
the serial line was configured for?
