Subject: PPP problem with diald
Date: 06 Mar 1999 15:14:17 PST
Hello...
I have been using EZPPP to get the PPP connection, with NO problems.
I am now trying to get DIALD to work.
RH 4.2 Linux 2.0.35 i686 --- diald version 0.16.5
I am getting a connection, but the ppp0 interface to the /dev/modem
seems to be the problem???
Notice the response from the bottom of this long winded email:
Mar 6 14:54:09 modprobe: Can't locate module ppp0
Mar 6 14:54:09 kernel: registered device ppp0
Notice that EZPPP is NOT having this problem:

I have linux 2.0.36 with two NIC's - an Ether express 16 and an Ether
express Pro 10+. The 16 is connected to my cable modem and is working
fine. The other I use with a cross-over to connect my laptop to the
internet via IP Masquerade. When I have the laptop connected the error
ceases. As soon as I disconnect the laptop the error begins periodically
appearing on the screen. Is there any way to disable this message? I
would be greatful for any assistance.

It works for me. Are you sure "dir" is a valid share on "server"? Run
"smbclient -L server" to confirm.

This question is asked moderately often (a few times a year).
It's also very rich in good search targets.
Like I said last time the simplest approach would probably be to block
via IP address and use "arp -f" to preload your ARP table.
As I also said last time if the clients are running a recent Linux
they can spoof hw addresses just as easily as IP ones (ifconfig).
Other operating systems allow you to alter MAC address but it's
less well documented. Security-by-obscurity is generally to be
avoided.

Subject: Auto ppp dial up
Date: Sat, 06 Mar 1999 17:57:43 -0600
I have my ppp set up and working as a gateway to my 4 other machines in
my home. However I have to log in as root every time to connect to the
internet via my isp. I would like to enable a dial on demand or
something simular so that When a request comes from one of the other
machines it will dial out automatically. My server does not use PAP or
CHAP. I have an external modem connected via /dev/modem it works fine
for minicom however i cann't seem to get it working with a chat script.
It seems to keep waiting for an initail "OK" from the modem however it
doesn't recieve it. I tried the ppp-up and ppp-down scripts floating
around for RedHat 5.1 but can't seem to get them working as I would
like. Would it be better to use ip-up.local and ip-down.local? I am
fairly new to linux but have been learning fast. Thanks for all the help
so far.

Seems you want a Linux server running Samba. This can be set up quite
easily and works very well--I run a small network including Samba at
home, and I am not a computer professional. For a small network, in
addition to your windows computers, each with a network card, you
need a hub with at least as many ports as the number of computers on
your network (~$80 for an 8-port hub) and a PC to be converted into
your Linux server, also with an Ehternet card.
You may want to have a look at my homepage, it explains some
of the Samba basics:
http://www.magma.ca/~bklimas/FAQ.htm#samba_setup
If you have more specific questions or problems ask here again.
Hope this helps. Newbie here. Best regards,
b.k.

Hello All,
I'm trying to setup a Linux server using Red Hat 5.2. This server has
Samba running, authenticating Windows 95/98 and Windows NT 4
Workstation/SP4 and sharing some folders. Samba works fine, but to
handle Windows NT logons I had to upgrade the samba package that comes
with Red Hat 5.0 to Samba 2.0.x.
To authenticate Linux machines on network I'm using NIS. NIS logon on
clients works fine.
To Linux clients see the folders shared by Samba they can mount the
Samba shares using smbfs, but smbmount do not allow users other than
root to mount them and common users will never have the root password!
Anyone knows how to do that?
Another way was export the same folders shared by Samba using NFS, what
I really don't like because I think Samba has it own locking mechanism.
But was the only way to common users mount them.
Using NFS brought me another problem on client side. When I do an ls
inside the NFS mount point, I see the right files' owner and group, but
when I create a new file, its owner and group now is 65534 because nfsd
uses an uid and gid -2 (anonymous). How can I tell nfsd to use the
correct owner and group?

Hello. I just got Dial-on-Demand working(using pppd). I have one problem,
however. As soon as I turn pppd on-- ready to dial-on-demand(pppd
:207.50.128.2), it automatically dials out, even though I have 'demand' in the
options file. It is clear to me, that some process is forcing it to dial out.
These are the processes currently running(including me actually telnetting
into the machine(local ethernet) to get this).

I can get it to wait to dial(not sure how I do it-- some combination of
killing processes), it will dial on a simple route -n. I didn't think it
would-- should it? A TCPDUMP on either PPP0 or ETH0 both provide silence... :(
Can anyone please help me on this? It's not vital I get it working at
home(this instance), but I really need to get this working at work for our
Linux ISDN router. Please Email me your answers to this if possible(both in
this NG and Email if you'd like), as I can't always access this group when I'd
like to. Thanks for your help!
P.S. Be sure to take the 'NOSPAM' out of the Email address when replying.

I just setup a linux box at home. It's a little shaky right now, but my
biggest problem is connecting to the internet. My school acts as an ISP,
when I run a ppp-on supplied by a proffesser the modem dosn't even dial
out. if I use minicom to try and connect, it connects, but the "welcome"
script runs incredibly slowly.
I've got a p75 with a 33.6 cardinal modem.
I'm enjoying the stability linux provides (not a crash yet in two
weeks), but if I can't get this connection working I'll have to go back
to W95. can anybody help me?

The little I know about C2, Linux should implement permition to a specific user,
like NT, not only owner, group and others. With some work, creating specific
groups, you can do the same, but it's a "work around"...

Subject: Can serial port go faster than 155200?
Date: Sun, 7 Mar 1999 12:37:37 -0500
Hi all,
I have a couple of linux boxes connected via a ppp link through a couple
of BitSurfr-pro. It works fine, but the top transfer speed achieved is
aprox.
11.1 Kbps which seem to match the serial ports that are set to 115200 bps
(spd_vhi). Can the serial ports of both machines be increased in some way
in order to benefit from the BitSurfr-pro's compression? In other words, is
155200 bps the top speed a serial port can be set under linux at the
present time?
Any help appreciated

Ah yes, so what could be wrong in "arman"'s kernel ? The ifconfig
error suggests that there is a dummy driver in the kernel, but at
the same time there is a module loaded as well - i wonder if that
is at all possible. -job

Do you think there should be a time limit for `ident' requests?
For example, we could say that we drop the transaction if it hasn't
completed in a few weeks, even if this is not strictly correct.
Occasionally i find some process left around from some time ago,
presumably cut off by a network problem, or something. Then i kill it.
I don't think these things will ever go away on their own.
Is this fixed in some new version? I'm using RH 5.1.

This is part of your problem, the NIC is using the BNC port, but
you are connected to the RJ-45 port. You need to use the 3COM DOS setup
utility to change this to use the 10BT port. I suspect the rest will
fall into place after that -- I assume you have already checked for IRQ
conflicts and such.

Hi Joseph,
I am trying to setup something smiliar: five Linux boxes on a T1
connection. Did
you get any replies yet? Try checking out the following web-site for
Linux specific
routers:
http://www.linuxrouter.org
There is a news archive there and I found a lot of info there...

Your kernel will need to be compiled with IP-Masquerading. Use ipfwadm -
cunsult the IP-Masquerading MINI-HOWTO for the info.

Subject: TCP/IP through Cable Modem

I have Cox cable modem using @Home service. My NIC card is the famous
3c509b ISA.
I wish to establish my network but it seems to be very difficult. I read
some articles but didn't do any good. One told me to disable PnP mode and I
tried, but I don't see any difference. Actually, in the boot up process, it
says that a NIC is detected at eth0. Now what should I do? I prefer to do
the settings using linuxconf. But I don't know what to do.
I would be so much thankful if somebody can kindly explain the whole
entire step-by-step process in order to establish my network. Please... I'm
an idiot. Thank you very much for reading.
