Subject: depmod -a says ip_masq modules have unresolved symbols ?!
Date: Mon, 08 Mar 1999 23:29:33 -0800
I just installed the 2.2.2 kernel under RH5.2 (version 1.3.8-6 of
ipchains), with all the masquerading options selected as per the IP
Masquerading and IP Chains HOWTOs. The compile appears to have gone
according to plan, without errors. After compiling the kernel, I did
make modules and then make modules_install and rebooted. During the
boot messages, I saw a message about unresolved symbols for several of
the ip_masq modules (loaded from rc.local).
I did depmod -a and it looks like I have unresolved symbols for every
ip_masq module. At the bottom of this message is the output from a
depmod -ae for those that are interested. I have no idea what's causing
these unresolved symbols, or even where to look. I tried moving all the
.o files in /usr/src/linux/net/ipv4 somewhere else and doing make
modules and make modules_install a second time, but I still get the
unresolved symbols.
How do I fix this?
I'd really appreciate it if you could email your answers to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] as well as posting back here, as my news service is
questionable at best.
Much thanks!

Most likely it means that your local mailer specification in
/etc/sendmail.cf is wrong. Locate it (Mlocal line), find
local mailer path P= .
Usually it means that FEATURE(local_procmail) is needed
in your *.mc file (the file used to generate sendmail.cf)

I haven't finished configuring my samba config yet but I do know that ping
has nothing to do with whether or not samba is running. Ping simply has to
do with TCP/IP. Most servers have a service running which responds to a
specific type of TCP/IP packet. Samba, uses a protocol (developed my
Microsoft long ago) to talk to windows machines. It is only a coincidene
that this protocol is running over TCP/IP.

have a look at hosts.allow and hosts.deny (man hosts.deny, man hosts.allow).
You can deny all ports on from all adresses except local ones, bu allow any
address to connect to you www server on the ports you allow.
There is also a program called sentry that will check for port scans etc, and
can automatically deny attacking addresses by puting them in the hosts.deny.
A firewall will offer added protection.

Subject: Automating dns/nis update
Date: Tue, 09 Mar 1999 11:11:01 +0000
Hi,
Hi,
I am currently trying to write a script that will automate adding new
hosts to our dual NIS/DNS environment.
I have completed a menu based script that asks the operators ..
1) To which domain they want to add ?
2) What is the new hostname ?
3) What is the IP address ?
4) What are the aliases ?
It then adds the data to the dns .data file and looks if a .rev file
exists for the domian. If not it creates a new .rev file with the above
info then adds this to the named.conf file.It then updates the serial
number in the .data file to todays date or if already todays date it
increments the version by 1.
A refresh of dns is then performed.
While this works okay I now have to add the NIS part as well and I can
see problems occuring in the future with new domains being added etc.
Is there a tool that exists that can make managing a DNS/NIS environment
easier ? I have seen a few tools like dlint but it seems that is more
for managing an existing dns setup.I am specifically looking for a tool
that can add new hosts to dns without having the operators going and
manually updating the files.

I have exactly the same problem. Card works just fine with the
2.0.36 kernel, but never initializes the link under 2.2.2. Anyone got
any clues as to what changed between the 2.0.36 and 2.2.2 versions?

I've come across this king of messages once in a while. Your modem(pppd) is
trying to negotiate speed/some flags with the other end, and it can't get a
point where both agree. It may be the modem speed... (in my case, it was
always modem speed/ or com->modem speed). Just be sure that your modem
supports (is configured to) the speed that you assign in pppd.
Hope it helps,

If you're trying to login as root, don't. Make a user account to login.
Otherwise..it should work.

I had _similar_ problems - I was able to compile 2.2.2 but could not get it to
work via lilo as I usually do (I've been using and abusing linux since '93 ! by
the way), The exact same Kernel that would not boot from lilo was able to boot
when I copied it to floppy with "cp vmlinuz-2.2.2 /dev/fd0" !!!!
When trying to boot from lilo it stopped after LI, looking at the doco (in
/usr/doc) it explains what the problem is, but it wasn't detailed enough to
help me further.
Try and see if you can boot the kernel from floppy.
PS - as others have asked, did you upgrade all the other packages ?

The linux box has to forward the packets to the 95/98 machine, this should
take a little longer... If it were directly connected, seemed to be about
the same speed as Netscape 4.5 and 4.06 on windows... Seemed about as fast
on Linux...
The IP forwarding is not exactly a small task... An improvement in the
Communication line would help.. If you have a 56K upgradeing to an ISDN
would be helpful... Or going with a cable modem... this would help
tremendously...

Problem..
I have a requirment to install a network that works on the same lines as
the LongView product from
cybex (http://www.cybex.com) and the PC expander
My network configuration is for 4 PC's 3 running windows and 1 Linux,
The PC running Linux
is to be a server and the three PC can view the Linux server via a
xwindows viewer over a normal
hub based network but all the PC's CPU's are in a sucure location but
the monitor, keyboard, com
port, audio inc mic and mouse are on the users desks (distance away from
Secure unit is 5 - 7m).
Although the PC expander is Windows based could anyone sugest an
alternative working
on the same lines but cheaper ?
Many thanks
Matt

Since we're on the topic of VPN....
I'm connecting to the internet with an old Linux box as a router,
using masquerading, forwarding and TOS - pretty cool, really.
I now need to connect behind the company firewall, which uses IPsec
(FW-1), and I'd really like the linux box to handle that - just route
addresses to the internal company net over a VPN connection. Is this
possible, and in particular, is it possible with Linux 2.2?
I really don't want to ditch my ipchains setup and go back to 2.0.36,
although it does look like I have to from all the documentation (while
very good and nicely cross referenced, the docs *could* be a bit
clearer on what kernels they refer to, since there's been a bit of
change there - you listening, John? :-)

Hello
The subject line says it all. This started about three days
ago. I can't remember changing anything. Apart from trying kppp but
/ppp/options etc are unchanged.
Also when a ppp connection is made I am unable to ping bigpond.com my
ISP but I can ping the nameserver 134.134.2.18 My /etc/host file has
two entries
nameserver 134.134.2.18
nameserver 134.134.5.51
Any ideas? I'm a bit miffed at having to use win95 just to get through
to my ISP

Right.

The problem is that there must be a program actually watching over
the serial port the modem is connected to. If the second machine
is running Linux as well, you'll need a modem getty running.
Preferrably mgetty , from the "mgetty+sendfax" package.
Read the docs. Carefully.

a) You will need the isapnptools to get it working
b) Otherwise, turn off PNP on the card (if it provides jumpers)
c) Check "dmesg" for possible resource conflicts
