It very likely means your chat script is not doing what it needs to do
for your particular ISP and the ISP is not running PPP but is running
a text mode program, e.g., a login prompt. The script may be sending
something that's confusing the ISP, sending what the ISP needs but out
of sequence, or need something more to start PPP at the ISP. To mention
a few of the more common things that can be wrong.

I had this same problem, and here's how I fixed it: load up the
ip_masq_ftp.o module. To do this, put the following line in your startup
scripts (/etc/rc.d/rc.local is a good choice):
/sbin/modprobe /lib/modules/<kernel version>/ipv4/ip_masq_ftp.o
Replace <kernel version> with whatever version your kernel is (i.e. 2.0.35).
Note that this allows your LAN machines to connect via FTP directly without
using PASsiVe mode. Apparently, NU 2.0 lets you use PASV mode, while NU 3.0
does not. (A side effect of this is that if you want to FTP into your Linux
box, you have to use PASV mode.) Make sure you either execute this command
manually or reboot your Linux box for this to take effect.

I don't know what your problem IS, but I can tell you what it ISN'T. :)
I have a 386/8mb RAM/no hard drive running Linux Router Project (find it
at http://www.linuxrouter.org) as my gateway to my cable modem, and I
get
very high speeds from my Windows box. I use Netscape...Have you tried
a late version of Netscape in Windows? In fact, what version of IE are
you using?
One thing to check is DNS setup in both machines. Find out what DNSs
the linux box uses, and what order it checks them in, then use that
in Windows. Then, make sure that Windows is setup with what info the
cable company provided for Domain Suffix Search Order (set this in
the TCP/IP properties for Windows). I don't know if this applies to
people without cable modems, but it seems to make a lot of things
work better with.
Also, try tweaking the MTU and MRU settings on the Linux box.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello,
I've been working on this for about 3 days now, and have finally
decided to seek outside help.
I initially began trying to get PPP working in plain linux,
RedHat 5.1 using PPP-2.3.3, but after configuring the scripts, setting up
everything correctly (as far as i could tell) i would run ppp-on script
(after making it executable), the computer would think for about 1/2 a
second, then nothing further would happen, no errors about bad commands, no
sound of the modem clicking, nothing. I waited for about a minute after
issuing the command, but nothing ever happened. I decided to take the
easier route and tried configuring through Xwindows. Following all the
instructions i found in a xwindows ppp setup guide i found on the official
redhat site, i configured everything once again, setting the modem to ttyS2,
giving it the proper init strings, etc... after doing all this, i clicked on
the "activate" button. Waited about 30 seconds, and once again, absolutely
nothing happened.
I have managed to establish a connection with my isp using
minicom, so i am positive that the modem is working properly, and i have
gone through the steps of the PPP configuration guide that i found about 10
times, redoing every single one exactly as it says to do.
I am using a USR 56k faxmodem (not a winmodem), running RedHat
5.1.
If anyone can provide assistance, i would be very grateful.
Please respond by e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Subject: Help with rogue route
This is not a Linux problem but it is a network problem and I need the
help of someone in the NYC area.
Last week I was diagnosing a problem with access to www.wsj.com from
inside our corporate firewall. As part of this I pinged the remote
site from my workstation inside the firewall whilst watching the
packet traffic outside the firewall with a GN sniffer. Tcpdump showed
me that the ICMP requests and replies were coming back to my
workstation inside the firewall but the sniffer only saw the outgoing
request -- the echo reply was coming back via a a route that bypassed
the company Internet connection. The connection here is supposed to
be the only gateway to the Internet for the entire organization. we
were once a subsidiary of EDS and I suspect an EDS router has not been
updated and is advertising a route it should not have.
Here is a traceroute from my workstation to www.wsj.com:

This appears to leave the UUnet network in New York.
I e-mailed the webmaster at www.wsj.com last week for help but he/she
has not yet responded. Is there someone out there in the NYC area who
can do a traceroute to my workstation (cypci319.ugsolutions.com
--134.244.50.249) and e-mail me the results? It would be especially
valuable if you peer directly to UUnet but that might be too much to
hope for :-)

I would use Samba, instead. Using lpd means making the NT/95 boxen need
to "talk" unix. Using samba means making the linux box "talk" netbios.
With samba, the linux machine shows up on the network neighbourhood of
the NT/95 boxen. You can share printers, directories, "home directories",
etc.
Your distribution should come with some version of samba. You can get the
latest one from www.samba.org.

Use multiple layers:
1. In /etc/inetd.conf disable all services you don't want to provide, then
restart the inetd daemon by running "killall -HUP inetd".
2. Set up tcpwrappers to only allow the access you want.
3. Set up firewall rules to only allow the traffic you want.
Think "Defense in Depth".

FYI - This patch (at the first URL you gave) is for the 2.0.33 kernel; later
kernels already have this patch applied.
However, on my system (2.0.35), it's still losing the very first packet when
a client tries to send something. But if the client sends more packets
between the time the first one is sent and the time the link is up, those
packets get correctly rewritten and are sent off just fine. It's still that
very first packet that causes the link to come up that isn't rewritten. Any
ideas?

When I was on cable, I had a *lot* of probes. Now that I'm on ADSL with a
different ISP, things are better. The fact that all @home cable modem
users are on the 24.0.0.0/8 network means that people who are scanning
just have to target 24.0.0.0/8 and they will probably get good hits (i.e.
open ports on machines).
I think it's just a fact of life on the @home network.

SYN cookies (if I remember correctly) are cryptographic challenges to
the SYN packets sent by a host. If the host doesn't reply with a
proper checksum response, they are ignored. But apparantly this option
can confuse some socket implimentations, causing legitimate hosts to
be rejected. However, I've been running kernels with SYN cookies for
as long as I can remember, and I've never had any problems.

Port 113 is where your identd lives. Web, ftp, telnet and IRC are
examples of protocols that often request ident responses. They're
simply asking, "Which user on your machine is requesting this data?"
As for the telnet attempts, you got me. Maybe your class c is included
in a wingate scanner or something.
Email me if you have any more questions.

I recently ran across a strange error from telnetd. When trying to telnet
from our university's dial-up server (non-ppp), I was unable to connect to my
debian linux machine. It appeared to make the connection, however nothing was
displayed and the connection simply hung. The following message appeared in
my syslog:
telnetd[25068]: tloop: peer died: Invalid or incomplete multibyte or

This is rather annoying and I have been unable to fix it or determine exactly
what was wrong. Several users depend on being able to make this connection
so I'd like to be able to figure it out. If anyone might have any ideas about
how to fix this problem, I would be most appreciative.
Thanks,

Sorry about the delay, tonni.
My one way cable modem is an external (there are internal ones?)
produced by Hybrid.
The model is N-202XS.
Thank you very much in advance!

Try the driver ne or ne2k-pci. Run netconf, basic host information,
Adaptor 1, Kernel module

Hi,
Read on ethernet-HOWTO. There is a section explaining how to configure 2
ethernet card.

Take a look to

There is page about IPX over PPP.

Subject: HOW TO USE DNSa for a NET and DNSb for all the others?
Date: Mon, 08 Mar 1999 18:40:22 +0100
Hi,
I wonder how can I force my linux box to use a certain DNS for a
certain network and another for the remaining addresses.
I mean:
if address is from A.0.0.0
use as DNS A.0.0.1
otherwise
use as DNS B.C.D.E
The problem is that I don't want that a query for a DNS is sent to the
other.
Oh... another thing I already have a cache-only DNS running on the linux
server.
Thanks in advance,
Stefano Bottigiola.
