Subject: Vmware and Linux
Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 22:16:49 GMT

Hi

If there is anyone using vmware could they answer a few of my
questions, I have a dual boot win98/Linux machine and would like to
know if it is possible to use the existing win98 partition in a vm or
if I have to install another copy of Windows as the instructions seem
to imply.

I have Linux running on a spare 1gig disc and there is no room to
install another copy of Window, if it works out OK I will install
Linux on a bigger drive and run Win98 in a vm but want to try it out
first before reorganizing my discs.

I have downloaded a 30 day trial of the program but don't see any
obvious way of doing what I want from the help files.

Thanks for any help.

Tried it, and with xonxoff specified instead of crtscts, no change...

Thanks but...! :)

Before someone asks, tcpdump doesn't show anything interesting; just
keeps retrying if e.g. I ftp somewhere...

Depends on the hub, some have a switch or a dedicated port that handle's the
pin switching.

I'm using RH 5.2 Kernel 2.0.36

I have a Nic on both machines but only one cd-rom. I dual-boot Win98 and
Linux on main system and want to install linux on my second system via
crossover cable (486/66, 16MB, 540MB-HD, NE2000 Compatible NIC). I don't
have any type of networking set up yet. What type installation or how do I
install linux on my second machine.

I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to enable NFS. I have added the ip of
the client machine into the servers /etc/exports file. I have tried about
every variation of mounting the nfs directory that the how-tos have
mentioned. And all I get is an error saying permissions denied from server.
I am stumped. my /etc/exports reads one line

/mnt/shared 216.133.209.30(rw)

the mount commands I was trying was

mount -t nfs APACHE:/mnt/shared /mnt/shared2
mount -o rsize=1024,wsize=1024 APACHE:/mnt/shared /mnt/shared2

APACHE is the nick for baybiz.net the server & both /mnt/shared &
/mnt/shared2 were created on the respective machines
Plus the permissions were set to 777 just in case.
This is driving me mad. I have done this with slackware w/ no problem. I
am using RH6 now. What could be the problem. Please reply to

You need to check that ip forwarding is enabled in the linux box:
cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
should return '1'. If not
echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
in your /etc/rc.d/rc.local script should handle this.
Then you need a default route from your ethernet to your Internet
connection
whether it be eth1 or ppp0 or whatever - 'man route' for details.

Lastly, do all your Win9x machines on your local net have valid
Internet addresses ? If not you will have to set up ip-masquerading
so that the win9x machines can appear to have your dynamic ISP-provided
IP address;
read all about it at
http://metalab.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/mini/IP-Masquerade
And finally the win9x things need to have the IP address of the ethernet
card on the Linux box on their net as their default gateway, and
a valid DNS machine address set up in their network config.

Good luck.

try 'ipx_interface delall'
and restart all the interfaces manually, leaving out the net
address parts (the last part of your command lines) so that
ipx can listen for the net addresses itself. Also try with different
frame types as some of the nets may use something other than 802.2.

if that doesn't help post the contents of
/proc/net/ipx_interface
/proc/net/ipx_route

I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to make mars_nwe work on my Redhad
6.0 system, with a 10 mb Ethernet network and a working "real" Novell
3.12 server.

Sometimes I get dozens of megabytes of this error message logged into
/var/log/mars_nwe.log:

{date,time} NWS 0 0:t_error:Cannot assign requested address
t_rcvudata !OK

Does anyone know what this error means?

Also, does anyone know which line in /etc/nwserv.conf controls the
logging of this message? (I've set all of 100-106 to "1" except
for 104.)

as root, run
linuxconf
click on basic host info
click on adapterX
fill in required information (use the tulip driver)
click accept
click accept changes
read any error messages in the log
