Although I'm a real Linux freak I would advice you to purchase a "low"
range cisco for this trick. It is a bit easier to configure and maintain
and it does'nt need that much power! A PC has turning parts wich sooner
or later need to be replaced.
(Though Linux can broadcast default gateway address and IP addresses
through DHCP). It won't and will never give WINS addresses since that is
M$ abuse of the DHCP protocoll. Cisco uses the abusive SHCP protocoll
also.

Usually, tunneling is used for different applications :-)
As far as I understand, you can (hypothetically, of course) read
babylonstation's web pages from rebelbase. If this is the case,
httptunnel might do for you - have a look at Freshmeat:
http://www.freshmeat.net
afaik, the latest version is 1.94. Hope it helps (I havn't
tried it myself...),

They are in /usr/doc/ppp-2.3.5 see below.
Generic info for RH 5.2. Assumption: you installed PPP.
===================================================================
RH puts ppp scripts in /usr/doc/ppp-2.3.5
Copy ppp-on, ppp-on-dialer, options to /etc/ppp.
BTW:I have copied /dev/null to options.
These need to be made execuitable. Execute chmod 755 on ppp-on
and ppp-on-dialer
===================================================================
Modify ppp-on by editing the following:
TELEPHONE, ACCOUNT, PASSWORD
==================================================================
For exec command. put in correct device probably
cua1 (for RH5.2) and modem speed
===================================================================
Edit /etc/resolv.conf and put in ISP nameserver given you by your
ISP.
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
You usually get two from your isp.
====================================================================
execute ppp-on & and monitor logs with
tail -f /var/log/messages.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
OR:
Control Pannel: Modem configuration. Select
correct device. (used in ppp-on script)
===================================================================
Control Pannel: Network Configurator: Routing: Defaults blank
PPP0 will use this so needs a blank here.
===================================================================
Network Configurator: Names: insert ISP
nameserver addresses.
===================================================================
System Configurator: PPP/SLIP/PLIP: Configurations, Add
Fill in Hardware, Communication. Assumes PAP not
required - If things do not work check with ISP.
==================================================================
Save quit. Verify /etc/resolv.conf has your ISP
addresses.
==================================================================
The linuxconf sets up most things but does not
setup the ppp-on script - that must be done by hand.
==================================================================
Testing:
cd /etc/ppp
execute ppp-on
Ping locally between your network machines to insure your ok.
Ping some net address by ip number like 10.220.10.120. Once ppp
is connected.
Verify your name server working, ping boston.com or do an
nslookup microsoft.com
When not dialed in ping someother box locally by name
to insure yor local resolution is working say if
done by the /etc/hosts and /etc/lmhosts.
=============================================================
If things do not work turn on debugging or up the level of
debugging. Edit the scripts and put debug 7 in there.
For LCP errors two common causes are the ISP is not responding
to you - he's down or you and the ISP are out of sync on PAP.

Wrong step. Above is something you should have done. If you don't do it,
accessing services on your machine from local client may cause a
connection created do to the reverse lookups.

No the other one. According to your qouted config line you'll get the IP
assigned dynamicly, so you'll probably have to use a dummy IP for the
ppp-Interface aslong as you are not connected. Add this to your hosts
files. Additionally it's a good idea to restore this address after
hanging up. Sorry but I am not familiar with the new demand-dialing
feature of pppd 2.3.5. I can only speak from the corner of an ISDN user
running ipppd.

It was not intended as a suggestion to run diald but as hint that you
might have to listen on a different interface if you use it.

What is the ip address of your linuxbox and network mask?
And what is the ip address on your Windows box and netmask?
I don't see in this table how the kernel knows what device it should use
to get to network 192.168.1.0 it says it's a class C network
(netmask-255.255.255.0) but it doesn't say gateway 192.168.1.1 for
instance that's very strange.
When configured right it should'nt give any problems. I have setup
several hunderds of Linux and Windows systems without a single IP
problem.

on my pc.
eth2: status: type 3, closed 0, maxfrs 3800, prot=1, spec=2000

I have changed cables and MAU ports with no success in beating this.
Can someone direct me where to find some explanations as to what this

Subject: oops: routing only one-way ?
Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 17:34:27 GMT
Hi group,
please forgive me if I'm wrong here but I am not reading c.o.l.n on a
regular basis and didn't find anything helpful in the FAQs/DejaNews during
a quick research.
There's a nice little but horribly annoying problem: My SuSE Linux 5.2
won't act as a router properly. eth0 and eth1 are set up fine, routing
table is ok (very simple, two class C networks, no RFC1819 but really
officially assigned ones). Datagrams from the "internal" subnet (eth0)
*are* being routed to the "public" subnet (eth1). According to tcpdump,
even the answers (e.g., ping ICMP echo replies) arrive with correct IP
addresses at the public eth1. But, however, they do not appear on the
internal eth0 where the destination hosts is waiting for it. How can that
be ??? IP_FORWARDING is on, masquerading and firewalling disabled as well
as not compiled into the kernel (have done this explicitly just to be sure
but didn't help anyway).
So there's nothing but the silly kernel ;-) in between that could block it
all. Confusingly, it routes datagrams to outside but doesn't let answers
in again...
Any comments what I could go after would be greatly appreciated !
Thanks, Tom.

For whatever reason, the ppp0 entry isn't in my routing...if I route add
default ppp0, it shows up and all is well for that dialup session with KPPP
or minicom or whatever.... My eth0 and localhost addresses and routes both
show as expected and are fine...my ip for eth0 is fixed for a direct T1
connection and I'm planning on using the modem with diald as a fail safe
back to the server. Curently, I'm just dialing and surfing as I d/l dox and
config the machine...it's offline at the moment hence this Win32 mail...
I'm not sure what to do to make ppp0 a permanent route config. I have used
linuxconf and thought that would ot it but it didn't...of course, I could be
doing something wrong as well...
Thanks

By definition the loop back is 127.0.0.1 127.0.0.0 means the whole network, as does
192.168.48.0 DFIU by using route adds and deletes.

No, it is not 'correct', but if it works, who am I to judge. Use the redhat control
panel and edit the ppp interface. Check the box marked 'make default route' (or
something similar). There was a bug evident in RH 5.1 (don't know if it propagated
to 5.2), where defining two default routes would render the route command useless.
You would know this not only by no traffic being routed, but by typing route, and
getting nothing. If you have this problem (sounds like you do) then add somewhere
in the ppp script process a route delete default. MAKE SURE that you defined the
pppX interface to assume default routing. Also, of course, don't delete the default
route after it has been established as pppX.
BTW, 'route add default pppX' should be enough.
PS, the X in pppX is probabbly 0 (zero), as evidenced by your route output.
Hope this helps, and happy computing.

I've got a Redhat 5.0 box running nfs-server 2.2beta37 and all Redhat
related updates. I'm mounting some exported filesystems to AIX
4.3.2. The exports mount OK, but every so often, the nfsd crashed
without so much as a core. Or I get NFS write errors. Since I have
the same filesystem exported to other hosts that don't get the error,
and if I don't mount the export to the AIX 4.3.2 system (4.2.1 works
fine) I can only assume it's somthing specific to AIX 4.3.2 and
Linux. How can I debug this without a core file? The nfs debugging
options don't seem to work either... (nfsd --debug {class})...

Hi,
depending of you linux distribution, you can try the command "netconfig" (slak)
or netcfg (rh).
That way, you'll be able to add your gateway...the reason why you can't access
outside the LAN.

Subject: Re: How many telnet users supported per bandwidth?
Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 23:02:41 +0100
We have a customer that uses our vetrinary software over a 64Kb/sec ISDN
line via a Cisco and they have about 7 sessions without any real delays.
Though print jobs take down the performance!
But it also depends on how efficient the application is written. If you
only update the changed places than you save a lot off bandwidth. If you
just redraw your complete screen than your bandwidth is scares!
We have a pretty efficient ASCII system and well I guess in normal use
we can even handle 12 to 15 user simultaniously.

Subject: ethertap not working
Date: Wed, 10 Mar 1999 22:41:38 GMT
I need some help getting started with the ethertap driver. I'm using 2.2.2
on one machine and 2.2.3 on another and have the same problem on both. The
kernel seems to be compiled properly with ethertap as a module.
# insmod ethertap
succeeds. Also:
# ifconfig tap0 192.168.1.1
# ifconfig tap0
tap0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr FE:FD:00:00:00:00
inet addr:192.168.1.1 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
Interrupt:5
# ll /dev/tap0
crw-r--r-- 1 root root 36, 16 Mar 10 13:14 /dev/tap0
My code:
const char* tapdevice = "/dev/tap0";
fprintf(stderr,"connecting to ethertap device %s...",tapdevice);
int tap = open(tapdevice,O_RDWR);
if (tap==-1) {
fprintf(stderr," failed(%d)\n", errno);
return -1;
}
fprintf(stderr," %d\n", tap);
when compiled and executed, yeilds:
connecting to ethertap device /dev/tap0... failed(19)
Error 19 is device not found, right? /var/log/messages contains:
Mar 10 15:37:11 eeyore modprobe: can't locate module char-major-36
What's wrong with this? I'm doing my best to follow what documentation
I could find, but it doesn't work. Could someone with code please post
it. Thanks.
Chris.
