What exactly do you want to do?
You can look at Control Pannel first box Run Level editor which does
some of what your asking. The detail as you know is done under
/etc/rc.d. You can put in echo's in there to see just who's executing
and how far and what branches. It will do alot of echoing depending on
where you put the echo's as some things loop but if put in something
small like echo 1 echo 2 etc you an track what's getting executed even
if you can't figure out the code.
  It seems like your looking to do networking - Look at
/usr/doc/NET-3-HOWTO. There may be doc for you on your system if you
installed the Network Administrators Guid and System Administrators
Guide see /usr/doc/LDP/....

Have you configured your /etc/smb.conf? See SMB-HOWTO and read the doc
in smb.conf. You need to match engcryption with NT - yes is ok. You
need passwords see man page for smbpasswd its simple.
Mess with smbclient to insure it gets what the doc says see man
smbclient.
  The linux icon on NT is good - with the above and filling out the
smb.conf you'll be able to browse at will the linux box in explorer.
   After you get that cranking you can smbmount the NT drives on linux
as use them as Linux drives.

Are you really sure that you have pppd 2.3 path 5 or higher?
Since this only occurs with 2.2.x kernels and lower revisions of the
pppd. Doesn't the system startup a old pppd instead?

It sounds like what you need is IP masquerading. The details of how to do
this have changed from kernel 2.0.x to 2.2.x; the former used ipfwadm and
the latter uses ipchains. There's a beta of an ipchains HOWTO at
http://www.flounder.net/ipchains/ipchains-howto.html which you may find
helpful. You do need to select certain compile-time options for the kernel
to get this to work. Once it is working, you'll be able to use any machine
on your internal network as if it were on the Internet as a whole for most
functions (e.g., sending e-mail, web browsing, ftp clients, etc.), though
a few functions don't yet work via IP masquerading (notably server
functions and a handful of others).

I'll take a stab at this.

On win95 box go to settings>internet>connection tab. turn off 'connect to the
internet as needed'. This should be all thats needed, unless you have some other
fatal configuration flaw. Keep reading, though.

Make sure that both boxes have IP addresses on the same network. You probably
should be using the non-routable (on the public internet) reserved class C address
of 192.168.1.1-254. I personally put the linux box at 192.168.1.1, and the Winbloze
boxes at several point increments, like 192.168.1.5. MAKE SURE THE NETMASK IS ALSO
THE SAME. For the above example, the netmask should be 255.255.255.0
In your windows directory there is a file called hosts.sam. Copy this file to
hosts. Following the format of this file (it is fairly self documenting) put the
ip address of your linux box and the name you gave it (e.g. lordofalldomains.com).
Lastly put a nickname on the same line as the address and human readable name. This
nickname is what you will use to get to the linux box.  I use the nickname 'linux';
short, sweet, and directly on point. Note, the hosts file is not necesarry either,
but typing TELNET LINUX is easier then typing the address every time.

I have assumed that you have TCP/IP installed and bound to the NIC with a static IP
address. If you don't know what that last sentence means, get the hell out of the
linux group and head over to a windows group. No offense, but it means there is
some needed groundwork not covered on your part.

If this does not work, repost with specific information and steps you have tried.

I start a big download, then go to the console and type "pppstats -w 10".
After the first entry, you'll get a nice current speed of your PPP transfer
rates.

Hello !!!

I'm trying to smbmount our NT Server but I'm always getting this:

[root@linux /mnt]# smbmount //NTS/Razvoj nts/
Password:
smb_dont_catch_keepalive: server->data_ready == NULL
mount error: Invalid argument
Please look at smbmount's manual page for possible reasons

What could be the problem? The strange thing is that I can mount all the
other machines in our network all running Windows 9*.

Can someone help?

It is not strange that you can't "ping" to any other system behind your
Linux system. That is what "MASQUERADING" is about. Only showing the
"gateway" machine to the internet and the rest is hidden. Try removing
masquerading. If that doesn't work, you can alwaus use rinetd to do
"port-forwarding"

I am using a Linux system (2.0.33) as a router with 3com 509 and Dec Tulip NIC
cards. It is using ipfwadm with many,many rule entries ( more than 500) under
heavy network load. About once a week I get a system crash and the message
"could'nt get a free page" displayed on the console. It seems that the network
traffic just gets to be too much for the kernel. Is there a way that i can
track the available free pages and tune the kernel to have more? If anyone can
offer any clues on how to correct this problem I would be very grateful. I'm
losing sleep over this one.

Hi C,
Thanks for the quick response. Although I know Unix well, I am new to
Linux.
So, how do I go about solving this problem?

I have not installed any ethernet (although I have a network card in the
m/c).
I might have a misconfigured ppp script. I first configured ppp from linux
conf. It was named ppp0. I has having trouble connecting thru it. So, I
configured a ppp1 using control-panel.  I had trouble activating it.  So I
deleted ppp0 and tried again. No luck. How to check for misconfigured
scripts.

I do not know what mingetty is?

If you wanna connect your Linuxbox via RS232 to the SCO server you, then
you can use mincom (do you rember telix well this is the Unix version).

When you have a LAN then you can just telnet to the SCO server

Making the 2.2 kernel is no problem downloading it on the other hand
taked a bit since the sources are 12MB.

You really should'nt wait for a distribution with the 2.2.x kernel in
it. Just doewnload it untar it to the /usr/src directory and setup a
symbolic link from taht points from /usr/src/linux to
/usr/src/linux-2.2.2 (depending on the dir name).
Or just rename the directory to linux (not advicable). And then make the
new kernel.

I had the same decision, and decided to go with a 4-port hub. Although both
machines are currently next to each other, for learning, I'll eventually move
one of the machines to another room. The hub makes that easier, particularly
if I play musical rooms. Now, wiring the rooms for this is another problem.

Did you put the hostnames in /etc/hosts?

Subject: NIS or better ypserv 1.3.6 doesnt't work
Date: 10 Mar 1999 18:27:18 GMT

Hello *,

i just installed a brand new suse 6.0 distribution and now im trying to get nis
working.
suses nis server (1.2.4) looks a little bit outdated ;) so i compiled ypserv-1.3.6,
ypbind-mt-1.4 and the yptools-2.2.

ypserv starts without any problems and ypbind connects to it:

[Welcome to the NYS YP Server, version 1.3.6 (with tcp wrapper)]
ypproc_domain_nonack("lxkurs.lrz-muenchen.de") [From: 129.187.10.231:1142]
connect from 129.187.10.231
        -> OK.

now if i do a ypcat passwd i get the following:

/var/yp# ypcat passwd
yp_all: clnt_call: RPC: Timed out
No such map passwd.byname. Reason: Internal NIS error

while the server log says:

ypproc_all_2_svc(): [From: 129.187.10.231:844]
                domain = "lxkurs.lrz-muenchen.de"
                map = "passwd.byname"
        db_open("lxkurs.lrz-muenchen.de", "passwd.byname")
                ->Returning OK!
Opening: lxkurs.lrz-muenchen.de/passwd.byname (0) 805a9c0
ypdb_close() called
connect from 129.187.10.231
Found: lxkurs.lrz-muenchen.de/passwd.byname (0)
         -> First value returned.

thats all it does :((

a makedbm -u gives me a few lines of the passwd.byname map then results in a
segmentation fault.
so i tried suses makedbm which shows me the content of the maps correctly. rebuilding
the maps
doesn`t help, too.

does anybody know where the problem is ?? it seems that ypserv 1.2.4 doesn`t know
about certain features
in /etc/yp.conf so id like to user 1.3.6

thanx in advance

Holger
