Did you read the ppp-howto? It's very helpful, especially with
setting up the script, and even connecting manually.
When you connect manually, you have to connect w/ minicom
and then once you are connected, you exit (without resetting
the modem) from minicom. Then, you run 'pppd' with various
options (this is all spelled out in the howto). It looks
like your setup is almost perfect for using the scripts
from the howto. Make sure your 'options' file is properly
configured though.

1- did you look at the Errata to make sure that your NIC on the Linux box
is supported. (I'm sure the one on the 98 machine is :)
2- assuming 1, do you have link light on both cards?
3- are you sure that y ou have the correct subnet mask on both machines?
4- try pinging to your broadcast and then do an arp -a to see if it sees
the other machine.

Why don't you set up a webserver and use it as addressbook.
Some small perls might be used to let the users edit their
entries by themself (you said it was an internal network)
So any address found is just cut-and-pasted over to whatever
mailtool is used.

It took me less than 5 days to setup my connections, and I was only working
on ppp for about 2 or 3 days. And I got it to work with several numbers,
and two completely different accounts (one uses chap, the other doesn't).

I'm looking into connecting to the Internet via a leased line. This
will terminate in a Paradyne 3162. From there I have two connection
options. I can either:
1) put a special "high speed synchronous card" in the PC and have a
firewall do all the work, or
2) I can use a small router to connect to the leased line and connect
that to the firewall via Ethernet.
Clearly option one is less expensive and so more suitable for a small
account. This is what I'd prefer but I don't know what "high speed
synchronous card's" are available and supported under Linux. Any
advice? I know serial connections can be a pain to set up so it seems
that option 2 would be easier to set up. Since time is money perhaps
option 2 might be viable if it would take too long to set up option
1.

Okay. I've tried all i can think of to keep banner pages from printing after
each print job. It's a big waste of paper and we don't log printer usage
anyway.
I'm using RedHat 5.2, printers set up using the printer config tool; and
YES, I've selected "suppress header". I've even edited the princap to use
various permutations of "sh:" (suppress header).
Printing services are provided through SAMBA 2.0.3, but that is not the
problem- I'm sure it's the printcap file.
Any advice?

i had the same problem, and it seems that you are trying to boot a non-bootable
sector.
so, check your lilo.conf and make sure it boots on /dev/hda, and that /dev/hda
has at least one bootable partition (command a in fdisk if needed).
then, it should work.

It's no variable. It's a RPC function.
ypbind is not able to bind to your NIS Server. Does the directory
/var/yp/<domainname> exist ? Does your host and localhost have
permissions to connect to ypserv ? What das ypbind -debug and
ypserv --debug tell you ?

I struggled with this too. My mistakes were painfully stupid. Hopefully,
yours are too :)
You'll need to use lpd. (SMB is for printing using Samba. I don't know
what NCP is)
As far as the control-panel application. This actually should work for
you. You may want to check two things (that I am ashamed to admit I did
not :)
Make sure the printers name and IP are in the /etc/hosts file.
Make sure you have the spool directory set up.
Incidentally, you may have to fuss with the filter in the control-panel a
little. Look in the bottom right to make sure you're not sending ^M
chars. (I think its ^M... it will be obvious)
Oh, one thing... can you telnet to the JetDirect card? You should do that
to make sure everything is copasetic on the card. It has a default IP
address before you set it up. Sorry... I don't remember what it is :(

NetBEUI is non-routable, and very noisy. It is also unnecessary. Lan
Manager runs over NetBios, which can also run on IP, as well as NetBEUI.

Norse should get you by while you research Babylonian and Finnish
(neat tales, the Fin stuff). THEY should buy you enough to start

the etherexpress is a strange beast that can get wedged on reboot and
its internal cmos setup gets corrupted. Running tcpdump is often
enough to kill it. Find the DOS utility SOFTSET from Intel and run
it this way
softset /bart
and check the irq, connector (best to set it to your real connector
and not use autodetect) and port. WHen you're done turn the machine OFF and
then ON (no warm boot) and things should be better.

I'm getting the following error when using tcpdump under RH5.2 with
kernel 2.2.1
tcpdump: socket: Socket type not supported
I did not have this problem with kernel 2.0.x.
Is there anyhing special that I should have included when I compiled the
kernel?
Or is this because of some kernel changes that tcpdump does not know
about?
In what file are the socket errors defined?

Is the Intel Ether Express PRO/10+ (ISA) supported by RH
Linux 4.1 (kernel 2.0.27)? The HOWTO says the Ether Express PRO/10
is already included in the early 1.3.x kernels but I couldn't set it
up on my system. I am wondering whether I should keep trying or buy
a new card or upgrade the kernel.
If this help, the card uses Intel S82595FX chip.

Well, shut my mouth, so it is. Never assume anything about Microsoft. You
think they install something because its necessary, and then look where it
gets you. Thank you for blasting my assumptions out the window.
Incidentally, the wireless connection connects my office to my home
(office?) so I would like to have all the niceties I get with a dial-up
account from there. Plus the ability to move anywhere across the network.

First, I don't know how much you know about this, but there will be no
physical device called /dev/eth0. The ethernet interfaces under Linux
are a little different than most other devices.

Build a new kernel with that card selected. Although, RedHat normally
comes with support for all kinds of stuff turned on automatically (as

I simply un-commented the following line
/sbin/modprobe/3c509
in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules, and it works fine.
Try this approach if you're not doing this already.

You can set up sendmail to do both internal and external email, but sendmail
is pretty tough for the beginner (and even sometimes the experienced) to
master. You might want to give qmail (www.qmail.org) a shot because it's
much simpler and easier to set up and maintain.

Hi all,
I really need some help here. I've been hacking away at this with no luck for
long enough.
The system : A 32MB 486-DX4 RH5.1 system with kernel 2.2.4 (and upgraded
nettools etc.) and a eexpres16.
The story so far : A home-network called 172.16.10.x and an ISP network called
192.168.x.x (they use NAT - I'm a cable-modem user). So my Linux gw is
192.168.110.6 (ISP assigned IP) on eth0 and 172.16.10.1 on eth0:0 . All trafic
for the internet must go through 192.168.110.254.
My ifconfig :
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:AA:00:35:72:11
inet addr:192.168.110.6 Bcast:192.168.110.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

Okay.. Now, my prime suspect is the route - so I've tried to keep it simple.
It looks like this :
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface 192.168.110.0
* 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth0 172.16.0.0 * 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0
eth0 default 192.168.110.254 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 eth0
.. And everything works. It's just painfully slow (i.e. downloading from a
client machine)! The ifconfig above is "real-life", i.e. there's not that many
collisions and no errors.
