Hi,

I just installed Linux red hat 5.2 in a machine that had unixware. I had
to change the network card for a 3com (the old card
got damaged). Now when I turn on the machine the hub light does not lit.
The network in linux is configured to use
this card, but I can not use the network.

Do I have to change something in the configuration of the card. I disabled
Plug & Play, but it did not make any difference

How can I check what IRQ and address is the card configured to? Could it
be an IRQ conflict, if so how can I check
in Linux what IRQ and addresses are being used

Any help will be gratefully appreciated

I bought two modems during the past month.

1. Supra Express 56K ISA Non-PNP & No-Winmodem ($108)

It works but I had to return it back to Frys's since it connected to my
work and school with lower than 40K. I always get 31K speed with my
    Cardinal 33.6K modem.

2. SmartLink X2 56K ISA Non-PNP & No-Winmodem($50)

I am getting 50.6K to my office and 48-49k to my shcool.
I am just so happy with this modem and just returned Supra back to
    Fry's.

Where do you buy?

I bought one computer store in Garden Grove CA. I am sure you can find this
kind of products from your local places.

Hello all,

I've gotten IPIP tunnelling to work just fine on kernel 2.0.36...
I've upgraded to 2.2.3 to get some other things to work and now have broken
my tunnelling....

I configure the tunl0 device with a: ifconfig tunl0 10.0.0.1 up
then try to add a route to the other network:

route add -net 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 156.46.xxx.xxx tunl0
(the gw number is the dialed up IP address of the other network)

that was it in the 2.0.36 kernel, now I get a SIOCADDRT: Network is
unreachable

any ideas???

Thanks

Dean Irvin

Subject: NFS - HPUX Client mounts disappear - Linux 2.2
Date: Fri, 02 Apr 1999 21:28:16 +0000

Hello.

I have been working on a problem for the last week that has me very
perplexed. I work in a mixed enviroment using Solaris, Irix, HPUX, and
Linux. Linux is used for all our new servers. We just loaded a server
with Redhat 5.2 and upgraded it to the 2.2.5-ac1 kernel (after trying
2.2.3).

Here is the problem we have started experiencing after moving to the
2.2.x kernels:

The linux box mounts NFS exports from various unix machines including
the HPUX 10.20 machines. We are using nfs-server-2.2beta40 and
am-utils-6.0. When I "cd" into /net/bob it mounts the server named bob
and if I do and "ls" I see "bob" and "bob2" are being exported. I can
"cd" into "bob" and then type "ls" and it seems to work, I "cd" down
another directory and type "ls", still no problem. However, If I type a
few more commands and then type "ls" again, "ls" returns nothing, not
even an error. All the files seem to have disappeared. Strange, so I
"cd" up an directory (/net/bob/bob)and type "ls" and still nothing. I
then try to edit a file I know is there called .xinitrc. That works
fine. I can edit the file and "pwd" works fine, but "ls" doesn't show a
thing.

If I then cd into /net/bob/bob2 I can work in there all day and never
have a problem. This behavior is very repeatable and occurs on every HP
we have. After making sure I had all the correct nfs/am versions on my
linux box, and setting it up to use nfs-server and not knfsd (which I
also tried, but didn't seem to help), I started looking at the HPs. HP
gave me some patches to try (no help). A friend read that trying to set
rsize=8192, wsize=8192 in the HP exports might fix it, that is one of
the only things I have't tried yet.

>From the behvior of the problem, I though that maybe it was the first
mount in the exports file that was experiencing problems, but I killed
that theory by adding /tmp as the first line in exports and the problem
still occured. The other thought is that maybe the first mount
alphabetically is being affected. That is another thing I may try, but
other then these two options, I am out of ideas, and I'm not sure if the
problem is really an HP or Linux issue. It certainly cropped up with the
new linux 2.2.x kernels and I know that there are some new Linux NFS
server issues in the new kernel code, but this is a client thing.

This problem does not occur when mounting non-HPUX machines.

If anyone has any ideas, or knows what is causing this, I would love to
hear from you.

Thanks a lot,
Sean

Are you running a DNS on 192.168.0.1 ? If not, then maybe you need to put
in the proper DNS info here. Since you are using a cable modem, try
putting the DNS values for your cable co ISP in place of 192.168.0.1

Good luck.....took me a while to get working using a similar set up....so
hang in there, it will work....eventually.

P.S
If you already have an ethernet card installed
rename the attached file to: ifcfg-eth1 before copying it.

Sometimes, some newer boards have a menu in the BIOS that allows you to set
the speed of the bus speed and clock rate. One site is
http://thetechzone.com/overclock.htm and there is at least one overclocking
newsgroup. What you basically do is set the bus speed and clock rate to
settings that aren't certified by the manufacturer.

Which is which, IP Forwarding and IP Masquerading. When do you use which
one?

I'm just got my two 3 Com ELink III NIC's installed on an old Vectra. Can't

Anyway, what's the difference between IPF and IPM?

Subject: problem with Tulip card and 2.2.x (NOT 2.0.36!)
Date: Fri, 2 Apr 1999 05:02:33 GMT

I did further debugging and determined that with the same hardware and same
basic kernel config, I can kill the DEC tulip ethernet card with heavy traffic
on the 2.2 kernel series (up to 2.2.5). While the 2.0.36 kernel will NOT show
the same problem...

I connect two linux boxes, both running tulip cards, via a rolled (xover)
cable. both are 100/full modes.

I create a heavy traffic load (ping -s 1000 -f) and after a minute or so, the
activity lights (on the ethernet cards) stops. at this point, the only way to
get this setup back to working is to reboot the 2.2 kernel system. note that
the 2.0.36 system does NOT need to be rebooted - when the 2.2 system comes up
again, all is well and the two systems can talk again.

I then brought the 2.2 system down to 2.0.36 and repeated the experiment. NO
HANGS THIS TIME! the ping flood continued for a long time (looks like it
would continue forever so I killed the test). this definitely points to
either the tulip driver or something new in the kernel.

I was also able to kill the 2.2 system by doing an ftp of a few hundred meg
across this link. about 10% thru the file xfer, the 2.2 system hung. note
that the system -itself- was ok, just the networking (enet) was frozen.

anyone have any ideas? at this point, I CANNOT recommend the 2.2 kernel with
the tulip driver. in no way should this combo be put on the net - a ping of
death could easily kill your box and it will take a hard reset to restore it
;-(

(please help...) ;-)

there some invocation option I don't know about?

The thttpd documentation, including the manpage is pretty sparse.
