Hello,
I'm currenly running RedHat 5.2 on a Sun SPARC Station 1+ and can't seem
to mount any of the Novell Servers under the linux machine.
    I use the following command:

ncpmount -S G12 -U guest -P spring -C /root/tmp

    And it returns the error:

ncpmount: NCP Request returned error code in login
Login denied

I'm using the correct username/password combinations but it still won't
let me mount the directories. Anyone have any idea what I should do?

Thanks in advance

Nope, you need to run named and recompile for IP forwarding and configure
the kernel as a router. You will also want IP Masquerading - sometimes
referred to as IP Aliasing. Actually you could probably get by without the
named running, but hey, why not if your ISP's DNS server goes down and you
are pointed to more than one DNS you will still be able to get out while all
the other users are SOL.

I can't get my windows 98 box to recognize my liuux box. I'm running
redhat 5.2. My smb.conf file is shown below along with a smbclient -L
dump. At one time, my host "brett" appeared in my Network Neighborhood
window, but after rebooting my linux box I can't it to show up again.

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions on what I might try
to find the problem and fix it. My windows 98 and Linux setup is
shown below.

Subject: user validation through firewall
Date: Sun, 04 Apr 1999 00:21:49 GMT

Hello everybody,

I have some problem with a user validation. I have a linux kernel compiled to
support IP forwarding, and IP masquerading. windows95 clients on internal
network (behind of firewall) have non routable IP (192.168.0.*). another side
of linux box is connected to real network. PDC server is also outside of
firewall. every services work fine for windows95 clients except of user
validation. When client from internal network wants to validate on PDC which
is connected outside of firewall it fails.

I am using wins server.
I accepted packets on UDP/TCP 137 138 139 ports to be forwarded
using "IPFWADM" but it still fails. maybe it requires to accept other ports.

even I can see shares and map drives of external computers from internal
network.

can soneone help me to solve user validation problem?
If someone had similar problem and solved it please share your advice.

Thanks in advance

Levan.

After I upgrade my kernel from 2.0.35 to 2.2.5, my Ethernet card can not be
configured any more.

The Ethernet card I have is an Intel EtherExpress Pro 10MPS ISA card. It
was working fine with kernel 2.0.35. After I downloaded the new kernel,
when I do "make config", this card dose not appear in the card list.

I check the source files, there are correct source files corresponding to
this card. Could anyone tells me how to configure the card?

Thank you in advance!

Hi,

do a "cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward". If it says 1, this mail is
useless, if it says 0, it might be the problem. do a "echo 1 >
/proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward"
and try if it works,...

To setup and etherexpress 16 irq, etc download the microsoft drivers from
intel. Int package is a MS dos program called softset. Use it to reprogram
the board.

Same modem on both boxen? Same port speed? IRQ settings check out? Looks

Man. . .This seems like it is going to go on forever.

Well, I've configured the proper files, I've contacted my ISP to find out
whether it uses PAP or CHAP, set that stuff up, and I am still running
into trouble.

The problems come when I invoke pppd to connect to the remote host. Now,
let's assume that my user name is "James Fannin", my password is "passwd",
and the ISP's number is "5555555".

I type:
/usr/sbin/pppd /dev/ttyS1 57600 debug user James Fannin connect
"/usr/sbin/chat -v '' ATD5555555 CONNECT '' ogin: James Fannin assword:
passwd"

This does not work; it prints the pppd help stuff, suggesting I improperly
typed something. I suspect this is because my user name has a space in it,
although I am not certain. When I type only one word in front of "user" my
modem fires up, tries to connect, and I get dropped, which kind of
confirms this theory. Any suggestions or guidance?

Use the scripts. Look in the directory /usr/doc/ppp-*.*.*/scripts and
you'll find a few demo scripts. Copy ppp-on, ppp-off, and ppp-on-dialer
into the /etc directory. Edit ppp-on. All you need to change is the stuff
at the very top, just the telephone number, account name, and password. Add
/etc to your path, and you should be laughing. I gave a painfully long
account of how to do this, including the permissions and setuids that you
need for non-root users to use ppp, a while back. Deja-news could probably
find it. Mind you, *I* could probably find it on my server if I dug around.
If you have trouble, I'll look it up.

The most irritating thing about unix in general is that it has been around
so long in the hands of computer geeks that there is now 18 different ways
to do everything. So you grab one HOWTO file and it says to do this with
these files and it should work. It doesn't, so you grab another HOWTO and
it says to do a totally different thing with totally different files and
somehow that's going to achieve the same end. It drives me nuts. All I
know is that the ppp scripts in /usr/doc/ppp-*.*.*/scripts work for me with
very minimal screwing around.

Whose stack is running on the Pentium? If it's a particularly broken
network stack, it might not be handling things like acks, the source
quench mechanism or the TCP window correctly. That'd cause the fast
Pentium to choke the slow 486 because it's ignoring the "help, you're
flooding me!" indications from the 486.
