Hey...

A few queries... I'm running RH5.2, kernel 2.2.5

NTP doesn't like me all of a sudden:

Apr 5 01:18:05 dogbert ntpd[1137]: ntpd 4.0.92c Wed Feb 24 19:52:58 EST
1999 (1)

Now my ppp0 interface (139.130.55.72) and my eth0 interface
(203.43.63.34) both have active MULTICAST flags, and there is no
firewalling... i think something has broken between 2.0.36 and 2.2.x on
my system at least...

And upon PPP connection I get the following:

Apr 4 17:59:15 dogbert modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-21
Apr 4 17:59:15 dogbert modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-26
Apr 4 17:59:15 dogbert modprobe: can't locate module ppp-compress-24

Any thoughts?

Regards,
Robert

Yes, I believe it does. I have a linux box set up as a IP forwarding
"firewall" to a cable modem, and I have to turn named on in order to
get requests out to the cable ISP's nameserver.

Thanks for the input Mark,

I solved my problem by letting the PDC validate passwords. password server =
<NT Box Name>.

Nobody here suggested this simple method of enforcing encryption, and I
wonder why? It is the easiest to implement and maintain, at least in my
case.

I agree with the previous post. I have some limited experience with Samba,
and this was a big thorn in the side. It was easy to get an NT box to map
to the Linux box, but the smb HOWTO didn't mention anything about smbmount,
and we were stumped until we found it in some documentation. I believe
there is a man page for smbmount.

I am having problems with diald (I think). I have it setup to do my ppp
dial-up and then my masquerade script is run so my other computers can reach
the internet. Everything seems to work fine except 2 things.

1. When I'm not connected to the net, diald dials up my provider about every
20 minutes.
2. When I have been conected for a while, an hour or two, diald seems to
lose control of the modem. It does not disconnect and dctrl, diald-top hang
when run. I have to ctrl-c to get out of them.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Steve

I'm trying to do the same thing at home. In httpd.conf I set the
"servername" option to 127.0.0.1 I get an error message that says "address
already in use. Cannot bind to port 80"

I then set the "listen" option to 127.0.0.1:80. Got a similiar error
message. What am I doing wrong?

Your help is much appreciated.

Subject: BT Speedway ISDN and RH 5.2... still trying... need help!
Date: Sun, 4 Apr 1999 18:39:18 +0100

Hi,

I have progressed a little further in making my BT Speedway card working on
my Linux box.

I downgraded my kernel to 2.0.36 and installed the RPM of the isdn4linux
utils I found at ftp://trollmor.terminator.net

Following various instructions and some scripts on using isdn on RH5.2 and
configuring the Speedway I have managed to get the ISDN modules to load
(using modprobe).

However when I run /sbin/ifup ippp0 I get the following:
Reading ISDN-Konfiguration
EAZ/MSN for ippp0 is 1612256582
Security for ippp0 is on
Dialmax for ippp0 is 5 times.
Hangup-Timeout for ippp0 is 60 sec.
Incoming-Hangup for ippp0 is off
Charge-Hangup for ippp0 is on
Layer-2-Protocol for ippp0 is hdlc
Layer-3-Protocol for ippp0 is trans
Encapsulation for ippp0 is syncppp
ISDN Configuration read from /etc/isdn/isdn.conf.
Setting Dialmode for ippp0 to auto
Setting up network device ippp0
Start ippp-daemon for ISDN device ippp0
Setting ippp0 as Gateway
dialmode setting not in kernel
up: Host name lookup failure
dev: Host name lookup failure

As per usual I am at a loss. Any help would be appreciated.

There is a mini-How-To written for diald. I just saw it last night.
It's with the other mini-How-Tos.

It was last updated in 1996. Of course, I don't think there have
been too many changes in diald for quite awhile. It might be a good
place to start.

i agree., my USR Robotics external sportster 56k works fine w/ my
school's modem, but with my isp I often have the stalling. it's quite
instructive to look at xnetload. I did have some success by playing with
the pppd options (see snapshot from my ppp-on script below)

# the "-vj -bsdcomp" is to solve this odd ^S-^Q-type problem on
# certain MAX type modems at the ISP side.. really annoying.

If you are interested in Unix socket programming and such I would
strongly recommend that you get hold of a copy of the Unix Network
Programming Book by W. Rchard Stevens. While it is not inexpensive it is
well worth the money. There are three volumes in the set but the 1st
would be the one to get.

Bill
PS: While pointed at the Unix Industry it is 100% applicable to Linux.

Greg,

At first glance your supposition sounds plausible but Sync Cards for an
Intel box are really not very cheap at all while good routers can be had
for around $100.00 to $200.00 and give you much more flexibility as
well. Cisco IGS Routers would work well for what you propose as would
3201 series as well.
