Subject: Linux can't boot up
Date: Mon, 05 Apr 1999 13:23:55 +0800
Hi,
I have a strange problem with my Linux 4.2 here. Hope someone can help
me out. I have a RH Linux 4.2 running on a 486-8Meg. It runs, or rather
used to run, ok, until I swapped the h/disk.
What I did was, I disconnected the h/disk (installed with 4.2 linux)
and swapped in a Win95 installed h/disk to test somehting. But, then,
after I put back the Linux h/disk, and boot up, Linux 4.2 doesnt boot up
anymore. As soon as it goes into the "LILO....", the screen shows a
whole bunch of "04 04 04 04 ....".
Anyone knows what is going on, and how can I fix that? Any info is
greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Rgds,

Somehow you accidentally corrupted your LILO boot sector.
boot with a redhat 4.2 floppy.
Pass the argument
mount root = /dev/xdx
during boot to mount your drive then execute lilo again.
x is whatever your hard drive is on.

Subject: RedHat Linux and IP Masquerading

I have Red Hat Linux 5.2 using kernel 2.0.36. I set up IP Masquerading
so that I can access the internet on my linux box and my Microsoft
Windows NT Workstation computer at the same time. I connect to the
internet with a US Robotics 56k modem and the two computers (my linux
box and windows nt box) are connected via 10Mbps ethernet. When I set
everything up I was unable to access the internet so I modified the file
/etc/sysconfig/network and changed "GATEWAYDEV=eth0" to
"GATEWAYDEV=ppp0" and now I am able to access the internet from both
computers. The Windows NT computer seems to receive data slower then the
linux box. Is that normal? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yup...one came with the first release I used. Problems I've had with it
took so long to resolve (time from service pack to service pack seems to
be about 6 months or so) that I gave up.

OK - here I'll admit that I didn't see the word "server" in your
original post - thought you looked after 40+ user machines - should be a
little slower on the <reply> button...but my points are valid where NT
is used on the desktop - a place where MS seems to want it as much as it
wants it in the machine room.

Seen systems subverted - picked up the pieces - you're right, it was
sloppy administration to start with - some of it as a result of the
cotton-batten that MS wraps around the system.

Depends on what's on the mounted filesystems on the drives handled by
that controller. The root filesystem is usually a fatal problem ( although
I have had a system continue running after completely zeroing the root
filesystem ), the rest cause various bits of havoc but you can usually
work around the problems enough to begin repairs. Getting a filesystem on
a dead controller unmounted can be an interesting exercise, but then if
the controller's dead I don't really care about a clean unmount do I?

You don'thave to recompile the kernel, but it usually helps,(allthough
in your case it may not,,your kernel does not have that driver by
default,,I think it was available as a patch,,but don't quote me on
that),,you can DL the driver from
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/ne2k-pci.html
the instructions on how to compile it are at
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/misc/modules.html
the parameters you are using are the default and it should see it
without having to use any special settings, but if you are only running
2.0.34 I HIGHLY reccomend upgrading your kernel to at LEAST 2.2.3 (this
driver started coming standard with kernel 2.0.35) if you decide to take
the plunge into 2.2.x kernel then read this handy dandy little upgrade
check sheet,,it will save you a BIG headache :)
it's at
http://www-stu.calvin.edu/~clug/users/jnieho38/goto22.html
and if this is your first time upgrading a kernel then read the How-to
at
http://www.linuxhq.com/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html
Good luck!!

Using linuxconf I was able to setup for a ppp connection to my ISP.
I'm using RedHat 5.2 and have no local network. When I bring up
Usernet and click on the red button it turns yellow, but often waits
for up to several minutes (not seconds) before the dial up begins.
After dialup there is no problem with establishing the ppp connection.
Any ideas as to what might cause the delay in initiating the dialup?
The modem is a Practical Peripherals PM288MT II V.34. I have tried a
simple ATZ as the init string, as well as the factory recommended
string which is long and complicated. Either way, I get the annoying
delay BEFORE dialing begins.

Hi Andrew,
You're at least the third person I know of with this
particular problem. I haven't heard of any solution
yet, but check out the OpenLDAP web site to see if
they come up with anything. It's at www.openldap.org.
Out of curiosity, what LDAP server software is the
host? If it's other than UMich/OpenLDAP, then that
points to a Netscape problem; I've only heard of the
problem with those servers.

You don't need to recompile the kernel. I just got the same card a
week ago (I also have RedHat 5.1). Start with
cat /proc/pci
to see the io and irq (because you gave the io in an strange format).
In my case the ouput of the above was
Bus 0, device 11, function 0:
Ethernet controller: Realtek 8029 (rev 0).
Medium devsel. IRQ 11.
I/O at 0x6200.
And put the info in /etc/conf.modules in the following way
options eth0 io=0x6200 irq=11
alias eth0 ne
Reboot the machine.

Up to here, I thought you had a complex problem I can't
solve.
>Oddly enough, I CAN Telnet to my ISP's server, but can't ping it....
Then you _can_ telnet? Now things seem clearer. I used
to use Wingate. Unless things have changed in newer versions,
it does not support "ping". Try a ping from your client W95
machine, and see if I'm not right.
Unless you have a desperate need to ping from your
Linux machine, this shouldn't matter. As long as you've
properly set up the proxies on client and server, everything
else should work on your Linux machine (email, browser, etc.).
Ignore the "ping" failure, and carry on; I bet it'll all work.

If it's DNS, things should work using IP numbers rather
than names.

There is nasty trick to these cards:
You have to enable BOTH "PCI NE2000" cards AND "NE2000 Compatible" (under

First of all,,what kind of network card are you using,,if you run an
ifconfig does it show the eth0 device as configured??
since you say your network is configured properly we'll ahve to take
this one step at a time from there:)
next since you can't ping then I have to assume either one of 2 things
1) your net card is NOT set up properly
2) you have an incorrect netmask
next question, is this net card the same one that comcast gave you?
often times they will bind the cards mac address to their system and not
allow any other cards to be used
try running ifconfig and see what is there, also take a look at your
dmesg
(type dmesg |more) and see if there is an entry about the net card being
seen correctly,,
ya can email me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] and I'll help ya best I
can:)

This is not much to go on.
What does your /etc/conf.modules look like? It should have an entry
somethin like:
alias eth0 <driver name>
If not go to linuxconf -> Config -> Networking -> Basic Host Information ->
Adapter 1
Fill in the IP address, Netmask, Net Device (probably eth0), and Kernel
module. I will need to now what 3com card you have to advise what module
(driver) to use.
When you quit you will be asked to activate the new configuration. Say yes.
Now try to ping the address you assigned to eth0.
If that doesn't work. type as root
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network stop
/etc/rc.d/init.d/network start
Some of the 3com (especially the 3c509B) cards are flakey and require a
complete restart to function.

I had the same issue with my tulip.c driver. Also I found that the current
release of the kernel (2.2.5) nor the driver that came with MY card as well
worked. However I did find the newest release of the tulip.c driver, which
solved my issue. Hope it solves yours... the link to the driver is at:
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/tulip.c
version is 0.90
My ether card is a: Linksys Ether Fast 10/100
Compile instructions are of course at the bottom. But I think you knew that :)
Enjoy!
