dhcpcd has a -c option that allows you to specify a "configuration file"
(a shell script, actually) to be run when dhcpcd has received a new IP
address. When it calls you script, is sets the following environment
variables: ROUTER, IPADDR, BROADCAST, NETMASK, etc.
So, change the script that starts dhcpcd to use -c <filename>, and write
<filename> so that it contains ipfwadm commands (or whatever).
Hope this helps.

Here is the command (RH 5.2):

This is working just fine from root, but when I login to a regular

Subject: [Q] PPP connection & linuxconf?
Date: Tue, 06 Apr 1999 17:54:35 GMT
Hi,
I want to set up a PPP connection using linuxconfig. While browsing through
this newsgroup, I got the impression that setting up the connection is easy or
downright hell, depending on the ISP they chose.
Can someone suggest ISP's (accessible in the Chicagoland area) which allow
for simple installation with linuxconfig? I called up AOL and ATT Worldnet.
The first cannot be accessed from a Linux box. The second uses the CHAP
authentication method which is not supported by linuxconf. Moreover, the
instructions for setting up a Worldnet connection involve recompiling the
kernel, etc. I'm a newbie and would prefer not to go through this hassle.
Appreciate any help.
Thanks in advance,
Atul

Those modules are for IPX and Appletalk, which you have likely compiled out
of your kernel. You don't need to worry to much about them in a TCP/IP
network, but as the modules.txt file in the documentation tree of the kernel
source tells us:
You could add these lines as well [to /etc/conf.modules], but they are only
"cosmetic":
alias net-pf-3 off # no ax25 module available (yet)
alias net-pf-4 off # if you don't use the ipx module
alias net-pf-5 off # if you don't use the appletalk module

Accounts added by the redhat 5.2 have a home directory created with
read access by owner only so the web server is unable to access it.
Do a 'chmod +rx ' to the home directories. If you have already
done that, the server is probably set up to disallow giving directory
listings and you don't have a file named index.html.

On RedHat (and perhaps other Linuxes, I'm not sure) you can run
/sbin/chkconfig --del pcmcia
which automatically removes it from your init scripts without leaving any
broken links behind. Do a "man chkconfig" for details.

Subject: i need to stop screaming ... ppp
Date: Wed, 07 Apr 1999 00:49:17 -0400
Ok here is what happened,
I setup my ppp. I got the dynamic ip for my isp. My modem dails and
connects ( the provider is netcom). I use 199.182.120.203 as the name
server . I have it in the resolv.conf. I dail up and the network seems
to connect but that is it. I run route and it hangs so I do route add
199.182.120.0 and route runs .. shows I am on the network for my
provider. I have a machine that is working so I can test the machine I
am working on against the machine that I am trying to set up. I have the
static ip addy in the resolver and the search domain. I run the route
add after the connectiona nd it shows where i should be on .. but I dont
get anything after the fact . This worked before when I started to work
on the server for several days. I changed the ip addy when I took the
machine out to the client. I saw that the network config was a little
off .. I changed modems. and tested the config again. nothing works.
Anyone have any ideals. I am stumped. All the things in the network here
are setup the same so I dont get it. I thing everything fits .
Here is what I am using :
redhat 5.2
Pentium 90
16 meg
56k generic modem set on com2
s3 video card
network card (d-link 16 )
2 gig hard drive
that's it
I dont get it but I need a little help
Another hint
I had it working and I changed the ip addy
I replaced the modem to see if that was it but the modem does the same
thing.
this is weird
so any suggestions would be apreciated

Subject: Q) simple Mincom, setserial file and modem question
Date: 7 Apr 1999 00:59:09 -0500
Hello Everyone
I think Linux is great :)
I have just starting to switched away from the Windoze world.
I have 3 questions.
1)
I am in the process of setting up my modem and ppp to dial into my
locat ISP which is running WinNT servers.
In the process I could not find setserial file. I found only rc.serial
So I edited rc.serial commenting out the autoconfig section and
uncommenting the manual section.
I uncommented
${SETSERIAL} /dev/cua2 uart 16540 port 0x2f8 irq 3
I know that my modem is at com2 (or ttyS1) and IRQ 3.
>From all the documentation I have read, is that I am suppose to add
this line
setserial /dev/ttyS1 irq3
to a setserial file.
In man page, it said that setserial is called from rc.serial
Is not cua2 an older (obsolete) reference to /dev/modem and should I
better use /dev/modem rather than cua2?
For all this is this correct and recommended method?
2)
When I run minicom
I get the msg
no config file
but I can dial with my modem using the AT commands.
At an earlier time, I was experimenting for a while with minicom.
What is the precise definition of the message:
device /dev/modem is locked
I assume that means the modem is in use by another process.
3)
When I dail in to my ISP I can not get
ATH
to hang up. I know I am connected for I hear the dialing and receive
the message
CONNECT 38400
How do I properly disconnect?
TIA
Julius

Here you reject CHAP and the probable reason is that you don't have a
"name UserName" or "user UserName" pppd option when you start pppd.
The secrets file should have a line of the form
UserName * TheSecret
in which UserName is your ISP account name and TheSecret is the CHAP
secret for that name.
The pppd must also have CHAP compiled into it of course.

Hi Linuxers!
Does anyone know how to setup a masqueraded firewall?
I've struggled with my firewall for a while, only thing I got to work is
the masquerading of my local net (192.168.100.0). I can ping both
network interfaces from inside and outside IP addresses as well and they
have full access to the ouside. This works if I issued following lines
in /etc/rc.d/boot.local:
ipfwadm -F -f
ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm -F -a masquerade -S 192.168.100.0/24 -D 0.0.0.0/0
But to begin with I wish to give computers in the local net only access
to www (port 80), and that seems impossible to me.
I issued following lines:
ipfwadm -F -f
ipfwadm -F -p deny
ipfwadm -F -a masquerade -S 192.168.100.0/24
I tried other rules to, but I think this should be correct? I'll be
greatful if some one can help me.

These 2 machines are on a different subnet. If you set the submask (??)
to 255.255.255.0, then both of these machines have to be on the same subnet.
Try changing the ip addrs of the machines, perhaps something like

You will also need to get isdn4k-utils (go to http://www.isdn4linux.de).
You don't need to compile as modules. When all installed, the messages
at boot time should should show ISDN card recognition.
If you wish to use ISDN in a 2.2.x kernel, go to ftp.suse.com and get
two file: isdn-<data>.tar & isdn4k-utils.tar. The first contains the
files required by the kernel to support the Speedway/AVM card. Following
the second (i.e. 2.2.x route) allows you to add the compression module
into the fray.
These are the isdnctrl commands to set it up:
/sbin/isdnctrl verbose 3
/sbin/isdnctrl system on
/sbin/isdnctrl addif ippp0
/sbin/isdnctrl addphone ippp0 out <ISP phone number>
/sbin/isdnctrl eaz ippp0 <your phone number>
/sbin/isdnctrl huptimeout ippp0 60
/sbin/isdnctrl l2_prot ippp0 hdlc
/sbin/isdnctrl l3_prot ippp0 trans
/sbin/isdnctrl encap ippp0 syncppp
/sbin/isdnctrl secure ippp0 on
/sbin/isdnctrl pppbind ippp0 0
Run ipppd with your desired options and then
isdnctrl dial ippp0
isdnctrl hangup ippp0
to do the business.

If you look in /etc/passwd you will see that the "user" nobody is *'d there
is no passwd so no one is likely to login with that and be successful.
Unless you assigned a passwd to it, and then I think stuff would have
broken.
'nobody' is equivalent to a windows 'system' account.

I have read all entries having to do with this to no avail....I've also
read the pppd man pages.
I use X-ISP to dial in and when I am not the root user I get the error
pppd returned 1;
then it stops. HELP PLEASE! I know I shouldn't be using root to dial
into my ISP but I can't seem to use any other accounts.
