Nowhere. CDE is wery commercial. Fortunately there are free Desktop
Environments for Linux. I've run the real thing (CDE) under HP-UX and Linux
but like KDE (www.kde.org) better. Take a look at gnome too (www.gnome.org).

Hey I think this should work for you!! i got this excerpt from
from another news group and it worked for me .... I deleted the
entire key .... see if this works for you!!
Locate and inspect the following key/value, and then export the
whole MSTCP key (to preserve for restoration purposes should
disaster strike ;-))
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP]
"DefaultRcvWindow"="2144"
Try bumping the 2144 (yours may be different) value up to what> the other
machine shows in its same key, e.g. 8192 on both.
Re-start and test transfer speeds.
If the above didn't improve things, delete the
"DefaultRcvWindow" entry completely ( rt. click on it | delete |
confirm ) and re-test transfer speeds.
Remember, you've got that backup of the entire MSTCP key, so
import it back in if the above "deletion" offers no
improvements. And re-post for other suggestions ;-)

Greetings,
Ive set up a Linux computer to route all our subnets. Everything
works fine except the displaying of the kernel ip-routing table. It
takes up to 5 minutes to display the five static routes defined in
route.conf. The routing itself appears to work fine. Any idea ?

Try etherboot/16.
This will allow you to create a boot prom for your network card
which then uses BOOTP/TFTP to get an IP address, and transfer a
tagged image from a server.
Go to http://www.slug.org.au/etherboot/
(and IMHO well written documentation).
Important note is that you need to use etherboot/16 for a 286.
I would advise that you use the boot from floppy option before
blowing any EPROMs.
Note: I use this to make a 386SX boot Linux over a network.
Using it to boot DOS is hinted at in the documentation - I haven't
tried it, although it is on the agenda for when I have nothing better
to do.

By "name-only caching DNS server" did you mean "caching-only DNS name
server"?
No you do not, you have an authoratative DNS server. Your problem has
nothing to do with the caching side of the DNS server's
functitionality.

You probably set one of those paramters you think you got right wrong.
Without seeing them we can't really help much.
For some useful information try:
sh -x /etc/rc.d/init.d/network start
This should show you the actual command that's giving the error.

I want to use this old Cogent-card with linux.
It uses standart Intel eexpress chip but with busmaster dma.
Every driver for cards with the same chip failed loading.
I still didn't find a manual, so I'm not sure if the jumpers are set
correctly. scanport does not even show a port adress.
Cogent (bought by adaptec) is no help.
How to use an NE 2000 EISA card?
the EISA I/O Ports are not availiable with the standart driver.
Do i need to use the PCI driver?
Please mail, 'cause I'm not frequent in this group.

hi all,
is there some way/mechanism (without a kernel hack), to reserve
a bunch of say 400 odd ports (TCP) on a machine (say any flavor
of UNIX, incl. Linux), to be used as server ports (the non-well-
known ports)... eg. if my server listens on say port 1000, can
i have 10 threads waiting to serve with port numbers reserved
as 5000-5010 (and the rest, with out an associated thread),
reserved, say 5011-5200) ?
i hope my Q is clear... pl. help.

On of the requirements on our network is for our hosts to set their
network default gateway to themselves. In other words the ethernet
interface on a machine might be 209.155.12.55 and I want the
default gateway to be the same address. What is the command
(route add) to set this up?

Either you'll need 2 real IP addresses, or use a reserved one (192.168.x.x)
and tell all other machines about the routing needed to get data through.

Count me in as well. This happens with virgin install. I have *no* dns or
dhcp running. All static addresses. I put my NetXRay on the line and I see
that the linux box is doing DNS lookup on the server's own domain.
My original hosts file had (for the server)
192.168.015 quest
After I changed it to
192.168.0.15 quest quest.full.domain
the dns queries went away and I logged in very fast.
The dns queries can be particularly difficult if you have a dial-on-demand
setup or lose your dns access. In that case you have to wait for the
connection to be completed, or for the dns queries to time out.

Yes, you can, with the proviso that you're going to have to use
PPP or SLIP to handle the comms between your laptop and the host
system. This means assigning IP addresses to each end and setting up
a connection mechanism (e.g. ppplogin) to handle the initial conncetion.
Once those pieces are in place, X will work over a serial line but
may feel a bit sluggish (this will vary with line speed). Good luck
with it.

I work with RH5.2 and kernel 2.2.1 and I got the same problem:
Although "rpcinfo -u localhost ypbind" gave the expected answer:
"program 100007 version 2 ready and wating",
when I typed "ypwhich" it replied:

noticed that /var/yp/binding is empty!
I would appreciate any comments.
