Subject: Re: Question about firewall configuration
Date: Sun, 04 Jul 1999 08:29:01 GMT
I have now tested this two commands and with this setting i can ping my
firewall pc but not the hosts in the internet. In this case i am getting
timeout for all ping packets. Now it looks like this:
on any LAN computer (with Win98):
- ping another LAN computer: OK
- ping any host in internet: timeout
- ping linux firewall: OK
on the linux computer:
- ping another LAN computer: OK
- ping any host in internet: OK
- ping linux firewall or the loopback interface: OK
Have you stil any hints for me?
I have now still one question: I have tried to enable only the message types
0 (Echo_reply) and 8 (Echo_request). It was not working. Why?
Is ping also using another message types?

Subject: Pppd problem
Date: Mon, 21 Jun 1999 22:41:24 -0500
Hello all,
I'm trying to set up pppd to do demand dialing, and keep running
into the message that version 2.2.0 of the kernel driver does not support
demand dialing. I have upgraded to the latest ppp deamon (2.3.8-1), and I
still get the same message. I am running Redhat 5.1, Kernel 2.0.36. What am
I missing? I am fairly new to linux, so I am usually missing something.
Thanks.

Win98 can ping Linux box and win98 box.
Linux box can ping win98 box and linux box.
Win98 and Linux boxes can ping themselves with no problem.
ps -x | grep mbd
Shows that nmbd -D is the only network services daemon running (smbd
isn't).
What am I doing wrong?
TIA.

Have you enabled "IP Forwarding" on the Linux box?
Lets have more detail please.

Ok, I am not too sure what the original question is but here is what I
have at home.
2 computers (NT and 98), ADSL, Hub. Both PCs have real IP to the
internet, so I am not using any gateway. Using IPX/SPX for internal
networking.
Basically if you want to connect to Internet with gateway/proxy/firewall,
you need real IP. Once you get real IP, you have 3 options for your home
LAn sharing stuffs. You can have NetBIOS over TCP/IP, NetBIOS over
normal NetBEUI (spelled wrong this one), or NetBIOS over IPX. NetBIOS is
what you need so you see stuffs in your Windows NT/98 network
neighbourhood. From my experience, having NetBIOS over TCP/IP doesn't
work well cause of DNS. NetBIOS over NetBEUI doesn't work when you have
TCP/IP for Internet (don't know why, just didn't work for me). So I have
NetBIOS over IPX.
If you need more help, try emailing me directly as I don't check this
group often.

To do that, you don't need PPPoE.
On an Ethernet network, you could have IP, SNA, IPX, and DECNET using the
wire simultaneously by using different packet types. Even in TCP/IP, you can
encapsulate your foreign protocol (SNAIP is SNA encapsulated in IP messages).
A VPN is can be made from IP encapsulated in IP packets, without the need for
PPP.
I'm not knocking the PPPoE effort; I just don't understand the problem it
solves,
and why it's better than the other solutions.

Hi,
well it all depend on apache compilation run time. The default location for
apache on RedHat is /etc/httpd/ but if you compile yourself new apache the
location will be on /usr/local/apache. Other distro keep apache other place
depending how the issue parameter during compile apache source code.
Remember don't change this location ....httpd binary try to seek default
location for configuration files.... I think you can set run time parameter
to point new location :-) but I hvn't try out.
