There's a \windows\hosts file in Win95. The default TCP/IP install
puts a hosts.sam file in that needs to be copied to just hosts and
edited as appropriate. If you are running samba the Win95 machines
will look hosts up there also before trying DNS.

Date: Sat, 02 Jan 1999 00:00:25 -0500

I'm a networking newbie, and I have a question, how can i find out the
IP address of my computer, after it dials up and gets the IP address
assigned to it by the ISP (PPP connection, actually I'm using Red Hat
4.0's netcfg and whatever scripts and programs that uses)?

The IP address is already reprted in /var/log/messages every time it
gets connected but i'm looking for more of something that can be used in
a script, or that can be issued to the command line for quick and simple
answer (other then ifconfig).

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I have this weird PPPD- problem.
I allready asked help in some good linux irc-channels, but nobody can fixed
it.
Maybe you guys from the newsgroups know this problem.

I run pppd in the easiest way, with the files /etc/resolv.conf and
/etc/ppp/options, thats all i use!
i connect trough minicom and then run pppd, i get those weird signs(what is
normal) but i get 7 lines and allways the same line!!
And then the modem dissconnect.

I'm using leafnode. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good. It's
available at http://wpxx02.toxi.uni-wuerzburg.de/~krasel/leafnode.html

INN + suck is also a possibility. It requires more work to set up and
a bigger machine to run on. It's more appropriate for a higher usage
server. Leafnode becomes a pig after about 10 users.

There is also a caching nntp server that only caches a message after
the message has been requested once.

You can find references to all of these on freshmeat.net

The problem is the linuxbox knows who the user of the winbox is and
requires him to also be a user on the linuxbox and requires his password.

1 Note the users name who is using the winbox (login as niels on winbox if
current user is unknown)

2 Add the same user name to the Linuxbox # adduser niels

3 set password for user # passwd niels

4 when browsing from the winbox give the password you setup on the linuxbox
for the current user of the winbox

The network neighbor hood will work then. and the user will have read and
write permisssion in his home directory on the linuxbox. This is all out
of box rh5.1 stuff when you checked all the windows connnectivity stuff
during install. I have never bothered to set up smb right. as using the
same user names as the current user of the winbox works so easy. From the
linux box $ smbclient \\\\winboxname\\c connects to winbox and does not
care who user is, only needs the password set for the share. (c:\ in the
example)
Hope I have helped and not confused

I apologize for simply adding another post to this needlessly
cross-posted drawn-out thread, but I'm hoping that this one will be
one of the last, once these few points are clarified.

In comp.os.linux.networking DG <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

They shouldn't need to -- you can get decent advice from Linux
newsgroups, if you bother to ask nicely.

> I read the f****** manual but no help. Your f****** 3-yr old kid is
> mentally retarded just like you you f****** pr***.

Assuming this statement is even true, you're saying that a child, who
has been deemed smarter than you (which is not hard to believe), is
mentally retarded. If you really meant to say this, doesn't it then
say a lot about *you*?

> I don't have to pay sh** if I don't want to. Now get the f*** outta
> here !!!

Well, actually, I believe those two statements don't work too well
together. If you feel you don't have to pay, and people here are
suggesting that you *do*, then the obvious conclusion is not for all
those people to leave, but for *you* to leave.

Quite seriously, you've worn out your welcome. Nobody is going to
help you now -- most have forgotten your original problem, and aren't
all that inclined to go back and look it up. If you're pissed off
about the warm welcome you *didn't* get when you signed on to the net
(for example, the people framing your account and making you switch
ISPs), stop, look at your behaviour, and try to figure out why.

I'm not saying you're stupid. You've inadvertently said many things
to that effect already, and whether they are true or not is not my
place to judge. I'll simply say that I think your level of maturity
leaves a lot to be desired, and that you should clean up your act or
leave until adolescence cleans it up for you.

Not getting the tech support you need is not the end of the world.
Try looking at http://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/ for your
answers, as I don't believe HOWTO documents care one way or the other
how much you yell and curse at them. If that fails, come back when
you're ready to act in a civil manner.

Thanks, I'll look it up.

BTW, the reason I want to run from cron is because I have a toll on my connection.
I just want to set the main computer's clock once a week and synchronize to
that on a more frequent basis.

I am using the card on a SuSE 5.3 (2.0.35) machine. I compiled the
NIC into the kernel. You may just need to get a new .c file.

What I couldn't do was get two of the NICs to work in the same
machine. I think this is 3Com's fault, because NT wouldn't have it
either. I ended up using a 509B ISA card for my second NIC.
