Is a driver available for a Xircom PE III parallel port ethernet adapter?
I have Redhat 5.2 successfully running on my laptop, complete with Netscape,
sound, and PCMCIA modem, internet access, it all works!
- I am dual booting with WinNT 4.0 service pack 4
But now I would like to connect to my home network using my existing Xircom
thru Linux (already works with WinNT) any pointers would be appreciated!

First of all, you might as well get ppp-2.3.5. Second, I'm assuming
that you followed the directions in the ppp source to put the right
files in the kernel tree. Third, you have to reaplce ppp.c in the
kernel tree with ppp.c from the ppp source, despite what the
instructions tell you. Fourth, you need to apply the one-line
LINUX_VERSION_CODE fix to ppp.c given at
http://www.tartu.customs.ee/linux/compile.shtml.

The simplest solutions would be too telinit into 5 (/sbin/telinit 5, as
root)
on the linux box. That starts xdm (X Display Manager) for you. You have
all the
software you need with any linux distribution. Can't tell how capable
Omin-X is
but you need a client that can handle the xdm protocol. I've seen
X-servers that
for windows don't do xdm (X-winpro is xdm-capable, Exceed too.
Reflection, think so).
If your windows X-server does xdm you can configure it to "query" the
linux
box by feeding it the IP address. There are other modes but you should
try the
"query" method first.
Good luck

I recently had a similar problem... it may not be the same thing as
yours, but the symptoms sound awfully familiar.
Check your routing table (type 'route -n'). You should see an entry
that looks similar to this:
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
0.0.0.0 x.x.x.x 0.0.0.0 UG 1 0 n eth0
(where n is some number and x.x.x.x is an address on your LAN)
This is the entry for your default route. If Linux can't find a route
to the network that you're trying to access (addresses on the Internet
will fall into this category), then this is the route it uses.
Chances are, your default route is pointing back at your LAN -- which
means that all internet traffic is hitting a big dead-end.
Now, you ask "Why doesn't pppd set the default route to my ISP
connection?" It probably tries to -- your connect script more than
likely calls pppd with the 'defaultroute' option. But there's a
problem... pppd can't replace an existing default route. So, you have
to remove your existing default route first. To do this, type 'route
del default'. Then connect to your ISP as usual. pppd should set the
default route on interface ppp0 -- and internet traffic should flow
normally.
Also, be sure your ISP's DNS server address is listed in
/etc/resolv.conf. From what I can tell, there should be an entry that
looks like:
nameserver 204.70.128.1
(This is the address for ns.cw.net -- your ISP appears to use this as
their default DNS server)
Hope this helps!

This may not be the complete solution, but it is something to consider. The first
issue is your vfat32 partition. That is a kernel issue and not RedHat specific. I
have read that kernel 2.0.36 is able to access a vfat32 partition. I can't verify
that, but I am using a development kernel 2.1.132 which has no problem with my
Win98 vfat32 partition. Your problem as I see it, is that the basic kernel image
you have downloaded isn't set up to handle a vfat32 partition. I know with your
wining personality you could find someone who can build you a custom kernel image
with the necessary modules built in so that it can access your vfat32 partition.
Then use windows to download everything you need, to your 7 GB drive. Oh and you
need loadlin. There's HOWTOs available via HTML on how to use loadlin. Reboot to a
dos prompt and boot linux from your vfat32 partition using loadlin and the
customized kernel image. This would get around your ethernet card problem, until
you have a full Linux system running.
Also I would think you need more then just 2 floppy disks. You would need the
entire base system on floppys. That way you would have all the basic drivers
available, such as the ethernet drivers, vfat driver and a basic ftp application.
I might be wrong, but on kernel versions before 2.0.36 the vfat driver allowed you
to access a win95 partition with its long file names. Starting with kernel 2.0.36
it is able to access a vfat32 partition. I'm sure that would require more then 2
floppy disks. For example, with Debian, it requires a total of 6 floppy disks. But
what do I know
For what it's worth - Good Luck
