Microsoft NT also thinks it's a robust OS.

I can send out via my ISP when using pine or elm on my Linux box.
However, not everybody can reply to me.
There's a problem with the MDA fetchmail forwards looking for
'mitchm@locahost' wherever that is.
Can someone give me an idea what this would refer to? Where should I change
something?
Thanks in advance.

By the time I can do things with procmail, or whatever, to send spam
to the circular file, it has already used up online time, bandwidth,
and telephone time. I know munging addresses is bad, but it's the
lesser of two evils.
My address is munged, now, and it's not by adding 'NOSPAM'. I don't
expect email responses to any of my posts, either. Each and every
time I fail to munge my address when I post, it seems that I get
several weeks of spam, several pieces per day. I have some filtering,
but am not truly up on it, so some gets through, as well as a fairly
high 'false reject rate', so I end up scanning my 'spam' folder
before deleting the whole lot.

A friend of mine uses it and he said that if 'anything' happens to that
the connection is dropped. Another thing he told me about it is it does
a check every so often where you have to click a dialog box to stay
online. He said it can't be an activity check because it happens when
he is downloading something. He tried not using the java app and the
connections stays up for about a min and then drops.
As a side note, they are using chap/pap logins...you are never going to
get a Login prompt because the connection speaks LCP (ppp negotiated)
and the user/password is sent via the LCP handshaking.

I'm using Redhat 5.0, with a modem connection to my ISP. I manually
start the ppp connection (/etc/ppp/ppp-on) and the masquerading works
like a charm (from win98/win95 boxes on the ethernet). This is a home
setup. 10BaseT network for 3 machines to the linux box.
I'd really like to get the modem connection to start up on demand,
rather than teach the family to telnet to the linux box to start it up.
Anyone doing this? My copy of the Dial-On-Demand howto refers to the
ability of kerneld to run scripts, referring to the kernel howto. But
that document (at least my copy) doesn't seem to discuss it.

Well normal IRDA (not networking that's my question) should go up to
115200 bps, newer ones even 4mbit/s or 16mbit/s (not yet supported by linux)

I'm attempting to use a Novell/Eagle NE200T PCMCIA ethernet card in my

It seems that the card is not properly identified and I get the
'Anonymous Memory' message in dmesg. If looked at the PCMCIA-HOWTO, but
haven't found a solution. I've tried the various memory exclusions
mentioned in section 3.5. If I use 'cardctl ident' it displays >>

Sendmail and the Squid Proxy server are both included in most distributions,
including RedHat. Get a book that covers these two and you should be set.
Squid is easy to setup out of the box but sendmail will require a bit of
expertise to get running as desired.

Subject: why I like Linux
Date: Sat, 2 Jan 1999 22:54:09 -0600
I was using NT Server 4.0, but it just didn't work as well as Linux. Here is
what I was doing on NT.
I first had it as my main server for The Internet. It worked alright, and
was very easy to setup, but it was lagging and I had to make it start up
manually all the time, a real pain in the ass.
Next I had it setup to do Virtual Hosting, again fairly easy to setup, but
very slow.
Next it was a print server, but it was a little tricker to setup, and worked
very slow.
Then I had it also as a file server, and that is what it did best.
I switched to Linux for cost reasons, and it seemed more robust, and it is.
I installed it, and set everything that NT could do and then some in just
one day, compared to the weeks it took for me to do it with NT.
Another thing was the support I got for the questions I had. I sent in a
question to this newsgroup, and I had an answer 2 hours later, free. Unlike
Microsoft, you have to spend money to get help with NT, and then it isn't
that good.
If I were given a choice when setting up a network with NT or Linux (or even
Novell for that matter) I would put Linux over anything. It is fairly easy
to setup, it is much more reliable than the others, and much faster.
Well, that's my two cents on why I like Linux.

I'm afraid you've been screwed. Winmodems won't work under Linux
because they've had their brains lobotomized. In Windows the modem
drivers have the code that used to be in the modem. The manufacturer's
save a few pennies per modem and MS's monopoly is reinforced. Even
Intel likes Winmodems because the processing that was done on the card
is now done by the main CPU. This forces you to stick to the regimented
upgrade cycle because of the need of more CPU power to run the latest
bloatware from MS, and stupid pieces of garbage otherwise referred to as
Winmodems.
These drivers are inherently difficult to re-engineer even if the
hardware specs were available, which they aren't. It is easier for most
folks to get a real modem, then spend a few man-years of work trying to
make a driver for these worthless POS. So don't hold your breath for a
driver; just get a real modem.
