Yes. That's a FAQ. You can learn more by searching the Linux
newsgroups with http://www.dejanews.com.

Another good question to search Dejanews for!

One usually uses the program 'df'. Either run it, or look
at its sources to see how it's done internally.

Hi, I was wondering why I have this problem with masquerading and the
new 2.2 kernels. I compiled a 2.2 kernel with ipautofw support and
ipportfw support and i was wondering, when ever i try using ipautofw, it
says protocol not available. I'm using ipchains for masquerading, so
what could be the problem. thanks in advance

He's correct in that assumption. Linux does not current support imbedded
network interfaces. Another network card would fix that problem....but....
with the Compaq Desk Pro there is a configuration disk that enables and
disables the embedded device, and from experience even when disabled I could
NEVER get another network card to work correctly. Good luck if you get it
going.

Hi. Are u sure it's a 3COM Card, cause if it is, try using the 3c509 drivers, if
that doesn't work try the ne2k-pci. If that seems to fail also, check with 3COM,
cause I know you can get the driver & util. disk from there, you just need the
model number

I have a problem, which I think is "unfixable" - any suggestions would
be appreciated. Here's my situation:
I'm running Red Had 5.1 as my "internet gateway" server (http, home
automation, diald, ip forward / masquerade). I just got a Creative
WebCam II that I installed on my pc that came with Creative Video
Webphone ( software for Net video phone calls ).
The problem is that I can be seen by the person I call, but they can't
see me. When I view my information when I'm logged in, the ip address
that is posted on the "information server" that ties my email address to
an IP address, it shows my "internal lan" ip address, not the ip address
of my linux server (gateway). I'm assuming that the software (on my
win95 box on my internal lan) is sending a message to the video name
server using the internal address configured on my win95 machine.
Any suggestions on how to get this to work? I love my shared internet
connection, and would hate to have to log off linux to use the web cam.
Thanks!!!!

The following perl code will get the information you want - I use it to post
my ip address to my home page to find my server . . . It places the
current IP address in $currip
open(IFCONFIG,"/sbin/ifconfig |") ||
die "$0: Can't run ifconfig for you";
while (<IFCONFIG>)
{
if ( grep(/ppp0/, $_) )
{
$_ = <IFCONFIG>;
($garb,$data) = split(':', $_, 2);
($currIP,$garb) = split(' ', $data, 2);
chomp $currIP;
close IFCONFIG;
break;
}
}

I believe (been awhile) that you need to set it in the samba.conf. But
there is another catch with Windows and Samba, especially Windows 98. You
have to alter your registery so it can send plain text passwords wich is
required by Samba. Do a search on your hard drive for Network.txt. There
is a section describing how to accomplish this modification.

If you are using Redhat 5.x and you have correctly compiled the loadable
modules, and you're sure PNP is disabled on both cards, You may still need to
create a file in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts called "ifcfgeth1". You should
be able to copy "ifcfgeth0" and edit it accordingly.

Well, I don't know if we're using the same program, but having just
read your posting and realized the identd-over-masquerading problem (I
don't look at my own connection ident all that often), I went off to
sunsite and picked up identd-masquerade.tgz. One minute of compiling
later (yes, my machine is slow), I installed it and it worked fine.
If we're using the same version of identd for masquerading (or even if
we're not), you might wanna make sure that you've got the masqueraded
version installed on all computers, both the masquerading server and
the clients that use it. That's one pitfall that one of the files
warns against.
Also, if you change info in inetd.conf, make sure you kill inetd with
a HUP signal (killall -HUP inetd) so it'll re-read the config file.

DHCP does not come into it in this stage, i think.

UUCP config files to migrate the settings from the old system to the
new one. But I just can't locate the config files for 5.2.
I found some Taylors UUCP style config files in /etc/uucp. Then I
added several remote uucp system using Linuxconf. "uuchk" returns the
correct result. But the settings are NOT saved in those files. I
wonder where...
I must be missing something... Please knock on my head.. thank you..

You can not directly go outside from Linux in your local network.
Assuming that you are using version 1.4 and everything is already
set up correctly, you need to first connect to Win98 by
telnet 192.168.1.2
then you will see a prompt to ask you typing in an address that you would like
to actually connect. Type in an address you want there.
Similar process is required for ftp, too. After you type
ftp 192.168.1.2
you see a prompt to type in user name. But you need to type in something
like:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
if you want to ftp to ftp.kernel.org as an anonymous user.
I hope this helps.
