Did you add

echo 7 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_dynaddr

to your boot-sequence in order to activate the patch???

p.s. the patch is necessar (if you didn't read the manuals) on boxes
that have dynamically assigned IP-Adresses (tipically a box with
dialout to an ISP) on the ppp*. The reason is that you have your pppd
(or diald) running on a fake IP as long as it didn't dial to the ISP.
The first packet that is sent out to the ISP has still that fake IP as
return address. That's where the patch gets it's effect: It provokes a
RESET on both sockets (box's socket and destination socket) and
reinitialisation.

I suggest you do away with the UTP crossover cable, and go for either,

1. UTP with hub

2. 10base2

the 10/100 hubs essentially do the same setup you're describing internally
- they have a bridge chip sitting inbetween the 10 and 100 segements. i'd
just go and get the 10/100 hub - simpler setup, just as fast.

All,

Has anyone tried to get these cards running under Linux? They use a
National Semiconductor MAC.

If anyone has a workaround or a link to the source to append to 2.0.36
kernel source, please send the URL or how you did it.

Thanks,

If your NICs have 10BASE2 (coax) connectors as well as 10BASET (twisted)
pair, why not just opt for a coax network cable between the two machines?
Take a piece of 10B2 coax cable (easily purchased at the local comp. shop,
put a T- connector on each end, terminate the other-side of each T with a
terminator cap (a must do!), and then connect to the two NICS. Presto,
instant segment (AND CHEAP! compared to a hub).

If you need any other links/sites for Linux, try http://www.emuse.net

That's a Linux portal site I built to help me in my day-to-day work with
Linux.

Good luck!

This is a difficult question as it is not very precise. Can you give the
result of the
command "route", "ifconfig", give the type of network card, version of
linux. How
do you know it is a card-setup problem ?

I suggest you to read the Network Administrator Guide (it's on the Redhat CD
or
search the web).

Subject: Re: Can I shutdown linux remotely?

It's AMAZING!!! how little SOME people comprehend what they read ... :(
I've seen about a half dozen replies to your post telling you that you
need to "telnet" or some other type of login to the machine you wish to
shutdown - EVEN after you plainly stated in your post that you did NOT
what to have to do that. BTW, that way probably hasn't worked for you
logged in as 'root' because your root user for SOME reason doesn't have
the permission to run the binary, or if you're not able to log in as
"root" remotely it's due to one of the init files (like ftpusers, that
keeps "root" from ftp'ing remotely) denying that user permission.
Occasionally, I find it necessary to 'telnet' to my Linux Box and HALT
it's operation, and it works fine for me. But, you say you prefer NOT to
do it this way (I read that in your message).

I also run a DOS TCP/IP suite on several of the computers here for Amateur
Radio purposes (JNOS to be specific), and there is a server/client
function called "remote" that allows the configuring of a 'sysop password'
and allow the remote site to do one of several things, including reboot,
exit, etc... Since JNOS is a variant of KA9q and that was originally
patterned after the unix format, I would suggest you get ahold of the
latest source code for JNOS and take a look at it. You may be able to
port the 'remote.c' code to create a daemon for use under Linux that will
allow the function you desire. Then you could use the client code as a help to
create an object you could use under 'WhenDoes' to do the shutdown.

Hope this gives you some ideas.

There may well be some other ways of doing what you want, and if there
are - I hope someone that knows will tell you about it.

And appart from that, who says your tty name is going to be the same
next time you telnet into the system? Also if you can add a new line
to securetty you already have root privileges, and you won't need to do
anything. The reason root shouldn't log in from remote is that with su
there will be a log entry somewhere so the administrator can see which
remote users have used root privileges and when.

AIX likes to know who its clients are. If the IP address of your client is
not associated with a known hostname then you can get that error message.

How the hell do I set this up? PC PCI MMX, fritz internal pnp PCI card

How do I load the isdn & Hisax modules. I know for a isa card I can
just put some info in the conf.modules file which has worked for me in
the past. I have not had success with other aspects of isapnptools, I
still have an internal USR jumerless pnp modem to get working.

If may have this wrong, but I think the instuctions said that with a PCI
card the kernal has to be patched. Is this right, if so how/where.

Am I using the best kernel. I am not an experienced unix administator
