Are sockets threadsafe? If I have two different threads attempting to
read and write to a socket at the same time, will I get non-
deterministic behavior?
If so, does anyone know if this is platform dependent or part of the
Socket spec (to be threadsafe)?
Thanx.

Likely, you've got a problem with your masquerade/firewall rules.
Check to see if you disallow traffic sourced at 127.0.0.1, or other
rules that would stop your traffic. It might be beneficial if you enabled
packet rejection logging, and analyze the logs for packets that should
have made it through.
Also, repost your question with your masquerade rules, and some details as
to the version of your kernel, and the setup of your network. Maybe someone
here can see the problem from the details.

I have each machine in the office using two different nameservers. One
is the office nameserver, and the second is the nameserver of our
internet provider. I would like to only use the office nameserver, and
have IT use the isp nameserver for name resolution for upstream sites.
Is there an easy guide or howto for doing this? I saw mention of it in
the net howto's, but nothing detailed.

I have a couple of small remote networks connected to our main office

IP's to the subnets?
If anyone can point me in the direction of HOWTO's or configuration
examples I would be greatly appreciative.

Just installed a linux server (RH 5.2) on a host of a 10-node LAN. The host
is a new Dell PowerEdge 1300, and it's used only as a file server for the
LAN. The LAN operates only during business hours, M-F 8 to 5. At other
hours, the LAN computers are shut down. Question: when should the server
host be shut down: every day after working hours (for 15 hours), Friday
night for the weekend (for 60+ hours), or never?

You are probably plain text passwording on the net. To remove
password encryption on Win98 find the file plntext.inf (or somesuch)
in the tools dir on the Win98 CD right click the file select install.
that does it.

Thanks to those posting solutions. I made the suggested changes to the
registry on the NT and Win98 machines. Everything works great now.
Before I changed the registries, I edited smb.conf to do encryption. When I
did this, however, the old Win95 machine could not share drives anymore. I
assume Samba can't detect whether to do clear text or encryption and respond
accordingly. If I'm wrong, someone might want to post a correction.

okay PnP is off...so u should know your I/O for each card... place that in
the options in the conf.modules file.. ie:
eth0 ne
options io=0xXXX
eth1 ne
options io=0xXXX
then do a "modprobe eth0" and a "modprobe eth1"..then ifconfig to make sure
they are recognized.... then "ifconfig eth0 up <ipaddress>" etc etc... i've
heard that having the SAME exact card can be a prob in linux 5.2.

This isn't a DNS error, it's the error where it tells you it can't find a

I recently switched ISPs to my current one which uses PAP.
After reading HOWTOs and following the instructions to a T (methinks) I
am unable to allow non-root to connect since name requires root
priveleges.
I have went so far as to put the user in the group root (just to try it,
as I don't know if that does anything that I need) via linuxconf, have
set everything I can think of as owned by root.pppusers and put the user
in pppusers, and yes, I have SUID'd pppd.
I am obviously missing something. Can anyone help me on this one?

Debian GNU/Linux ships with the MTAs exim (http://www.exim.org), sendmail
and smail. Debian GNU/Linux is composed only of software that meets the
Debian Free Software Guidelines
(http://www.debian.org/social_contract#guidelines), which imply that
commercial use is allowed.
Additionally Postfix (http://www.postfix.org) and qmail
(http://www.qmail.org) are available in Debian package format. They do not
meet the DFSG, but for different reasons than disallowing commercial use.

Commercial support for sendmail is available via Sendmail Inc.
(http://www.sendmail.com/), so obviously many people do not consider it too
complicated for commercial use.

Hello,
How about encrypting the file system? Linux Journal had an article on this
in July 1998 which used the DES/IDEA kernel patches to allow encrypting a
file system. Hence the only way to mount the file system would be with a
password.

Could you have a zombie netscape floating around? Does it persist

I don't believe you can just couple it to extend to 500 feet, the
signal strengh just won't get that far. Usually something like this
requires a repeater. I think the only thing that reaches this far
is fiber or thicknet. STP (shielded twist pair) gives you a
little more room, 150 feet.

Hi,
If you have the ncpfs-2.2.0.12-5 package installed, have a look at the
ncpmount command. You are able to mount netware volumes with this command.
If ncpfs is configured as a module in your kernel, you may need to "insmod
ncpfs.o" first.

Some little utilities like trafshow, ntop, and netwatch are nice
little programs to watch basic network traffic, like if one pc is
using ftp, telnet, or what port/type of traffic if going through.
ntop is a really nice package because you can set it up to have a
web interface and it breaks down the info into nice little pages,
but it adds a few to your load average. Sorry, but I don't have
web pages, but if you check http://www.freshmeat.net and do a find

Sergio,
I saw this message that you posted last summer and I am running into the
same problem.
Have you made any progress or found out any solution to make it work?
Thanks in advance.
