i had a similar problem while connecting my linux box to my windows network.
to resolve it, i had to give the linux box a fixed ip address, then add the
host name and ip address to /etc/hosts. also check /etc/hostname.
hope this info helps.

Does anyone have NFS working right with a Linux 2.2.x kernel on
the server, and freebsd clients? It appears to mount and
read operations work. Some writes work but others fail. Things
like a 'cp -R' of a directory tree leaves mostly 0-length files.
Did I miss something or is this just broken?

Regardless of which is really causing the problem, you can probably
fix it by reducing the number of requests each httpd process will
serve before exiting. Try setting MaxRequestsPerChild to 100
or less in httpd.conf.

Subject: Problems with NE2000 network card.
Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 05:08:11 GMT
I'm having trouble getting a cheap NE2000 ISA clone to work on my
Redhat Linux box. When I use the command (which is taken straight out
of the Net-3 howto):
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
I got this response:
SIOCSIFADDR: Operation not supported by this device
eth0: unknown device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: Operation not supported by device
eth0: unknown device
If I try and ping anywhere but localhost it complains about the host
being unreachable. I've also had error messages from modprobe (I think)
saying that it can't find module eth0. From what I understand of it,
Linux doesn't have a /dev file for the ethernet card, it's managed by
the kernel. So my current assumption is that somethings wrong with my
kernel setup.
I used Redhat's netcfg to set the ip address of the linux machine. I've
statically set the ip of the other machine on the network (a win98 box)
to something different. They're connected by a crossover cable. There's
nothing wrong with the cable and both network cards work under 95/98.
The linux machine is running Redhat 5.2 with a 2.2.1 kernel and
net-tools 1.50. I've got ip, ethernet and NE2000 ISA support compiled
into the kernel (not as a module although the dummy network driver is a
module). I've never tried to network this machine under Linux before
with any kernel. This is the first time I've had the opertunity to set
up networking on a Linux machine so I'm kinda in the dark as to whats
going on.
Something which may be related is that apache is now complaining that
it can't get the hostname for the machine when it starts up. It's only
starting doing this since I've started changing the hosts files.
Anybody got any ideas? I'm not sure if I've missed something when
setting up networking or it's that the network card isn't properly
supported by the kernel.
Thanks.

Any other suggestions? I have now tried both the tulip.c provided
by netgear as well as the latest (0.90Q) avaialable. I have tried setting
the full-duplex parameters in the source and recompiling with no luck. And
I have tried passing the parameters on LILO startup. All to no avail.
Let me just reiterate that I am not having any trouble running FD under
Win9X. Anybody have any other ideas how to activate FD? Thanks!

I tried ethernet bridging under 2.0.36 but I'm unable
to do so, so I tried 2.1.x and 2.2.x kernels.
When I run the brcfg utility I get a strange output (see below).
The designated bridge for port 1 and 2 seems to be
wrong 00:00:00:00:00:00. Sometimes there's the message
config pending . . .
Eth0 and eth1 are 3Com 3c509B cards
Does anyone have any experience with setting up a bridge?

I work on a Sun Solaris (have access to HP HP-UX) System. Now I got
a notebook with Windows NT. I add Linux to the notebook.
Sometimes I'm forced to use NT and I would like to be independent
of our local IT. For that Reason I need a Backup of my NT Partition
to prevent any damage of my Linux during Installation of NT by IT.
I thing it should be possible to backup the whole NT Partition with something
like:
dd if=/dev/hda1 | rsh hp-workstation "dd o=/dev/rmt/0mb"
maybe I can do some on the fly compression (/dev/hda1 is 2G Byte)
dd if=/dev/hda1 | gzip -c -9 | rsh hp-workstation "dd o=/dev/rmt/0mb"
Is there anybody who has any additional tip or better some experience?
What do the YOU think. Will the restore of this backup work?
Thanks in Advance,
Joerg

Have a look at the kernel ring buffer to see if , 1. the module is loaded
in this monolithic kernel, and 2. if the ethernet NE2000 module see's the
card.
'less /var/log/dmesg' , will give you the kernel ring buffer from bootup
this is the output of the kernel ring buffer of my machine for my

Several people have posted with this problem. When attempting to start
the netatalk AppleTalk package, it fails with "too many routes/iface".
The cause and a solution is posted on the netatalk FAQ-o-matic
http://threepio.hitchcock.org/cgi-bin/faq/netatalk/fom?_highlightWords=routes%20iface&file=83
Additionally, if you can control the size of your appletalk network in
your router you can reduce the size to level that ddp will like. I'm
using a network range of 0-10 for my tiny home network :)

This is why I generally recommend that new users install via CD-ROM and
not via FTP. It's a *LOT* easier.
You can get a CD-ROM version of various Linux flavors from the maker's
respective web sites. Here are some of the major distributions:
http://www.suse.com
http://www.redhat.com
http://www.caldera.com
http://www.slackware.com
http://www.debian.org
You can also get inexpensive CD-ROMs from places like this:
http://www.lsl.com
http://www.cheapbytes.com
but one thing that the inexpensive ($2) CD-ROMs are usually lacking is
good installation documentation. You can get official distributions
from the last two web sites somewhat more cheaply than from the actual
vendors, though, at least in most cases.

ok, welp since no one responded yet i thought i'd give an update as to where
im at in case someone can help, and to let would be sendmail users know what
ive found. i was using sendmail 8.7x from the rh5.2 distribution. i finally
found www.sendmail.org! great resource. but evrything was related to 8.9.3.
searching the net for sendmail found me only various versions inbetween my
8.7 and 8.9.3, or older. so i decided to start over w/8.9.3 since i hadnt
made much progress and the docs on sendmail.org look pretty comprehensive.
then i cannot compile it based on the directions: command not found.
installed make, then it works but i get pages of compile errors. im not
using the problematic versions of gcc mentioned in the docs. FINALLY found
RPMs for the compiled version on one of the redhat mirrors
(www.redhat.com/mirrors.html) (why are config files, docs, and actual
program in three seperate files? just to make it easy i guess.) well at
least I dont have to compile. i add my workstation ip address and the linux
box ip in the access file and do the required makemap hash command to get
rid of unable to relay errors. (or maybe with this new version of sendmail
it was host not specified or something) i am back where i started. my mail
sends and goes into the queue and just says deferred. the /var/log/maillog
says stat=queued for these msgs. if i send mail to mattl on the host, i can
retrieve it from my account setup on the workstation fine(mattl@linuxboxip).
i eventually DO want to queue expensive mail for scheduled polling with
fetchmail (which was easy as can be compared to this to get working). but
that is way beyond my current problem, and there appear to be good docs on
how to do this. btw the messages will just timeout in the queue. for some
reason linux thinks mattl@linuxipnumber is not local. i have dug deeper than
one would think necessary to find this in the docs.. who is the publisher of
this black book of death or whatever its called for configuring sendmail? i
couldnt find a single sendmail book at media play tonight. lots of linux
books with thin sendmail sections though (why do they bother?) this is the
ultimate in black humor from the sendmail docs, a tagline if ever there was
one: "...the world is complex, and sendmail configuration reflects this..".
that is just not funny anymore. argh.

there isn't one distributed as part of the main install, but
ftp://contrib.redhat.com/ should have one.

Today I set a motherboard on fire. Now the bizarre thing is that after
the smoke cleared it still worked.

do a dejanews search - you should be able to find how to increase the max
open files.

Subject: Spoofing IP address for a process
Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 06:40:16 GMT
I have network address translation set up. On the machine which does the NAT
I want to run a server. Unfortunately the server process uses the IP address
of the machine to broadcast its presence to clients via a meta-server. The
IP address it uses is the internal one which gets translated, and obviously
cannot be routed. I would like to fool the process into using the IP address
for the ethernet card which is connected to the internet.
Anyone know how I could do this? If it is relevant, this server runs under
wine.
