I am currently running RH 5.2 as a firewall/ip masquerade box for a small
network of win95/98 and linux boxes. This has worked well until the other
day when one of the employees ran mIRC on a win98 box. He was connected to a
dalnet server and opened a DCC to download an mp3, on his return the win98
machine was crippled, when he rebooted it there was no partition table on
its hard drive! Has anyone heard of this type of thing? I suspect that by
using DCC he opened that machine to an attack from the internet. How would
one go about locking down irc ports or improvising some sort of security
using ipfwadm or similar? Any replies gratefully acknowledged.

try http://www.linuxrouter.org
they've got a very helpful mailing list as well

However if you want to give internet access to your LAN, you might
want to check IP Masquerade : http://rlz.ne.mediaone.net for the
config file and the howto to understand it all

enjoy

Hi all,

sorry for the crosspost but i really don't know who to ask for today's
little worries.

I've set up a RH6.0, kernel 2.2.5-15 lately and plugged the box to my
little home network.
I can ping everyone and the box is pinged fine.
When it gets to telnet (incoming) the RH freezes. No other way out but
a reset.
Outgoing telnets either give a freeze or a 100% loss.
It's the 8th RH6 box I set up in a month and I must say I've never
seen anything like that.

TIA for all hints and pointers.

Hi

I'm trying to install hylafax as a faxserver on a RH6.0 for a 10 Win
9x network.
The binary is pretty straightforward to install and the docs explain
how to setup a new fax. So far so good. What it doesn't explain is how
to use the client to send and receive faxes, let alone from Win 9x
machines on the network.

Thanks for all help, especially as this was supposed to be fully
operational last week. oops

The website has a fixed assigned IP adress and a registered domain name.
My problem is that I have a dynamic assigned IP adress and linuxconf ( on
the webserver ) wants me to have a fixed assigned IP adress.

I am having pretty much exactly the same problem with my PPPD client using
demand.

If I type "pppd :10.0.0.2" to initiate the demand bit, it dials pretty much
straight away, (which confuses the shit outta me) so I have to take evasive
action and kill the modem so I dont run up excesive bills.. so yah.. I will
turn my modem on again.. and hey presto, it dials again.. dont know whats
going on.. Apart from that, everything works fine..
I am running RH6.0
I have a DHCP, IP Masq and the demand pppd bit going..

does anyone know how to fix this lil bug? Have I overlooked some minor
detail??
Please help.

I used the following link to help me set it up.

Ah. I should've been clearer that it was the x that should be restricted, not
the 0 in the 3rd octet.

OTOH I also know of no reason why a network can't have a zero in it - after
all, that's what the netmask is for, to say 'this is where the network stops
and hosts begin', more or less. Besides which, I run with a 10.0.0.0/16 subnet
here (for the hell of it) with no problems at all :)

Actually my network does have a couple of subnets with a policy of deny.

Subject: NFS corrupts files to/from SGI
Date: Sun, 05 Sep 1999 07:44:33 -0400

Hello,

We have experienced corrupted plain text files that were copied over
NFS from an SGI to a Linux box. The SGI runs IRIX 6.5, the Linux box RH
6.0. A simple copy followed by a comparison across the network (back to
the original) gives differences:

$ cp /mango/b431/dbEST/blast_db/human_est_1 .
$ cmp /mango/b431/dbEST/blast_db/human_est_1 human_est_1
/mango/b431/dbEST/blast_db/human_est_1 human_est_1 differ: char
113739618, line 2028112

and that difference is about in the middle of the file.

Is this a known problem, and more importantly does anyone have
suggestions for fixing?

If we perform the same test many times it occurs only occasionaly
making this a real nightmare. We have no faith in any files transferred
by NFS now.

There may be an RPM for the DNS server (It'll be called BIND, I
believe); you'll need to look on the CD.

As an alternative, you can download the source code from
isc.org and compile it yourself. Be sure to get the documentation
sets; they're invaluable!

On the face of it, it sounds like you need to set up a caching
forwarder. Fortunately, they're easy to set up. You'll also get
the benefit that you can get away from using hosts/lmhosts files
on each machine on your LAN.

   Good luck with it!

Can you access other computers by using their IP-numbers? If so, it may
be a name-service problem (I don't know much about NT though).
