Hello:
Well, for the first time in the two 1/2 years I've been running Linux, I
feel a twinge of Win envy. Specifically, I can't figure out how to get
live Shoutcast/Icecast into my box. The version of x11amp i have
doesn't offer a place to input the address, as the Win version does.
There are _tons_ of people broadcasting live on the 'net (most total
dreck, but some gems here and there).
Anybody point in a direction that'll help me?
Thanks.
I LOVE this stuff!

Mark,
Samba will do it. You can map a linix resource to nt/98 like you can
from nt to nt - users will not know they are accesing something non-ms
etc - seamless. So you can browse the linux box from nt with a single
large mapped drive ie L on nt to / on linux gives you the whole disk or
M on nt mapped to /usr/local no access anywhere else etc. For the
network neighborhood no exact match. There is a control pannel with a
system section which has network configuration areas like in NN. The
reverse (linux to nt) drive mapping is done from the keyboard by
smbmount'ing of nt drives to linux. (I do not know if there are GUI
tools for this but you could map the smbmount script command into some
sort of GUI.
To view linux to nt shares you would use the keyboard or a GUI file
system browser - they become resources for linux and appear as local
drives(mounted filesystems).
On the NN sid there is also the network configurator which is a nice
network GUI which does a limited number of things but very well.

When I use Samba 2.0.0 to connect to the Windows NT 4 computer over
the network I get the following error message:
root @LINUX /root]# smbclient -L nt4_server
params.c:Parameter() - Ignoring badly formed line in configuration
file: *passwd:*all*authentication*tokens*updated*successfully*
Added interface ip=192.0.0.190 bcast=192.0.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Password:
session setup failed: ERRDOS - ERRnoaccess (Access denied.)

What could be the reason for this?
I edited the registry to enable plain text password. BTW I can
connect to the Linux computer with NT without a problem.

Subject: Proxy & Packet Filter, which ?
Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 18:16:24 GMT
I'm sure this has been posted before, but I'll ask anyway.
I assume that firewalling with ipfwadm (or ipchains), is a form of
packet filtering ? Is this correct ?
If so, is it any less or more secure than a proxy firewall config? I was
reading in Data Communications the other day that proxy firewalls are
slower but more secure than packet filter firewalls.
I was going to use a Linux server dedicated to firewalling, with inet
services turned off, appropriate ipfwadm input, forwarding and
masquerading rules and possibly NAT (ipportfw ?) to "hide" the internal
services ?
Do I need to consider a proxy server setup instead ?
thx for your opinions, advice and suggestions !

Subject: Where to Get DHCP Client for Kernel 2.0.34 ?
Date: 13 Mar 1999 19:34:33 GMT
Hi,
Well, I've been using Cable Internet for a few days now, and boy, does it
fly! One problem: I need a DHCP client for my Linux box; all the more so
as my LAN depends on being able to allow my girlfriend access to her files,
the printer, *and* the Internet for research purposes.
One problem: all the DHCP clients that I can find on the Internet are for
kernels like 2.1.xx and higher. I'm running kernel 2.0.34, and I think
this is why I had the problem earlier on with compiling it.
Does anyone know where I can get a DHCP client for an older kernel? Even
if someone wants to put it onto their webpage, and I can download it ...
I could upgrade to a newer kernel, and might just do that when the new
distributions start to hit the streets, but for the moment, I have a LAN
that I burst my arse setting up, and I don't really fancy going through all
that again ... :-)
Can anyone help?

After having tried to install NT 4.0 on a slave drive by

be able to
put a master boot record on a slave drive and after also switching which
was slave

partition,NT 3.51 on another,SCO Unix on one,NetWare 3.12 on one,NetWare
4.11 on one and Red Hat 5.1 on another.
My question is: Will System Commnader actually be able to do this?
I understand all about the different files systems on different
partitions.
But does System Commander really able to put that many OSes on a Master
Boot record?
Any comments would be appreciated.

I have just set up a ppp/printer server in my home, and want to be able to
shut away the Linux box in a cupboard. The printing and ppp works correctly
(and ping to the Linux box etc), but I cannot telnet to the Linux box to
make modifications. What do I need to do? When I try to connect to the box
from Win98 I get a message saying "Connection to Host Lost".
I also cannot connect correctly from the Linux box itself via loopback, or a
direct connect to the server IP. If I telnet from the Linux box to the
loopback (or the Linux box IP), I get "Connection closed by foreign host"
after a few seconds of no response.
I would appreciate any Help. I have looked around at FAQ's etc, but it
appears ad if the Telnet is something that should just work??

Subject: Rogers@Home cable modem problem.
Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 20:24:57 GMT
Hi All,
I've seen a few posts about this type of problem and I've basically
tried all the solutions.
Here is my setup.
Location: Ottawa, Ontario.
CABLE Modem: Bay Networks, LANcity
NIC: D-Link DE-528CT PCI
IF: eth1
Linux: SlackWare 3.5
(I think, I'm doing this from 95 and I've lent my CD's out).
Kernel: 2.0.34
Rogers have supplied me with an ip address(fixed), a modem IP address,
a gateway, netmask, and the rest.
I would think that if the address is fixed then I shouldn't need the dhcp
client. But when I tried this it didn't work.
I have another NIC in my system (eth0) for my internal net.
I have dhcpcd 0.70 and it takes about a minute or so to return that it
can get the connection.
The commands I've run is
dhcpcd -d -h $host eth1
dhcpcd -d -h $host -c $commandFile eth1
WHERE:
host=hostname.rogers_domain_for_my_area.home.com
commandFile=/etc/rc.d/rc.dhcp #supplied with the daemon.
After I run the command, I do an 'ifconfig' and I can see the IF up,
but not for long.
And the worst part about this is it actually works under 95.
Any help would be appreciated.

I setup a similar network following the howto instrucions with no problems.
One thing I noticed is that you set your host address to 192.168.1.0 ; this
number is generally reserved as the network address you should change the
host address to 192.168.1.1 or some other number.

Looks like you have some wrong configuration in /etc/inetd.conf
INETD closes connections in that case.
I expect that the in.telnetd isn't in the given directory or has
another name than specified.

I am wondering if one can use regular Win NT4
(workstation version) as a platform for a home
intranet training setup? Won't the workstation
version allow a limited amt of users hanging off
it??
Reason I ask is cause..... I need to learn how to
use Windows as a platform for intranet development
since it is dominant at the moment. BUT.... I
need FREE tools for that. I already have Win NT4
Workstation for use at home..... can I hang a few
more boxes off it a develop an intranet under it?
If not.... the obvious answer is for me to forget
abt Windows and use Linux. <G>

I saw the same type of behavior last night on my RH5.2 system. I ended
up having to load the eepro100.o module (insmod eepro100.o), then run
Linuxconf, verify that the Ip, GW, mask, etc were correct and exit and
'activate changes'.
It's been running fine (I have the same type of NIC - Intel PCI) since
then. I have to find out how/where to add the insmod eepro100.o line
(and a couple other fs lines) so they happen automatically at boot up.
Good luck.

It works fine on my network. I have both(clients and servers)for
FreeBSD 3.x and Linux 2.2.3. What lines do you use in /etc/exports?
The exports line is a common cause of failure.
In Linux use lines similar to:
/ftp *.domain.com(rw,no_root_squash)
/cdrom *.domain.com(ro,no_root_squash)
In FreeBSD exports use lines similar to:
/ftp -mapall=nobody hostname.domain.com
If you are using nfsd as configured by default
this should work fine.
Mount clients like so:
# mount machine1:/ftp /machine1/ftp
Make sure /machine1/ftp exists on the client machine.
Also make sure machine1 is in your /etc/hosts file
on all machines on the network that will have/give
access.
