In the HOWTO's = ISP-HOWTO and PPP-HOWTO. If you installed PPP then
disregard all the downloading and build stuff in the top of the HOWTO.
NET-3-HOWTO is also good.
If you have RH poke around the Control Pannel, Network Configurator and
System.
Look at man for minicom to get the modem going before setting up PPP.

We Are using IOS 11.1 --The purpose is actually to have radius
activate a filter based on the type of account the user has (EX.
e - mail only, in other words, permit access to our pop3 and

Similarly, my old Alma Mater (RIT in Rochester, New York) offered a
four-quarter-credit-hour course which was targed to just this subject:
"Analysis of Algorithms". The text, at the time I took it
(early-to-mid 1970s) was Hopcroft Aho & Ullman "The Design and
Analysis of Computer Algorithms". Sure makes it clear why trying to
write hand-optimized, pipeline-tweaked assembly code for a bubble sort
is a Really Bad Idea (not that I ever tried, mind you, but I've heard
of people who did!)

This course is still on RIT's undergrad curriculum (and Ken Reek is
still teaching it - hi, Ken, if you're listening). In addition
there's another on "Complexity and Computability", and it looks as if
they've got at least two quarters' worth of study on parallel
computing.

Subject: Networking What am I missing here
Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 21:11:01 -0600

After a few days of looking at this and reading everything I can get my
hands on I have reached the conclusion I have developed a blind spot. I
am running suse 6.0 and the 2.2.2 kernel, a Netgear FA310TX card in both
the linux box and the win98 box connected to a Netgear FE104 hub.
Everything appears to be recognized and not conflicting but I am not
able to even ping from either machine to the other. Below are all the
pertinent files I can think of to include.

The plan is to run masquerade on the linux box and use it to connect
both machines to the internet but I have not worried about going beyond
getting the machines talking to one another first.

Attempting to ping the win98 box from the linux box produces nothing
though it does light up the hub. Pinging the linux box from the win98
box gets "request timed out" and also lights up the hub.

On the linux box:

netstat -nr returns:

I recently purchased a laptop with a D-Link DE-660
pcmcia network card. This card work fine under Windows 98,
and recently I had it working under Linux for a few hours.

Upon booting RedHat 5.2, I get an error message stating:

    pcnet_reset_8390():  did not complete

Anybody have a clue what this means?

I've reinstalled RedHat 5.2 a few times, and have tried
PCMCIA Card Services versions 3.05, 3.08, and 3.09.

I had to manually state my hardware address in
/etc/pcmcia/config.opts

Please help!!!!! I've been battling this for a few weeks.

Hello:

We are facing a problem that has been mentioned repeatedly in the
various
newsgroups (infact it is also mentioned in the NFS-HOWTO), but we
haven't
yet found a solution to it.

Our NFS server is located on an HP and reading files from the HP file
server
to the Linux machine is fast, but the other way around is *VERY* slow.
How can we correct this problem ? Is there a satisfactory solution
available?

We'd really appreciate any responses. Even if we are told that for now
we just have
to live with it (I really hope thats not the case, though).

Thanks in advance for your time.

Hi,
I'm runinng linux Red Hat 5.2 ( 2.0.36 Kernel), and I successfully
managed to compile the drivers for my 3Com network card (Cyclone 3c905B)
without any errors and to get the card to be detected in the station
address other than the ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff. (The driver that I got was an
updated 3c59x.c file from
http://cesdis.gsfc.nasa.gov/linux/drivers/vortex.html). I tried to test
the driver as advised by running the following command:

# insmod 3c59x.o

and I keep getting the following:

3c59x.o: unresolved symbol apic_reg
3c59x.o: unresolved symbol cpu_data

it also shows up when I boot up the machine. Of course the card still
doesn't work under linux but it works fine under NT on the same box.
Does anyone know what is causing this to happen and how can I solve the
problem???? Thanx in advance!!!

What's the deal with plip mode 1? It is described in the kernel

What about any plip-like protocols using ECP or EPP? Do these exist?

What you want to look at id the PPP-HOWTO. This describes the setup for
connecting to an ISP. Then check the NET3 howto for setting up telnet, ftp etc.

You need the server side pppd option proxyarp. The kernel must have
IP-forwarding compiled into it and turned on with

echo -n 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

The client side pppd needs the option defaultroute. The server routing
to the LAN and the default route must be set up and working.

If there is already a default route on the client side, then you can put

  /sbin/route add default ppp0

in /etc/ppp/ip-up instead of using the defaultroute option. Once the
ppp interface is torn down at the end of the connection the original
default will take over again automatically.

Subject: Dial-up IPX routing with Linux/Win95
Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 05:26:03 GMT

I have a linux box on an ethernet lan. I would like to have win95
clients be able to exchange IPX packets (No NW servers in the picture)
through the Linux box to other Win95 machines on the local network. IP
works fine, but IPX doesn't. Looking into the ppplog.txt on the Win95
machine, I see that it has connected properly (or so it seems to think),
as it brings up the IPXCP layer properly. The linux box, however, says
the following (From pppd's debugging output)

Dec 29 16:01:16 doombox pppd[604]: sent [IPXCP ConfReq id=0x1 <network
2> <node 000000000002>]
Dec 29 16:01:16 doombox pppd[604]: Received bad configure-ack: 01 06 00

Dec 29 16:01:19 doombox pppd[604]: IPXCP: timeout sending
Config-Requests

It seems that the Win95 box thinks it has the proper IPX Network
address, but that the Linux box disagrees. With the ppp options file on
the Linux box, I have tried to let the win95 box assign it's own network
address, and I've also tried having the Linux box assign the network
address, but both result in the same error - IPXCP: timeour sending
Config-Requests.

Any input, you IPX gurus?
If anyone needs more info on the problem, I have the full win95
ppplog.txt file and a file of pppd's debuging output.

Thanks,
Jared

You can tell pine to use anything you want for the from: line. I
remember it was mildly painful to figure out and I can't find my old
mail message describing how. The from address is normally not shown
and is protected. There were two entries in the .pinerc that I had to
change.

Subject: Help me PLEASE!!!!!

Hello all,
This is my first post to a linux group, so I am hoping for a good
turnout. My question is this: How can I tell linux that I have a socks
proxy that it has to connect through to get out to the net? My basis
for this question is that I don't want to have to specify any of the
proxy settings in my apps. I know that this can be done, because I have
my windows systems doing this across a WinSock proxy. Any help is
GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Yup - ICQ has a product called ICQ Corporate that we run in the office
behind our firewall. It runs on one of our NT servers. Nice program!
