anyone used this particular card successfully with Linux? It is not listed
on the official list of supported cards, but was hoping it was supported by
now.

Hi
I recently downloaded a great script (dyn-ip-page.sh) that posts your
dynamic ip address on a web page at your isp. The scripts itself runs
fine at the command prompt, but I can't seem to get it to work when it
is part of ip-up. My ip-up looks like the following
#! /bin/bash
sh /root/dyn-ip-page.sh &> /dev/null
touch /tmp/script
When ppp starts, ip-up is apparently run, because the last command
"touch" occurs, however the first script doesn't run (my page with the
ip address isn't uploaded). If I type in /etc/ppp/ip-up at the prompt,
the script will execute perfectly. Does this make any sense? Thanks
for any help.

Subject: DHCP and Linux
Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 18:31:17 GMT
Hello !!!
I need a tutorial (or a good HOWTO) on DHCP and Internet. I
want to do following. I run a network of 7 computers all running
(standard) Windows 95 or 98 and one NT 4.0. Now I want to setup dhcpcd so
that clients (Windows 95, 98, NT) would logon to Linux and Linux would
assigned them a dynamicly IP address. The second thing I want to make is
that they would have access to Internet over linux which gateway it would be
router. But for my knowledge
I think that the router is the hardest nut to crack. Because I think that
our router won't relay dynamicly IP address. We have 3COM OfficeConnet.
Can you confirm this?
Please help me!
Bye.

Subject: After kernel 2.2.3 recompile: DHCP client problem
Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 19:47:24 GMT
First, Redhat 5.2/dhcpcd worked great for me. Then I configured and
installed kernel 2.2.3 and all the relevant RedHat 5.2 updates (esp. those
for the new kernel). When I rebooted with it, the DHCP first could not find
net-pf-17, but aliasing this to af_packet in conf.modules stopped that
error. But...
Now on bootup, dhcp sets my eth0 to 1, 2, 3 rx values, and gets an IP
address but says that ifup timed out. Then it hangs for a long time before
continuing. Afterwards, lynx works. The command "ifdown eth0" effectively
takes the net down (good) but the command "ifconfig" still shows eth0.
What's wrong? Help?

Greetings
I recently got Red Hat Linux 4.2 (I know, a whole version behind). I
reconfigured the kernel source and I am attempting to compile it. However,
in the middle of the make zImage, it dies with the error AS86: Command not
found. Anywhere I could grab AS86? Any RedHat users out there know if it's
in the CD in one of the RPM's?
Thanks for any info!!

Subject: CASH REWARD! Cannot see router from PPP session..
Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 18:47:19 GMT
I moved a working linux PPP server to a new subnet on our LAN,
gave it a new static IP address, and modified the mgetty
login.config to pass myself a new IP number on the new subnet..
Now, when i establish a PPP link with this server, I cannot ping
the router on the new subnet.. I can ping other hosts on the subnet,
but not the router, which is pretty important... Everything I need to
access is on the other side of this router.. The router is visible
from a shell login on the server, so it's there.. Why does it become
inaccessable from a PPP session? Obviously, there is a problem but I
can't seem to get a clue.. I've checked subnet masks, netconfig, etc.
all seems well.
More details.. The server was on 152.30.10.2, with subnet mask
255.255.255.0, router on 152.30.10.254. everything works great.
Move the server to a new building, but it on 152.30.88.252, with
subnet mask 255.255.255.0, router on 152.30.88.254. PPP no workie.
Cannot ping 152.30.88.254 from PPP session.. WHY? Other hosts,
such as 152.30.88.10, .20, etc, ping fine...
I move the machine back to 152.30.10.2 in the other building and all
works fine.... argggghh.
I'll mention that in the new location there are cabletron
smartswitches rather than hubs... this is the only network
configuration difference...
I really need to figure this out and get my machine moved to the new
location. Please help. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly
appreciated. A cash reward is offered to the first individual who can
help me understand and fix this..
Warmest regards,
Russ Crisp

...okay, I'm now convinced that I'm losing my mind. I just checked my copy of
Programming Perl and I stand very much corrected.
I got into a rather heated debate with an old-school sysadmin friend of mine
not too long ago, taking up the point of view that perl should be in /usr/bin
rather than /usr/local/bin, and remember being shot down with rather credible
evidence. Now I'm thinking I had the wool pulled over my eyes (I would have
even sworn that he showed me the very same book and it said /usr/local/bin).
Anyway, my original point still stands -- using /usr/local/bin/perl will work
on more systems than /usr/bin/perl, and in that sense (and that sense only)
/usr/bin is wrong.

How many GNU-based UNIXes are there? Linux is the only one I know of that has
any considerable install base. All others (BSD, Solaris, SystemV) have perl
installed in /usr/local/bin.
Where "should" perl be installed? /usr/bin. Where will the default location
be in most future OS releases? /usr/bin. Where should you install perl
_today_ (or symlink it) to make sure your scripts work in as many
environments as possible? /usr/local/bin.

I got rid of my winmodem and have an internal plug and play us robotics 56k

I know they are little problematic but...
I've been all over the web for help and in the HOWTOs but I'm still missing
something.
I've got the isapnptools but don't understand its use. In /etc I'm supposed
to find rc.serial, nope.
The command ATDT to dial your home phone# to check that the modem is
connected doesn't work. go figure. I seem to go through the motions in
minicom but nothing, and no kermit, if that's supposed to help.
Basically I'm just not sure what file or script I'm supposed to edit to tell
linux what to connect to.

You should got to know your system mate 8) ... as root try crontab -l,
there is probably something running every now and again that saves
old logfiles via renaming them logfile.1, logfile.2 etc. etc. so
they do not grow forever. Same better ought to be valid for wtmp for
instance. Do not worry, most people on the Net are not after you and
the ones who are do not leave logfiles around.

Subject: HELP! What's going on with my send-Q
Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 14:05:36 -0700
I have a problem, where tcp connections will send exactly 32Kbytes and
then
just hang forever. Please tell me what's going on, I have no other way
to
find out what's going on. I heard other people mention something about
a\
queue filling up, could this be the same type of problem?
Here's what is happening. If I make a telnet connection from my computer
at home, to the computer at work (Both running Redhat 5.2 and both
conencted with a 56k modem using pppd 2.3.5 to the same ISP), it will
sometimes work fine and sometimes not. Through normal use, occasionally
the connection would just freeze, and I would have to stop telnet or
telnet through another virtual terminal.
We also run an apache web server on this machine for clients to connect
to and download various things. Inside the apache logs, connections will
almost always send exactly 32K (32768 bytes), occasionally exactly 64k,
and very rarely, the whole file.
If I run netstat on this server work side, I show a several send-Q of
over
30000, and the state is ESTABLISHED, some of the are CLOSE_WAIT. But
they've
been frozen and will not send anything for about 7 minutes now. If I
close
telnet on the home side, the connection on work through netstat changes
to LAST_ACK, but the send-Q stays at the same number, and this
connection never seems to go away.
In fact an earlier telnet session has gone to LAST_ACK and is still
there after about 10 mins, with a large send-Q. Does anyone have any
idea about what is going on? Both ppp connections are using an MTU of
1514 and no MRU (at least MRU doesn't show up in ifconfig, and I never
explicitly set it)
This wouldn't bother me so much, but we're trying to use this computer
with it's ppp connection as a place for our clients to download data.
And their downloads are stopping and generally going very slow (MUCH
slower than would be expected for a 56k modem). I have strong suspicions
that it is the same problem.
So, is this a ppp problem, a kernel problem? I really have no idea where
to start.
Also, will these LAST_ACK connections ever go away?
Thanks in advance,
John Broadhead
